Well, aside from them hopefully putting a solution to have some way to monitor that usage separately, I hope what that representative mentioned also doesn't mean that they might somehow bundle the tethering/hotspot data with mobile data and essentially also count it toward that 22 GB/line/month amount.
I hope not either. That is what she appeared to be saying in the beginning. I am shocked that Verizon doesn't already have a way to differentiate phone data from tethering on their site and app. Did they have something like this in place the last time they offered unlimited data?

Can't quite recall. I mean up until these new unlimited plans, with the existing Verizon plans or preceding More Everything plans and similar ones the tethering/hotspot usage simply came out of the same data bucket that regular mobile data usage came out of, so I guess from that point of view, it seems like they could very well be essentially treating them the same coming from the same "bucket" so to say, in which case the tethering/hotspot usage would count both toward that 10 GB number for LTE tethering as well as the 22 GB number for being potentially eligible for network management (deprioritization).

Safety mode wasn't fully implemented right in its inception, so this isn't surprising to me. I've seen a SIM popped into a hotspot (MiFi) & it pumped out over 100 GB and still no slowdown, so let's shhh for now. Find a way to track your usage other than Verizon

It almost feels like it's missing something in the beginning there where "4G LTE only." seems like a sentence fragment. It also doesn't mention anything about 22 GB/line/mo in relation to prioritizing data.

Yeah. I copied that by click on the question mark next to where it said unlimited data.

I contacted a rep on Twitter (just to test the knowledge waters again) about how to keep track of the tethering usage. I was told to look at my line usage total. Either Verizon didn't think this new plan out all the way, or they aren't (at least at this point) going to make it available, to where the user can keep a running total between the tethering and the phone data. If a user does use more than 10GB of tethering and is throttled to 3G and the data is all lumped together with the monthly phone total, that means that users could see their phone data speed throttled as well, unless Verizon has the tethering and phone data separated in real time behind the green curtain.

It strikes me as odd, that Verizon is advertising this new plan the way they are, without the user being able to see data usage from both avenues of usage, given that they clearly state throttling after 10GB of tethering.

Is it safe to assume that like their old unlimited plans, their threats of throttling were rarely enforced? I know two people on the old Unlimited plan that did 200GB and never experienced "throttling" even in Los Angeles, California (should be heavy used towers there). That's my guess as to why they aren't in a hurry to show usage. At least that's what I'd like to think.

I think they can differentiate the usage and this throttle with tethering but not with mobile usage. It's just that (at least so far) they are not counting the usage separately as far as just counting goes.

If you bought your iPhone through another carrier you would lose big time due to you not getting what your phone is worth

Well I guess I'm experiencing the throttling already. I signed up yesterday and I had a grandfathered udp plan. I decided to get this new plan and I was already at 17 gb. Now I cannot even stream YouTube. It just keeps buffering. :(

Are you at over 22 GB already? Have you tried something other than YouTube? Is this kind of thing happening all the time and anywhere you are, or just one particular location and perhaps at only certain times?

I would do a fast.com Speedtest.

Well...no mention of mobile hotspot being available...looks like I'll probably be switching to Verizon. But I'll wait until tomorrow to see what it would look like switching from the grandfathered AT&T plan to the new "available to everyone" unlimited plan.

Otherwise the only real question is whether I can talk my brother into switching his 3 Verizon lines to unlimited and letting me join, basically cutting my bill in half (or saving a few dollars per month and financing a new phone), or do the individual plan and still save a couple bucks a month (but skipping the new phone for now and waiting to see what the new iPhone looks like in the fall).

No not over 22 yet but close. I tried Netflix and at first it was all blurry but it got straightened out and played fine but I noticed the little buffering circle icon keep on circling next to the LTE on the top of the phone.

I'm pretty sure that just indicates there is cellular activity happening...which should be expected if you're streaming video.

Here's the speedtest. If I choose a location nearby this is what I get 4.95 download speeds but if I let Speedtest choose the server I get download speeds of 29.24.

Having a slow speed test is not indicative (in and of itself) of there being network problems or throttling occurring. There are a lot of variables involved (most out of your control) that affect the speediest outcome.

Use your service as you normally would. If you get throttled due to exceeding 10GB of tethering, you will know it. If you aren't tethering, you shouldn't have any real problems.

I haven't noticed any throttling yet. We have used over 26gb out of 22GB already on my plan. Just did a speed test, getting about 34down.

It wouldn't be throttling anyway, just potential deprioritization and only during time of congestion and only on a particular tower that is experiencing that congestion at that time.

From what it looks like, Verizon's version after 22GB is not slowing data speeds, but just prioritizing other users before you at a certain congested tower, not throttling at all.

I honestly like that better than AT&T which specifically says they "may slow data speeds".

Pretty much everyone is really more into the whole deprioritization thing than actual throttling these days. More than likely it similarly applies to AT&T as well.
