Shame you won't be able to make/receive calls while using the Mobile Hotspot.

Are you sure you can't make/receive calls? From something I just read on a blog, it said that it will drop your data, not that you can't use it.

Big difference to me because if I'm using data and a call comes in, I don't want to miss the call and have it go to voicemail. If however the call still comes through, but it just disrupts my data momentarily while I take the call, that isn't as big of a deal.

And also someone mentioned about text messages...you still get text messages I believe on Verizon even when on the phone, I've heard it on my friend's phone when talking to him.

LOL, imagine CDMA iPhones come jailbroken and preinstalled with MyWi.

Or maybe Apple stole the MyWi code and incorporated it into the iOS.

Now, all we need to do is get some enterprising individuals to bring that over to our iPhones. :)

But I think the Mobile Hotspot is a way for CDMA iPhones to deal with not having simultaneous voice and data: Think about it. If you're with your wife or girlfriend, both of you have iPhones, one is on a call, the other is broadcasting a hotspot, the one who's on a call can still surf. They even could make it so only other nearby iOS devices give data, thereby pooling all the available bandwidth and creating a mesh network of data-enabled devices, regardless if they're on a call. Of course, unless they're ALL on a call at the same time, which is unlikely, there will be no data.

Well I don't know how handicapping the phone's true capacities can't be of a concern to "most people"

I honestly can't remember the last time I used data on a call. I am sure some people do, but I am sure many people don't also. It certainly isn't stopping all those people from buying up all those android phones on verizon.

It's exactly what they said, its a tradeoff.

On my Droid Incredible on VZW, the mobile hotspot app is free, but Verizon charges you for usage. I think the charge is $20/month up to 2GB of data. I gotta believe they'll also be charging iPhone users. Otherwise, it'll eat profits away from their mobile computing wi-fi business (you know, the one where you plug an antenna into the USB port of your laptop).

Why are people so fussed about this?

Failing that, take your calls with a wifi connection too, that way you can chat on the phone and browse whatever it is that's oh-so important.

One real world instance where I've seen this be an issue is Navigation. I have a friend on Verizon and on more than one occasion when I've called him, he'll say "Can I call you back later, I'm using the navigation on the phone and it doesn't work if I'm on the phone."

I've been able to use my Google Maps on my iPhone and still talk on the phone, and glance back at the phone screen every so often to see what my next turn is.

You either have the phone pressed up against your face or take your call on loudspeaker with the flashing banner at the top of the screen, neither are great ways to browse the internet on a small device whilst consentrating on a conversation.

Why don't you pay the people your on the phone to some more attention.
Then you can get off the phone quicker and carry on browsing.

too lazy to look up that iPhone ad that promoted simultaneous voice and data, but there is, in fact, situations where you just wanna look up 'something' during a call. Like an adress, a phone number, movie showtimes, etc. without having to say "i'll call you back, i need to use data now"

lol. speak for yourself buddy, there are millions out there who use this more than often :)

Thanks for the snark, but I use voice and data together all the time. I use a bluetooth headset regularly. I look up maps, weather, venue information when I'm making plans for an evening. I also regularly check online for information over the course of making phone calls.

This alone will probably keep me on AT&T. Maybe I'll switch over to using Google Voice regularly, but not yet.

Oh yea, and I'm reading that there will be a monthly charge for using the Mobile Hotspot. Screw that...I'll stick to MyWi on AT&T.

Of course you can receive calls, it will just cut the data connection off. How do you think it works currently?

Also other people have said you can't text while on a call, yes you can receive and send text messages while on a call on the Verizon network. Works just fine on my Droid X. I have it rooted so I am able to wifi tether my Air.

8.Will any Verizon Wireless apps be available on iPhone?

iPhone will have the 3G Mobile Hotspot app pre-installed, and it will also have other popular apps available in the market such as VZ Navigator, and V CAST Media Manager.

from FAQ on verizon website, sounds like typical verizon crapware

Voice and Data

Most people do not realize how often they use this great feature on AT&T. But its actually a very handy feature when you use it. I have had plenty of calls that someone will say" I just sent you an email, what do you think?" ; without the feature I will have to call them back after I download it.

This original iphone with Verizon is great for slimming out the AT&T haters and then we will start to hear that problems occur on Verizon too.

Won't that be a surprise! Not really, cutting edge technology has its cost no matter what network it is on.

Ill stick with AT&T!

It wasn't a snark, just over here (UK) it's not widely used - I'm unsure whether it's an o2 restriction but data can only be used on a call when you're using 3G.

Most of the time I'm on GPRS, I made a call yesterday and tried to use data because of this issue being posted on here and it didn't work when my iPhone switched over to GPRS. I got a notification that data wasn't available during a call.

All the nav' app's I use are preloaded so I've never come across that situation.

I guess you could make a VOIP call to overcome the voice or data only thing.
It's not really ideal though..

Well....it essentially kills anyone connected to your Verizon iPhones Wi-Fi hot spot while you are on your call. Say for instance, your driving around.....have kids using their iPads or touches playing a game over wi-fi while on a long trip. If someone calls you, on Verizon, they will lose their internet connection during that period of time that you are on the call.

On ATTs network, they would not lose their internet connection. I personally love Mi-Wi on cydia. It works great in this instance.

Another potential issue......Say for instance, you've started a download of an app from the app store. Someone calls you. On Verizon, that download will stop (or pause) until the call is completed. It may or may not restart when the call is ended. Not sure how that's going to work. I'm sure Apple has provisions for that.

Engadget's hands-on showed that it's just a settings tweak and that the OS is 4.2.5.

Seriously, how dense do you have to be. What do you "think" a mobile hotspot would be? It's an app similar to their MiFi device that allows up to 5 different people to use your internet connection.

Not nice! The majority of std iPhone users have no idea what mobile hotspots are.

Cheers,

it kills the connection, yes. But the kids aren't playing WoW or an online shooter.

i think the youtube videos will have built up enough buffer, and the kids won't mind reading the page they're on for that 5 minute call, without needing to load another webpage ;)
