Where we live (Southeast Texas), I have had issues with 5G on Verizon from the get-go. Every 5G iPhone up to and including my iPhone 14 Pro, have issues with 5G data, irrespective of the number of bars. The solution has been to drop down to LTE, and everything works fine. I have also noticed that with my former iPhone Pro Max and my current 14 Pro, when 5G C-band (5GUW in interface) is available, it works fine too. My thought was this is caused by network congestion. When something on Verizon's end gets swamped, packets start to drop. Because I only had this issues in places with lots of people. Just my $0.01 (due to inflation, it opinions are only worth a penny now).
Verizon's implementation of 5G outside of C-band has been panned by many people. You may get great connectivity in the US Northeast, but high download speeds, kind of forget it.

Posted this in the original connections issues thread but figured I'd comment here too -- it looks like we got another modem firmware update with iOS 16.1 developer beta 3 -- 1.13.00 modem and Verizon 52.0, as always I'll test it out and let y'all know if I see any noticeable improvements :)

Have fun with that. My world is paperless and I don’t work in construction, so I have none of the items you mentioned on my person at any given time, and even if I did manage to find some stapled papers, I am not going to look like a crackhead unbending the staple to remove it and bend it into a makeshift SIM removal tool. No thanks, I’ll just tap on a link to install an eSIM. 🤣 Connect to WiFi if you are without cellular. Life goes on.
Highly doubtful but you do you baby boo.

Taking my iPhone 14 Pro Max back tomorrow. I am a Verizon customer and I work from home. I can’t afford to miss constant calls. This new phone sits at 1 bar or displays SOS most of the day. I live in a suburb of Denver. Not like I live in the country. Usually it was three bars. Jumped the gun and was early adaptor. I learned my lesson. Too much time being spent on camera and not enough on the basics. A phone needs to connect. 13. Here I come

Sounds like my experience in Cleveland, OH - I tried T-Mobile free trial you can install via the App Store onto your eSIM.

I was so impressed with T-Mobile's network I switched! Now I don't have network issues, and much faster speeds. Faster than what Cox cable provides to my home.

I have a 13 Pro Max on Verizon, one bar is nothing new with them.
If I'm out I get 3 bars usually and rarely 5G. 😒

I have Spectrum which runs off Verizon and I usually only have one bar too. Never had NO service in my area(Milwaukee), but it's pretty slow and drops to LTE all the time. They gave it to me free with my internet service, if I was paying for it I'd be mad lol. I'll likely go back to T-mobile and just keep the Spectrum as a spare line.

Is this a reason to delay buying an iPhone 14 Pro? Surely this isn't a serious hardware issue where they would actually be recalling or pulling phones, right? I have found Verizon to be a pretty reliable network, at least in having the most coverage in far-flung places. I have not been on 5G yet.

No idea if it's because I have a cheaper - limited plan (3GB data a month, and I never come close to that)..and they are giving me junk coverage - wouldn't be shocked. I've checked other carriers and they are more expensive than what I am paying for now. All of that is unlimited...again I don't need it!

I looked at "Visible," that runs off Verizon also.

I get emails from Verizon 1, 2..sometimes 3 times a week "You can only pay $25 a more per month and get these deals!! - Unlimited data, and Disney+ or Apple Arcade!!! Sign up now!" Nah, I'm good Verizon. Pretty pathetic, they REALLY want me off this cheap plan. LOL.

I think the first several times I saw that Visible logo, I thought it was for an invasalign or dental payment plan product. I swear I saw very similar branding for something like that.

It would be interesting to see if the non-U.S. models, that lack mmWave 5G, have the same problem on Verizon. This could be some sort of issue with the internal antennas on the U.S. models. Historically, Apple has been weak when it comes to antenna design, including the notorious "Antennagate" problem with the iPhone 4, aka "you're holding it wrong."

The biggest lesson, which everyone should have learned by now, is to not rush out and buy the latest model as soon as it launches. People learned this with cars a long time ago and they need to learn it with phones, and other high-tech devices as well. I recall my first good digital camera. I was lucky to have waited six months since Canon fixed hardware problems in early production that could not be fixed in firmware, yet the problem in the early production was not severe enough to warrant a recall; only if you experienced the issue during the warranty period could you get a repair or replacement, but it was a problem that might not occur until long after the warranty was over.

With all of these products there are hardware design changes after a few months because many issues don't show up until there are a lot of devices out in the field being used. Often software and firmware changes can't solve these problems, only mask them, but the problems are not severe enough to warrant a recall. The early buyers inevitably end up with an inferior product. It's best to wait six months or so before buying a new iPhone model, since by then most problems will have been discovered and there will have been hardware modifications to address them, including revisions of key components like the modem chip.

Verizon has been especially active in trying to eliminate cheaper plans. They just recently wrecked their Total Wireless brand for new customers. I still am grandfathered for two more years. It went from $95 for four lines sharing 100GB of data with 10GB per line of hotspot, to $120 per month for four lines with 5GB per line of data. Everyone anticipated that they would start wrecking their lower-cost Tracfone brands as soon as possible and they did not disappoint.

Verizon also increased prices on their Visible service, though they did add a higher-tier with more features (prioritized data, domestic roaming, Canada & Mexico roaming), which you can get for $40 per line if you use Paypal as the payment method.

In my part of the country, the western U.S., you're pretty much stuck with Verizon. T-Mobile coverage is abysmal. AT&T is better than T-Mobile, but still not as good as Verizon.

Yeah, I can see that. :)

I'll never go back to ATT, I had them when they were Cingular in 2007, original iPhone. Before that was Sprint on Razr..never had an issue with them.

I have to look at that Visible+ plan, reviews..any major connection issues, etc. $45 "including tax/BS fees," this is roughly $14 a mo. cheaper compared to my 3gb a mo. plan....which Verizon increased 2, 3 months ago. Pure greed!😡

*That Verizon 5G coverage map on their own site is a total crock. I am SUPPOSED to be in the full 5G coverage area just north of Philadelphia,..no. If I am outside my house, down the street I simply do not get 5G. it's just LTE or even 4G. Few shopping centers, the big mall nearby...then I'll see it. This 5G UW, I have never seen this icon appear on my 12 Pro Max and 13ProMax...but I THINK this is mostly in downtown Philly perhaps(?)... I have avoided heading down there for over a year now, sadly it's too dangerous. IDK, All of these carriers are a pain in the -you know what!

Some people don't understand the word opinion anymore. Everyone has one. Just because you prefer something a certain way, doesn't mean everyone does. That is ok.

At no time, did I say it was a general response or for the majority. I just stated my personal opinion.
I guess had you used the word "opinion" in your original post, then we wouldn't be here. Without that, it IS a general response.

100% agree and remind everyone of the fact that in 2008 full time work from home at Apple was a pipe dream and the iPhone 3G launch was an unmitigated disaster.

They haven’t outdone themselves yet as that was the worst product release ever…. Apple launched the phone, the OS Upgrade, App Store, MobileMe and all failed pretty badly in only :30 after opening in the Eastern time zone…. And didn’t recover anywhere else.

AT&T Activation went down, Apple ID, iTunes Activation, and MobileMe 5XX’d all day… even Apple POS couldn’t ring up devices… After 14 hours of trying to activate and ring up my first customer, I just gave them the iPhones for free and told them “good luck, we did our best.”

Until your phone number halfway ports from your old carrier to your iPhone 3G that cannot activate until connected to a service that is offline for the entire day (Needs iTunes Activation via USB) and you have no phone at all after a day at the Apple Store, we can be sure that things today are not so bad.

Work from home is fine.
But that one was understandable because it was the second iPhone and it was cheaper than the original on a contract and AT&T was the exclusive carrier then. The umpteenth iPhone available on multiple carriers shouldn't still have so many issues no matter when the workers worked from

More of a hassle than opening the settings app on the phone and changing the eSIM in my opinion.
Just wonder how it is for people who swap phones or have a backup. Will it be easy and free to switch back and forth? And it's definitely a hassle if your backup has a pSIM

There is no charge to swap the eSIM between phones if both have been previously used on the account with my carrier (Verizon). Don't know about others.

Made an account here to PSA to people switching from an older iPhone on Verizon to the 14 Pro models. In my case 12 Pro Max to 14 Pro Max. I’m pretty tech savvy and always activate and transfer my phone myself, but this stumped me. So I pre-ordered from Best Buy, it was ready for pickup 7 days ahead of projected time (was supposed to be 29th), and I pick it up. Go back home, unwrap it and admire it’s beautiful build and display. Everything took a while to sync (about 2 hrs), but as soon as I went to transfer the SIM to eSIM and phone number. MAJOR PROBLEM. Phone num transferred fine evidentially. The 12 lost cell and went to “SOS” in place of signal bars Network Settings says “Phone # transferred to iPhone 14 Pro Max”, only problem is, “SOS” also displayed on the 14, no service, and in network settings, says “Set Up Cellular” as if I never did it. I did it three more times to be sure (the thing where you take a pic/scan of the pattern on old phone) and no signal on either phone every time “Set Up Cellular”. Went back to BB who then sent me to Verizon the next day (bc i needed cell service obviously) who said it came up already activated on my account (as a 14) but with the 12’s IMEI still registered (never switched during network swap process I guess) and the manager there said people that don’t buy the phone from VZ have been coming in droves (from Apple or Best Buy or Amazon) because of this issue. And at Verizon they had to push the activation by IMEI update through manually on their end reading it off the phones settings page. Im not sure if its a Verizon issue or Apple (probably both) as the guy seemed to say it’s something about the eSIM causing problems with activation. They could just be spouting Verizon propaganda but I can see at least partially how it could have been Apple not giving carriers enough time to troubleshoot with eSIM. Just curious if anyone else has this specific issue? Regarding general connection its actually far faster on Wifi than the 12 but while side by side with my friends VZ 12 his has far more consistent 5G speeds, and while mine has gone up to 25mbps faster in same spot, running test multiple times my speed would drop 60mbps in the same spot and then his was faster. Test to test variance is much higher with speeds over the place on the 14 vs 12 and it seems like there’s stability problems or some software bug. Not as big of an issue for me as the cell service not working at all until I went to the Verizon store the next day.

So is this issue still ongoing with Verizon? I have a 14 pro max on back order. Should I cancel and keep my 12 ?

Howdy Act3,

I have had this issue with every 5G iPhone, it impacted me with the 12, 13, and now the 14. I think it has to do with network congestion, where the signal is great, but the servers are so overloaded, that they can't send packets fast enough, so your phone acts like there is no connection. Popping over to LTE, the problem goes away. Likewise, now that there is more c-band coverage at my location, if I can get 5GUW, then it works great on the 14 as well. The c-band did not seem to help my 13 very much though. Good luck!

It seems pretty bad / worse on LTE and 5G. Could just be the network.

Verizon is the such a poor value. I hope starlink or similar bankrupts the company and really any of today’s wireless carriers.

This may be dependent upon your location. I have never had issues with LTE, only with 5G. The ability to use 5GUW (mmwave and C-band) also works just fine. I have had the issue less frequently with my iPhone 14 Pro than with my previous phones, but it is still too early to tell. I have only had the iPhone 14 Pro for a few weeks at this point.

With regards to Verizon, I have been their customer since 2003, and they have bent over backwards for me more times than I can count. Sure service where I live now isn't as fast as it was in Colorado, but from what I hear from peers on the other networks at my current location, is pretty much the same for them too. I would not choose any other carrier.
DISCLAIMER: Of course this is subject to an individuals perceptions and experience with Verizon, and I am no way intending to imply or even hint that I am implying rob's opinion/description is any less or more valuable than mine, just wanted to offer a counterpoint :).
