I called Verizon this morning and they said any tablets on your unlimited data plan act just the same as the phone does. They prioritize AFTER 22gb and only the hotspot or if you're using your tablet as a hotspot will throttle down to 3G after 10gb of use. This makes me feel better as I will use more data on my iPads than my phone due to netflix/hulu/etc.
I sure hope that's true, I have been getting both stories since launch

Ok, back from the verizon store. here's how they explained it to me...

$20 per phone + fraction of $100 + fees/taxes
So each additional person makes the fraction of 100 smaller:

2 people is 50+20
3 people is 33+20
4 people is 25+20
5 people is 20+20
6 people 17+20
etc

For speeds, I'm getting variations. One test at night showed 24 Mbps. This am, I see this:

Dictation now seems usable under Verizon. Where it was bad enough under tmo that we often waited for wifi to use it.

Great speeds where I am.

My son hit 28 GB so far and has yet to be throttled.

Verizon Unlimited plan details
Unlimited talk, text, and data
Unlimited HD streaming video (see Verizon's Video Optimization Deployment page)
10GB high-speed mobile hotspot
Add a tablet with unlimited data for $10 per month
Add a connected device for $5 per month
Unlimited calling and texting to and from Canada and Mexico
Verizon's definition of Unlimited Data means that after you use 22 GB in a single month, your service can be slowed down if you're in a congested area. You'll hear the word throttled used here but you need to know that it's only a temporary deprioritization of your data connection when you're in a busy area. It may not happen at all depending on how many other customers are using the same towers.

I have a grandfathered UDP though I do not have tethering. This new plan seems better price wise and with the ability to tether up to 10GB. What is the downside of this plan vs. my grandfathered UDP?

Thanks

If you have an iPhone that isn't JBed (I never have, too many other things to do), MHS is an optional add-on with iPhones. The cost is the same as your data plan. I use a two iPhones on VZW (2 of 4 lines, under contract, in a legacy Nationwide Plan) - my data cost is still $29.99 per month, out-of-contract users on the NW Plan are paying $49.99 per month. You can enable MHS/tethering via My VZW or call in to CS and ask them to turn it on for you. For me, MHS would add $29.99 per month to my plan. Two bits for you to know…

That MHS add on feature would give you UL tethering in addition to UL phone data. I've been doing this for 7 years - no catch.

And, you can turn it on and turn it off - you'll be charged per diem for the calendar days that MHS is enabled. You will, in essence, be charged $1 per day (thereabouts) for the days you have MHS enabled - turn it on when you need it (via My VZ or via a CS call in). And, you'll have UL data for that day or days you have it enabled.

Both of those "features" are on VZW's web site. I enable mine per diem several times each month via the My Verizon app, never once an issue. I'm at a remote location for the next few days - I'm tethering right now to my rMBP while waiting for a client to show up. My iPhone's data speeds blow away the local crappy DSL that's available here at my job site.

If you're still under contract, as I am, it's pretty much UL data. If you're off contract, stick to under 100GB (VZW is moving heavy out-of-contract users off legacy plans). Even then, 100GB of tethering beats 10GB of tethering, pretty much…

With all 4 of my UL data lines still under contract and with the 1400-minute 10-member F&F add-on, that's UL data and virtually UL voice minutes for me. No frickin' way I'm switching to the new plan. Cheers.

People want USABLE unlimited. Would you consider, say, unlimited alcohol at a bar, but after your 2nd beer, you have to fill your glass using a thimble of beer fetched from across the other side of the restaurant? Sure it's unlimited, but it's unusable.
No, it's not unusable, it's throttled. And if you use more than 22GB per month, you have other problems.

It's definitely usable. At the same time, there really isn't any problem with someone using more than 22 GB a month.

That's good information - It sounds like the "throttling" doesn't happen as much as everyone suspected - primarily only if you are in a highly congested area and even then not all the time. This new unlimited plan seems to be the answer for us in the Panhandle - AT&T was about to get our business because of the new benefits of AT&T and Directv streaming together but Verizon just kept our business with this new unlimited plan.

It doesn't "throttle" at all. That suggests being knocked back to 3G. That won't happen, even during high congestion. Any slow down that may occur during congestion will be negligible. You'll stay on 4G LTE.

I guess I'm getting throttled. I'm only getting 2-3mb right but 24mb early. We've used up 84gigs already on the unlimited plan.

I have used 22 GB of data thus far this cycle (with 15 days to go). I am positive that I have used over 10GB of tethering data, and haven't noticed any throttling to 3G speed, yet. Just wanted to post an update for those thinking about the plan, as well as those with the plan who have been curious about the tethering cap.

Not GSM... so no thanks. Verizon and Sprint can take a flying leap, for sticking to the CDMA sludge.

Additionally, this is why iphones have CDMA headaches and multiple models, so don't think that the CDMA argument is insignificant. Qualcomm owns the patent on CDMA tech and that's partially why (most of) the entire rest of the world uses GSM, except Sprint and Verizon in the US.

On the upside, with virtually every carrier offering an unlimited data plan now, this means competition gets better. Yay! Let the one-upsmanship wars continue!

man you ain't lying. the only reason I wouldn't go over to verizon. at least on ATT when I'm not on 4G their 3G is still pretty fast.

If and when Verizon transitions away from cdma complete then and only then would I consider them.

I have used 50 GB (with 2 days to go) with most of that use being tethering, and haven't experienced any noticeable slowdown as expected. Just wanted to give another update to those who think Verizon throttles. They do not. They might deprioritize you temporarily (if the tower is congested at that moment).

Was anyone able add a tablet for 10$? Im on a single line plan, and when I switched like 2 months ago, they wanted $20 to add a tablet. I had a $10 1gb Tmobile plan that was post paid so I got the unlimited streaming, and Can/Mex data, which was a life saver, but now, I dont need it. Thought of jumping to the VZW but for $20 a month its not worth it, ill save the $20 to pay for my contract line.
I went to cancel with T-Mobile and found a loop hole to get unlimited data for my tablet for $20, plus all the tmobile goodies (intl roaming incl) - any word on if VZW will add that anytime?

I'm very confused... What does tethering mean?
Tethering is using your mobile device as a "hot spot" (wireless access point) or for network access via a direct wired (usually USB and/or Lightning) connection from the mobile device. That allows you to use a mobile network from a computer or wireless-only tablet.

I'm curious: how does Verizon determine the portion of your data being used via tethering? On Sprint, I currently have 3 devices on a "family" plan which can use collectively 12 GB / Month for the category "Data with Mobile Hotspot". I pay a bit more for this than I would if I had a 12 GB/ Month limit for the category "Data", with no Mobile Hotspot enabled. In other words, at least with the Sprint app, there is no way to tell which of the data came from tethering alone. It would appear to me that the only way the carrier could tell would be to somehow monitor whether or not "Personal Hotspot" was enabled on the phone. My guess is that they don't do that, but only know that you have the ability to use the hotspot service if you so wish; hence, the "Data with Mobile Hotspot" category if you add the hotspot option as a service.

Oh, and if our collective devices approach within 500 MB the limit, I get warning messages from Sprint that once the limit is reached "you may be subject to throttling at 3G/2G levels".

I'm curious: how does Verizon determine the portion of your data being used via tethering?

Any data used from when tethering is turned on in the settings to when it is turned off will fall into the tethering data bucket.

Can someone Cliff Notes for me, sorry I can't sort through 75 pages of read

I have grandfathered unlimited data currently and paying $236/mo and debating switching to new unlimited. I have unlimited data, tethering, calls and text currently.

I am worried about new plan for a few reasons... It specifically says unlimited 4G. What happens when 5G comes out?

Also, I use YouMail for voicemail and forward unanswered calls to my YouMail Box, will new plan hinder that in any way? I ask because "call forwarding" is listed as specific add on on my account.

I realize after 22gb of data I *could* get deprioritized but what happens if I use say 30gb of data and am willing to pay for a few more gigs of LTE am I able? Same question for hotspot, it goes 3G after 10gb, what if I need another 5gb of LTE, can I purchase it on the fly?

Will I still have share name id function where I can change caller ID name on new plan?

Sorry, just super apprehensive of switching. Terrified I'll switch, constantly get deprioritized after 22gb and be stuck

I haven't had any issues so far. My kids have been way over the 22 GB and. It been slowed down at all. Not sure about the other stuff though.

I have also gone over tethering and not had any issues. Only by a few GB though.
