This is a VERIZON board, why do we care about your local AT&T reception? I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina and while we have AT&T, Verizon and Sprint available to us, Verizon is the only one that is reliable. While it would be nice to be able to talk and surf at the same time, having a cell signal is way more important. As with everything else, YMMV!

I too am in the mountains of WNC, sitting on the side of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and I can confirm, you can surf and talk at the same time now with the iPhone 6. NOT on WIFI. Just did it and it works just fine!

That is what baffled me and kept me from trying the iPhone, but I learned it had something to do with Apple and Verizon. Either way, the iPhone 6 was a perfect time to switch ecosystems anyways. Glad that this option was available.
Someone made the point that you rarely surf and talk, which I agree, but it comes in handy when that option is needed.
Android phones put extra radios in them to supper that while Apple didn't want to add extra hardware for it. That said the Android phones supported just regular calls not VoLTE ones which only stated being supported around the same time that Apple started supporting them with iPhone 6.

I don't know the hardware differences but I'm a little upset the 5S doesn't support this. Seems Verizon has no intention of issuing a software update I don't know if that's cause they don't want to or can't.

Good points and catch. I forgot there was no VoLTE, but I was merrily speaking about surf and talk in general. I wanted to try Apple back when the 5s was came out.
Yep, as someone who switched from AT&T to Verizon years ago, I maintained that I rarely needed to talk and surf at the same time. However, since getting the iPhone 6, I'm reminded of how handy the ability is.
It also comes in quite handy if I'm meeting my wife somewhere and she checks "Find my Friends" to see where I am. Prior to having the iPhone 6, if I was on a call, my location wouldn't update since the previous iPhones on Verizon couldn't do simultaneous voice and data. This led to one or two instances where she thought I was broken down on a highway because the little blue dot hadn't moved at all for several minutes. That's not a problem anymore.

The wife part is my main reason. And I almost switched to AT&T just for the 5s so I could surf and talk.

Have you not heard latest Verizon research? Over 95% of customers do not talk or surf at the same time so Verizon is actually doing us a favor by not implementing such useless feature (sarcasm)
Except Verizon hasn't really been blocking it, as mentioned plenty of Android phones have been supporting it for some time and now that Apple added support for it too it's available on iPhones as well.

AFAIK, anywhere you get Verizon LTE you get VoLTE. So this point it pretty much invaild now for 6 and 6 Plus users. And honestly, how many people would go through the process of switching to another carrier and (most likely) getting another phone for simultaneous talk and text when just upgrading to the latest model on your current carrier will give you the same functionality? Plus, VoLTE is very clear and I love using it.
Also, why did someone dig up a thread that hadn't been touched in 7 months?

This. Why do people not check the dates on things?
Anyway, I've been on Verizon for almost 10 years since high school and can't say that I miss the ability to talk and surf. I actually hate when I have wifi access and I'm in a call. The notifications buzzing in my ear are super annoying. I've actually turned off wifi before when I'm making a call. If I need to look something up while in a call, it can wait or be done on another device.

And you still add your thoughts, lol. Talk and surf helps during 911 situations as well, but you right, most things can wait, again depending on the situation.
But honestly, I'm sure people look at the dates and maybe nothing was really answered in the "old" thread, etc. You have to understand that you don't know what someone is searching for, and someone currently in 2015 might not be familiar with Verizon, but only from hearsay about the network.
I know for me, I was in this situation when the iPhone first came to Verizon and I was one who almost switched carriers because I like the surf and talk feature that much, but of course I didn't switch until now.

I can do this on my iPhone 6+ on Verizon. I didn't sign up for the VolLTE or anything. Must be in my area then, because I was talking on the phone and actually had to use the web browser for something and I remembered I couldn't to this before! Haven't had to use it very often though.
It's part of Verizon's Advanced Calling basically--you can see it on the phone in the LTE settings where you can do data and voice, just data, or have LTE off.
I have it switched to data only, otherwise I have more dropped calls than good.

AT&T had data and talk at the same time on the previous IPhones. What did they do different than Verizon?
GSM which is what AT&T and many other carriers use allows for simultaneous voice and data, while CDMA which Verizon and Sprint and a few other carriers use doesn't, at least not until later versions which were not really deployed since by that time transition to LTE (which allows for that and more) was underway by pretty much all carriers.
