I will NEVER go with Verizon without simultaneous voice and data - what a JOKE! I feel bad for everyone on that network.

Why? Those aren't the kind of things I feel bad for people for. It's just a network and they all have their issues/features anyways. Personally, this has never been a problem for me or seen as a needed feature whereas the cell coverage in my area is much better suited for Verizon anyways.

One chip

Do you think it's because there is one chip versus two?

I don't know much about this stuff, but Apple was bragging in the keynote that they have one chip for 4G LTE and voice, whereas others use two.

I'm a dumbphone user so it doesn't affect me, in so much as that if I upgraded, I would probably not notice an issue like this or care about it if I did. I thought of getting an iPhone since I've been eligible for an upgrade for over a year now on Verizon, but my main reason not to is not wanting to pay for data. Will probably just keep trucking with my iPod touch.

Theverge didn't test it. They "confirmed" it with a Verizon spokesperson who gave a damn riddle and probably doesn't know what they are talking about.

I have been wanting to switch to Verizon for a while, but this definitely gives me pause. The reason I wanted to go to Verizon now that there was an LTE iPhone was because it allowed simultaneous voice and data. For a lot of people that might not be important, but it is something I use often.

You can still switch to Verizon right now. Just buy a different phone (like SGSIII)

Article is totally misleading and wrong.

No phone except the thunderbolt can do simultaneous voice and data on LTE.

All android phones and iPhone 5 CAN do data on LTE and voice on 3G at same time. FOr all those phones, if you lose LTE you lose data at same time capability.

The reason ATT is different and thus Iphone on ATT is cause of HSPDA spec which allows for that. Only when Verizon comes out with VoLTE will all those phones do it.

If on CDMA it won't, but on LTE it will.

Seriously, a PR moron with no tech understanding of course isn't going to get this part correct

Right. It's like...did we miss something here. We already know this about CDMA.

A big reason why I don't go to Verizon is due to their older CDMA network. One could say GSM is old, but at least that bandwidth technology allows for 'the feature'. :)

And who are these people who 'dont use this feature'...sheesh! Underutilized iPhones!

No Verizon for me, in that case (pending confirmation and details).

AT&T runs these stupids ads, inventing reasons why you need to be online while talking:

- So you can make a restaurant reservation 10 seconds sooner than if you waited to hang up.

- So you can look up a trivia bet without the other person being tipped off by the fact that you had to hang up and call back.

Absurd. When in fact there are REAL good uses for this:

- Making a reservation, or simply choosing which restaurant/movie/whatever, while getting input from the other person: “let’s see if they’re open”/“I'll check their menu”/“I’ll see what theaters have it”/etc.

- Looking something up that you WILL tell the other person about while on the call. “Let me see if it’s going to rain”/“I’ll look at that attachment you emailed right now”/“you bore me, Ima look at cat pics” etc.

Considering their new family data share plans, this doesn't add up or seems like a strange move - it would then stand to reason that they won't allow tethering like they do on the iPad. Crap.

That sucks, I use this all the time on my conference calls, I was going to get the iPhone 5 as I have to switch to verizon, att is useless in my area. So the question now is do I get an iphone 4s, 5 or android. I hate to give up the iphone.

Nevermind, looks like the 4s is only 16gb now, so that's not an option. iphone 5 or some android phone.

I was on AT&T and switched back to Verizon as soon as they got the iPhone. I haven't had an issue with this since I've been back.
Seriously, there are people willing to put up with a crappier signal and coverage just for this? Hint: it makes no difference if you can do both at the same time if you have no signal. I haven't dropped one call since I've been on VZW and to me that's way more valuable.

what an ABSOLUTE bum out, so all the other 4g phones LTE on verizon that DO have another chip that apple excluded from the iphone5?! Wow, just wow. It's like hindering a cool feature, although rarely used, why, just why?!

Not a verizon issue anymore, this time its an apple issue. Only the iphone 5 doesnt support this. Every other LTE phone allows you to do this.
Agreed. This seems like a conscious design decision by Apple. Was curious how they were showing IMPROVED battery life with LTE.

I conciously remember using this feature maybe three times in the past several years.
Consciously, true. But it does block other less obvious things, like iMessages and emails, while you're on a voice call.

It can suck to be chatting away on a non-imporant voice call, hang up after 45 minutes, and then see 5 urgent iMessages come rolling in (that were sent 20 minutes ago, during the voice call, when you had no data).

Good luck to you AT&T people finding reliable LTE coverage (seriously, check your area coverage). I'm going to Verizon. This feature is not a deal breaker for me.

Well at least in the Bay Area on Verizon you can make and receive calls which is more than you can do on AT&T.

I've had AT&T for years, traveling often to major cities, and never really understood the complaining until I spent some time in San Francisco this year for business. Wow... AT&T is atrocious there - both data and voice. Maps were hopeless.

I assume NoCal is over-represented in tech forums and that explains a lot of the constant fury. Honestly in New York City AT&T is fine.

May not be a big issue, but it does suck to be chatting away on a voice call, hang up after 45 minutes, and then see 5 urgent iMessages come rolling in (from 20 minutes ago).

That's how I know my buddy on a Verizon 4S is on the phone....my iMessage fails and it waits and waits and then sends as a text message.

If I wanted to switch to Verizon, just for this I would not. Huge deal breaker for me.

I've had the iPhone 4 for two years now, and I think there's been ONE time where I'd have used the data and voice at the same time - not really a big deal people. I can see the navigation maybe? But if you're on the phone, would the nav just interupt you? Wouldn't it just do that anyway then?

My friend the feature is there. What is true however, is that if the iPhone doesnt have an SVDO capable chip like SIII, thunderbolt, etc then it cannot due simultaneous voice and data on 3G like those can.

The fact this only the iphone 5 has this limitation on verizon means its something to do with the single chip apple is using. No other LTE phone has this issue.

It seems like when on a call, only the CDMA and or GSM bands are working. Even on att, it drops you off of LTE and onto the 3g network.

That's because other phones use two radios to allow simultaneous voice and data (even SVDO phones). Two radios on at the same time = horrible battery life.

Verizon / Sprint (and AT&T for LTE) won't have simultaneous v&d until Voice over LTE is implemented.

That really sucks. It would definitely be a deal-breaker for me if I were considering them as a carrier. People can bash AT&T all they want but I have never had bad customer service, billing problems, or issues with my voice or data failing me. I guess I'm one of the lucky few.

I've never had a problem with AT&T. Verizon on the other hand... I'm going to stick with AT&T.

I edited it, because the service in my area is degrading. I used to have 4 bars at my house, now i have 1, used to have full signal at the office, now I have 3.
