Most people do not realize how often they use this great feature on AT&T. But its actually a very handy feature when you use it. I have had plenty of calls that someone will say" I just sent you an email, what do you think?" ; without the feature I will have to call them back after I download it.

This original iphone with Verizon is great for slimming out the AT&T haters and then we will start to hear that problems occur on Verizon too.

Won't that be a surprise! Not really, cutting edge technology has its cost no matter what network it is on.

Ill stick with AT&T!

I agree this is a great feature; if you have a signal at all and it doesn't work if you're on the EDGE network. If you live in most large cities this is not a problem but when you drive around the east coast like I do you appreciate have any signal along the highway or in remote areas. My Verizon USB data device worked almost everywhere, even in mountains and some forests. Even the T-mobile phone I bought seems to work in more out of the way places than AT&T. Even so, I will most likely stay with AT&T if they offer the hotspot for free.

Cheers,

and there are millions who don't ... they're called "existing verizon customers using smartphones". where's your point? stop trolling please :(

LOL. They dont use it cuz they dont have the ability to use voice and data at the same time. But it they had it then they would use it troll.

It wasn't a snark, just over here (UK) it's not widely used - I'm unsure whether it's an o2 restriction but data can only be used on a call when you're using 3G.

I guess the line that most bugged me was "whatever it is that's oh-so important" and the suggestion that there wasn't a valid reason to talk and use data at the same time; that I'm disrespecting the person I'm talking to by accessing data at the same time. I don't mean to be harsh in response, but the presumptive nature of that bugged me.

In the olden days I would use a phone and a newspaper/map/telephone book/equipment catalog/whatever, while communicating that information to the other person or to strengthen/correct what I was telling them at the moment. Now I do it on a single device.

Personally, I appreciate the ability to do them simultaneously using my iPhone. I'm glad to avoid the inconvenience of saying "let me call you back on that". Admittedly 3G only recently came to my neck of the woods (I guess I forget quickly), but I don't want to have to go backwards on this feature.

I guess you could make a VOIP call to overcome the voice or data only thing.
It's not really ideal though..

agreed.

yeah, of course they would use it.

but seeing as verizon is one of the biggest networks around, i suppose some people just don't care that much about it

if my iPhone had a laser pointer built in, i'd use it, sure ... but i don't really mind that it doesn't

you have to accept that some people are just happy, that, at long last, verizon is getting the iPhone. They couldn't care less about it having the same limitations that every other verizon phone has.

Sorry I'm not a genius like you, Einstein. I don't have the MiFi device either, just a regular iPhone user.

I don't have a MiFi either, but I have a clue. I never said I was Einstein, either, GENIUS. Learn to research things before just posting on a forum.

Why are people so fussed about this?

You either have the phone pressed up against your face or take your call on loudspeaker with the flashing banner at the top of the screen, neither are great ways to browse the internet on a small device whilst consentrating on a conversation.

Why don't you pay the people your on the phone to some more attention.
Then you can get off the phone quicker and carry on browsing.

Failing that, take your calls with a wifi connection too, that way you can chat on the phone and browse whatever it is that's oh-so important.

as a business IT pro, with much travel, data while on a voice call is VERY important to me. I know it's not needed for everyone, but it will effect my decision to be sure.

Seriously, how dense do you have to be. What do you "think" a mobile hotspot would be? It's an app similar to their MiFi device that allows up to 5 different people to use your internet connection.

Not Cool at all, there are people who honestly do not know, this was a Cruel comment and not needed here in this forum....

Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't aware this was kindergarten. Rather than researching what a mobile hotspot was, he took the time to make a post asking what it was. I've seen this on this forum more times than I can count and it's very aggravating. I cannot begin to tell you how many posts I've seen on the hacks forum asking about untethered jailbreaks. People need to learn to read and research before just throwing a post up.

You think I'm mean? Hah, I'm a nice guy. There are others that are far worse than me. Granted, I could have called him a lot worse things than dense, couldn't I?

On my Droid Incredible on VZW, the mobile hotspot app is free, but Verizon charges you for usage. I think the charge is $20/month up to 2GB of data. I gotta believe they'll also be charging iPhone users. Otherwise, it'll eat profits away from their mobile computing wi-fi business (you know, the one where you plug an antenna into the USB port of your laptop).

This would also piss Droid X users off who pay for the feature on their Droid. I know someone that Root'd his Droid X and now has Free MiFi hotspot ? but VZ still charges your more for it.

I think the biggest gap here seems to be AT&T limits ppl to $25.00 for 2 GB as where VZ has Unlimited for $30, be interesting to see if AT&T goes back.

lol. speak for yourself buddy, there are millions out there who use this more than often :)

Meh, four times in 2.5 years, I can do without.

A phone that actually functions where I live and work, that I'd like.

BTW, I thought you said that there would be no Vz iPhone until 2012...

You'll be able to use this feature for $20 a month. Nothing will restrict you on the iPhone from enabling it, but when you access a web page from a connected device, it will ask you to sign up. The "additional charges may apply" message is evident of that from Engadget's testing today.
