Possibly a dumb question: If I'm tethering my WiFi iPad to my iPhone (using it as a cellular/mobile hot spot), would I be able to surf the web on the iPad while talking on the phone?

If you are using your verizon iphone to tether to your ipad then you cannot make or receive calls on the verizon phone at the same time.
Once you call someone or someone decides to call you then the data is automatically disconnected and personal hotspot shuts off and there is no data on your ipad while you're talking on the phone.
Should be pretty easy to test out on your own. Just have someone call you while you're tethering your data from your phone to your ipad or any other device.

VoLTE is only HD from Verizon.

HD Voice and Video Calling work only when both people are in the Verizon 4G LTE coverage area and are using VoLTE-enabled smartphones from Verizon. The calling experience customers know today remains the same if one Verizon customer uses a VoLTE-enabled phone and the other doesn’t, or if a customer with a Verizon smartphone calls a customer of another carrier or a landline phone.

Currently, VoLTE calls cannot be made between different wireless operator networks. So even if a Verizon VoLTE-capable device is calling an AT&T VoLTE device, for now the two devices will not be able to use the technology for the call. Instead, the call will revert to the older circuit-switched technology.

No where is it mentioned that VoLTE will work from a handset to a landline.

Wow, so even when VoLTE does get turned on down the road if you call any other carrier or a landline or a verizon customer that's not on VoLTE coverage or VoLTE device then you're still stuck using CDMA?
What a dinosaur network:D

Thanks! I'll give that a shot. Around here, Verizon has the strongest signal and is also the most affordable plan I could find. I don't like this limitation, but it shouldn't be a problem for me... that is, until the time it's a problem. I guess I'll be counting down until VoLTE.

Yep. Unfortunately they are the only ones with a legacy unlimited everything plan. I have unlimited voice, data and hotspot and use the crap out of it. So I'm stuck with Verizon and their damn CDMA legacy BS. I wish Apple would just add SVDO support and then I'd be all set.

Im surprised verizon is the most affordable plan available to you.
You probably didn't look enough. There's plenty of other carriers and many many mvmo's that have cheaper plans available. Verizon is usually the most expensive one.

True, but that unlimited data and hotspot will be very very limited after October 1st and with many restrictions.
So not sure if its worth it after that.

Not to derail thread...
It is usually the priciest... and maybe I *do* need to look harder. The plan I found is $60/month (2gb data) for a 2-year contract (paying $299 upfront for 64gb iPhone 6).

Yeah my hope is that throttling is 10Mb/s or that I'm not in a congested area (which I don't think I am). I get 80Mb/s and 10 seems like a good slow down to keep off abuse but still keep it viable for work. We'll see next month.

Lol:D
Realistically it will never be 10mbps during throttled time.
With AT&T I can take the 0.5mbps throttled speeds since I can do mostly everything still even video streaming.
On Tmobile its 100-160kbps
With verizon and knowing how bad they are with their terms and nickel and dime moves they will be probably about Tmobiles speeds even slower.

Not a bad deal but be careful with your data use.
2GB is not that much and after that its $15 extra per GB.

Not true. VoLTE will work for all voice calls.

You're mixing this up with HD Voice. Both ends need to be HD Voice capable to get the better sound quality, but the same isn't true for VoLTE.

I'm going to have to say incorrect sir. Verizon has stated many times that their Volte will initially only work when talking to another verizon phone that is capable of volte. I'm sure in time they will upgrade it so that any call can go thru colte but at this point it does not work that way.

No, it isn't required. SVDO is what does this on the android phones. It requires another antenna which Apple has refused to add.

VoLTE will only work with other VoLTE users so it will be severely limited. They need to add SVDO support to the iPhone.

Wrong. HD Voice will only work with other VoLTE users.

VoLTE allowing simultaneous voice and data will work as long as your phone supports it.

Thanks again. Wish I could find something unlocked (but there's a lot of conflicting info/conjecture) and avoid a contract (but Edge-type plans don't work for my use case.) The CDMA and this lack of simultaneous voice and LTE bug me, but I eat every day and have a roof over my head, so....

Anyhoo, I currently use less than 400mb/month, so it shouldn't be too hard (until I get used to the higher cap). It helps I have wifi access most of the time and don't stream much video. If I understand correctly, I can use the parental controls to cut off my data automatically should I need to parent myself.

Hopefully the VoLTE kicks in before this becomes an inconvenience, but again: food + roof.

True, if you're used to around 400mb then you should do fine.
But usually the first few months on a new device we all want to play and check out all features on it and use it more.
But I', pretty sure you can setup the parental control to disable it once you reach your data limit.
And also check your usage either on the phone by going to settings/cellular data or by using your carriers online app that reports data used so far and how many days are left on your monthly cycle.

I also have the $60 single line plan. I actually dumped my unlimited plan and am saving $30 a month. I rarely hit 2GB, since most of the time I can find wifi. So I would actually have to use 5GB a month to lose on the deal. 4GB a month would end up costing the same as unlimited plan.

I called up verizon customer service and the added advance voice 1.0 to my 5s.

We'll see what happens as I don't think the 5s is supported at this time. Maybe with IOS 8.
