I picked up one this morning. See ya ATT! Verizon network here is actually faster than ATT 3G. Things load quicker.

I got there at 7:30. There were only a few people there and plenty of phones. It did snow last night but I doubt that was a factor since the roads were clear.

The majority of people here seem to be blaming the weather..what about the fact that this phone is ~9 months old, basically a year old? At least a few people on verizon are gonna wait till this June.

Also, there have been a lot of people who already have the phones, due to Verizon allowing them to order early, so it took some of the need for lines out of it.

I also wouldn't be standing in 18 degree weather (of course I live in Southern California, so I can't even begin to imagine that).

Haha Exactly, people in Chicago just got stuck in a blizzard and all that. This is a bad winter for alot of places not use to it so short lines is no surprise, just stay warm and order online :)

Verizon customers aren't used to the abusive customer service of ATT, and as such are not inclined to masochistically stand in line for hours. We show up a day or two later.

Everyone in our company (approx. 2,000) travels overseas a lot so we will be staying with AT&T iPhones and the GSM network. A Verizon iPhone on a CDMA network is not a good business decision for us.

Yessir, that factors in also as well. Very much so.

I think that's exactly it...

I am pretty sure if this was a new iPhone that people will camp out no matter what..:D

As far as I'm aware there's no new compelling features aside from it being CDMA. Not much "ooooh!" factor there for the average person. There's no motivation to be the first in your peer group to have this model; everyone has already seen 99% of it in the AT&T version.

Resale value of Verizon iPhone 4

might be a factor also...

outside US, only India (Reliance) and China (China Telecom?) uses CMDA technology, most of the India customer base is on prepaid plan...

i believe they were selling old iPhone 3GS when iPhone 4 introduced here in US for long period in India...

not much resale value for Verizon iPhone 4 (unless US verizon customers buy the old phone and activate with or with out 2 year contract) ...

i could be wrong here ...

I started reading about how ATT data is much faster. And I use my phone for data much more than talk. So I'll deal with the crappy voice, but no way will I give up ATT's data.

Verizon is pricing data plans high for the initial launch. ATT could get away with it, not sure if it is such a smart move for Verizon. Verizon recently eliminated a $15 150 MB data plan for smartphones, that would prob. have been very attractive for a lot of people. $30/month minimum for data seems like a lot of money.

iPhone 4 launch was very popular and a lot of people signed new 2 year contracts last summer. Most people are not going to pay an ETF just to switch to Verizon. Unless your service is really terrible at home or work, it simply is not worth it to pay a few hundred dollars to switch to essentially the same phone just on Verizon.

I think we will see sales spikes, such as last week's release to current Verizon customers, this summer when the next iPhone is launched, and next summer when a lot of iPhone 4 ATT customers are going to be out of contract and Apple releases iPhone 4xx.

But if ATT remains competitive with prices on the monthly plans then I think a lot of people will stay with ATT to save $20 or so a month. Verizon has great service, but they price their plans accordingly. Unless you have a good corporate discount, Verizon monthly bills are quite high.

when i told my family that verizon was getting the iphone they just laughed at me and said they have been saying that for years. Im like no its released today and they didnt even know. I have seen commercials saying its coming to verizon but like many others it feels like its been "coming to verizon" for over 2 years now. The fact that you can actually buy it really hasnt sunken in.

If you are a Verizon customer who wants to buy an Iphone and called me to check Macrumors to see how busy the stores are, I can check that while I am talking to you. Can you hear me now? :D

How is no one seeing that this is not only because most if not all current Verizon customers already has theirs and that new customers bought theirs yesterday online. Why would anyone stand in line when they can buy it early on the internet? Of course lines are short. I'm guessing they've sold over 75% of their stock to online customers already. Waiting on long lines for stuff is so 90s.

The reason for the smaller lines is simple. These are people who are Verizon loyalists over Apple loyalists, otherwise they would have bought an iPhone with AT&T.

Verizon loyalists just aren't as enthusiastic as Apple folk.

Thus, they're the ones who see the logic of ordering online in minutes rather than waiting in line for hours.

Good points -- not to mention the early termination fees. Most of the fanatics who like to wait in long lines overnight are the same ones who upgrade every year and already own the iPhone 4. You'd have to really hate AT&T to switch over now and cough up the penalties for early termination.

Personally, I will stick to ordering online when I get my next iPhone -- Apple does a good job of making sure they arrive the before or on the release date. And since I work at home, I can be here when FedEx arrives.

It's a bit funny and maybe a tad embarrassing.

Clearly immediate demand over estimated. I am sure there will be a long steady burn of converts as contracts expire but this isn't exactly the launch of a new product. The smart ones, the ones ready to jump ship purchased online.

iPhone 5 your needed on stage... Then you will see lines like never before for a something as silly as a phone.

Grow up

I love how people get such a great feeling from putting things down or perceiving only their decisions to be right.

I had all generations of the iPhone on AT&T and after I received iPhone 4, I finally gave up and went to Verizon and bought a Droid X. I happily pre ordered and already received my new iPhone. I am sure most people did the same and that's why you aren't seeing long lines.

I love all the "wait for June, wait for iPhone 5, wait for LTE" chants. How about I bought now and when something better comes around, I will buy that. What could it cost me after selling this one? A couple hundred bucks? Who cares? I would hate to think that a couple hundred dollars would change my life so badly that I would put off a purchase of something I use a hundred times a day.

Reading these forums always reminds me that most of these posters must be broke teens. All the adults I know don't worry about a few dollars and don't go around "bragging" about networks and simultaneous data!

Who the Hell talks on the phone so much anymore that simultaneous data is really a concern? I am a huge tech guy and it doesn't seem like a big deal to me so I can't imagine that 99% of the "real population" knows or cares.

Wrong. I am truly an Apple loyalist. I have a MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, 2 iMacs, 7 iPods and 2 iPads.

AT&T truly blows that much in NYC, that it's not worth having a phone that isn't usable as a phone 99% of the day.

Again, the reason for the short lines is not lack of customers, it's because all Verizon customers and new customers already bought their phones on the 3rd and the 9th online with free overnight shipping.

So the point of waiting online at a store a day later is.....?

it's the opposite

the adults who have jobs are the ones waiting because we value our money. teens just want crap.

everyone who asks me i tell them a new iphone is coming soon and no reason to spend top dollar on old junk

tech years are worse than dog years

Most people I know who have Verizon and want an iPhone are waiting for the iPhone 5. Why? They've already waited this long, what's a few more months.

I suspect the reason for shorter lines is that many people purchased online. I know that's what I would have done.

I guess if you can pre-order it online, why come early in the morning and wait? Also its not like Apple is offering something new :p Its the same iPhone 4..

So yeah not very surprising at the same time I could careless of iOS news, I'm waiting for Mac stuff..

But why did you switch?

3 of my friends pre-ordered last week.
8 of em I told to wait until the summer for the new one.

It's about 50 degrees in San Francisco right now, which as locals know is freezing. Who wants to stand outside in temperatures like that? Not me.

(I'm using an unlocked Motorola GSM dumbphone with prepaid service and sticking with that for now. Nice not having a monthly phone bill. I love my iPod touch though!)

Seriously. Am I the only one who doesn't think that if I buy iPhone 4 that I automatically can't buy iPhone 5 this summer?

And is it really that different from buying an iPhone 4 last summer? Even if iPhone 4 came out on Verizon last summer, none of us would be eligible for an upgrade for iPhone 5 anyways. So why not just keep waiting forever and never get one! But really, don't buy iPhone 4 or 5, wait for iPhone 8.

I am capable of using my credit or debit card when I please, thanks.
