Another misconception among many is the nomenclature. They are trying to give it names that are not valid according to Verizon or Apple.
We've seen names such as:
vPhone
VzPhone
VeriPhone
viPhone
Verizon iPhone
etc.

According to most released information from each company the correct placement is "iPhone on Verizon". This is to prevent misunderstanding that the iPhone belongs to Verizon, when in fact it is merely just another independent manufacturer with a mobile smartphone that works on the Verizon network.

Any other name is merely someone's attempt to create a nickname.

I'll be typing ViPhone. Nickname? Sure. But it's a lot easier to type.

Wrong, at least for AT&T.

I love how the OP acts like this is an unbiased appraisal of Verizon and AT&T and then proceeds to write all this stuff about Verizon, which may or may not be true. It's also really strange that Verizon is not publishing data plan rates, if that is the case.

It is odd that I wrote about Verizon? Let me check my thread title... Oh ya, says VERIZON in it.

I have links to back up most of my claims and the couple things that do contain speculation (because there is no way to know yet) are a rebuttal to people like the fool who just wrote "not true" and thinks the argument is won.

A couple BS myths I see all the time:

1. Verizon's 3G is only as fast as AT&T's EDGE: False. Verizon's 3G is EVDO Rev A and I consistently get over 1000kbps on speedtests. On EDGE I don't think I ever saw over 150kbps. Verizon's 3G is much faster than AT&T's EDGE network, though potentially slower than AT&T's 3G network. I say potentially because I've had many occasions on AT&T where I have a full 3G signal only to get dialup speeds.

2. If you are using data calls will go to voicemail: False. If you have an active data connection the data connection will be paused and your call will ring through normally. Callers will not go straight to voicemail.

There is no way android users use more data than iPhone users. What is your source?

iPhones have Netflix and Hulu apps that people like me live off of as I travel for work and most places do not have wifi. I also use it at work and there is no wifi. I'm not alone. When android gets a netflix app maybe I'll change my mind.

How about doing some research. It has been stated several times on CNN's Tech website and other websites that Verizon Android users use more data than iPhone users do.

Not just an "antenna"

If we're busting myths, then I feel I need to address the "just an antenna change" issue. It isn't JUST an antenna change.

An antenna is a conductive device that facilitates the transmission and reception of radio signals. Antenna size is based on wavelength of the frequency that is being used. The shorter the wavelength, the shorter the antenna. GSM often uses the 1800/1900 mHz frequencies. This is a very short wavelength. However, Verizon and AT&T both use 800 mHz cellular frequencies in some areas. The wavelength on these frequencies is more than twice as long as the 1800/1900 frequencies. Consequently, propagation is typically a lot longer from the tower.

Regardless, the point is an antenna is just an antenna. If you take an am-only radio and attach an FM antenna, the radio isn't magically going to start receiving FM broadcasts. This is because the underlying radio components are not capable. Similarly, if you take apart the Verizon iPhone and put the antenna in an at&t iPhone, the phone won't work on Verizon.

It's also the radio chipsets that are completely different. CDMA vs GSM. Powering the antenna is a completely different radio in the Verizon iPhone. Some people may think this is a trivial point but I think it is important to note that the underlying radio in the phone is completely different. It isn't JUST the antenna.

Of course I'm a ham radio operator and I'm sensitive to these things :p

Sound like another die hard ATT person trying to make themselves feel better, and to hate on anyone who is getting an iPhone that hasn't bee on the original network.

Who cares if its ATT, Verizon, or any other carrier. Just enjoy the product you choose, and that's all that matters.

Not a die hard ATT person by any means, I actually have both a Verizon DroidX and a AT&T iPhone 3G, while i like the coverage I have with Verizon I dislike the fact I can't talk and look at a map, or search for something online. It's something I do on a daily basis. Yes I agree that many people will not use this feature. But you have to admit it's 2011 people and I can't talk and use data at the same time, come on that's ridiculous. I won't be someone who rushes out to get the verizon iPhone I just feel most of the population is misinformed that's all. Yes I will wait until verizon offers something better that's all.

This is not a matter of Verizon vs. AT&T and which one you go with because you like one of them..

Just look at the $20 extra for tethering on the iPhone 4 on Verizon. You guys do know it's quite stupid right? With CDMA, you know you can't have simultaneous voice and data at the same time - so when you are tethering and a voice call comes in, your net halts. This is really a big deal breaker if I wanted to switch to Verizon vs AT&T.

Anyone who can't see why the iPhone 4 on Verizon would suck even more so on AT&T's network is just desperate for the phone to be on Verizon. This time apple succumbed and said sure you can have your cake. It's essentially a crippled iPhone.

So you'd rather pay $20/mo extra to tether 1 device using the same pool of 2gb of data that your phone uses? At least on verizon you can (for now) have unlimited phone data and still use 2gb of Hotspot data up to 5 devices. And while AT&T will probably get the Hotspot with iOS 4.3, I doubt they will change their tethering policy of using the same 2gb of data for phone and tethering.

I would not pay AT&T jack sxht. I was making a point about verizons iPhone debut and that even with tethering option it's not good when u can't go online while on a call. I have unlimited data now together with mywi jail broken app it's way better than verizons offering.

Well you're cheating, and all this discussion is talking about doing it the official way. I'm sure you can cheat on Verizon and get unlimited wifi hotspot without paying extra as well.

I hope AT&T busts you and bans you from their network.

I find it odd how many people are surprised by the plans. The $30 dollar plan and $20 for 2GB is what they were already offering for their current smartphone line-up.

+1 You hit the nail right on the head:D

Yeah, but you can't be on the phone at the same time. Doesn't take advantage of the iPhones capabilities. You Verizon people wanted it and wanted it and you got your crippled iPhone, enjoy your cake:rolleyes:

Someone's a litttle upset.

Whats really going to be interesting are the people who rush out and buy the Verizon iPhone and get locked into a contract knowing that a newer iPhone will be coming out a few months later....I dont get it.....you Verizon people confuse me.:confused::confused:
BTW Im a Verizon and ATT customer...Im just ahead of the curve ;)

I will enjoy my cake!

I find it funny people like you saying we won't enjoy our crippled iphone on Verizon because we can't talk & go online at same time. Um, so what! I knew that already! I've had both AT&T and Verizon and I'll be glad to have an iphone that I can ACTUALLY MAKE CALLS WITH lol! When I had the iphone on At&t, I never needed to talk and get online at the same time and I had all 3 iphones so it does not bother me at all.

Also right now I don't care about a newer iphone if it even comes out this summer because if it does, it will not have the unlimited data plan because it will be on their new LTE network which means they will be making you choose a limited data plan which I don't want!

You forget I would say most AT&T customers experience great service. I know Verizon customers who experience lousy service.

And their alot of At&t people getting lousy service and droped calls and just live with it because they love their iphone.

oh and i have yet to meet anyone that has lousy service with verizon. granted i know this is for my area but hey isn't that all most people care about :)

So, you're confused by all the people who buy a current model iPhone after what, January of each year? Perhaps earlier? :)

What time frame do you consider okay for getting the current model iPhone? June to .... when?

And after that? Should people ignore the iPhone most of the year and only look only at WP7 or RIM or Android phones that are newer?

Actually, it's a valid question!

You know what a crippled iPhone is? One that can't make calls because there is no reception.

exactly...and even references "carrier fanboys" yet appears to be a Verizon "fanboy"

been on verizon using blackberries and android phones for years. never once has the can't surf web and use phone at same time has ever been an issue.

phone calls do not automatically go to voicemail when your using data.

the data plan for the VZW Iphone is $30 unlimited (confirmed last night w/ VZW rep)

this is the phone that all the android handsets wants to be.

i have no qualms about getting a VZW Iphone 4.

Never heard one person in Philly complain about AT&T.

I have heard Verizon and AT&T customers complain on other areas.

Most people care about coverage in their area, period.

If you had AT&T only because of the iPhone and AT&T doesn't provide good coverage in your area then you are a dumb consumer.
