most of the complaining was done by tech bloggers and journalists in media/tech cities san fran and new york. i guess the vast majority of them were just bandwagoners and at&t isn't so bad after all.

3.5 mbps > 1.4 mbps... advantage at&t

No, ATT sucks in Ohio.

If you order it from Apple, yes...
Not if you order it from Verizon. For security reasons, they will only ship it to your billing address.
However, there are ways to work around this but I won't go into that.

call your credit card company and add your work address as a confirmed billing address.

Was that hard?

I ordered from Verizon and they shipped it to an address different from my billing address

I woke up to -8 degrees with -30 wind chills in Chicago. No phone is worth catching serious illness or losing a finger to frostbite, so this is not at all a surprise. The phone will sell like crazy, but people can't be expected to literally risk their lives and health to line up. Non-story.

After the GSM iPhone debacle, the smart people are taking a wait & see approach. Especially with reasonably credible rumors about upcoming iPhones. Had the original iPhone 4 been a better phone, Apples credibility & trust would not be suspect.

Say what you want, right or wrong, about the death grip issue. Steve Jobs really blew it when he came out against his valuable customers by saying "you're holding it wrong".

it works along most parts of I-70 in both Ohio and Indiana. Outside of that, it's ohio and Indiana, who really cares? :D

Billing address = the address on your VZW bill.

Also trying to order the phone at 2:48 AM after waking up little dazed is kind of difficult to think straight enough to be creative don't you think?

Well you know since the pre-ordering process for current customers went pretty smoothly and something like 500,000 already got one...it seems like people might have learned that it is much better to get the phone in the comfort of your own home than spending 10 hours on a line in freezing temps!

+1. Even with the initial iPhone 4 release people were starting to realize that home delivery was an easier option. The Verizon iphone is available at so many more stores (walmart, best buy...)

when I tried to order there was a space to have it delivered to something other than the billing address. My problem was it asked for the "business name" and there was no field for that.

I think it is interesting that everybody focuses on that aspect of the response, while ignoring the free bumpers, and all the documentation that apple provided to show that other smart phones behave similarly.

Another Possibility

Verizon service costs more. The Data Plan has to be $30 a month....where as you can jump on AT&T for only $15 a month (if you are an average user). That'll save $360 over the contract. People are hurting these days. $360 is nothing to sneeze at.

I had the opposite experience. I live in an area where I don't get mail delivery to the house and Verizon's system wouldn't recognize my address, nor would it allow you to ship to a PO Box, even though both are listed in my account as my address.

I was about to throw something at my computer since it wasn't letting me order after getting up at 2:45, but then I just entered my in-laws address and it went right through, no questions asked...

Plenty of stupid people that bought Android phones out there! :)

Really... most of the general public does not sit on blogs and web sites like this knowing that a new version is coming. On top of that... the iPhone 4 is still the best selling smart phone out there and it's a great phone, so why not?

Apple brought this on themselves. They chose not to license the OS and chose to go with exclusive carrier agreements. If there were other iOS smartphone form factors, the iphone may not be #1, yet the platform would be stronger. That was short sighted. If they had gone with all worldwide carriers or as many as possible right from the beginning, there would be no Android to speak of. That decision was also short sighted. They were greedy and it backfired.

Now the platform is stagnating while Android continues to show record growth. It sounds like WebOS may be on track and Nokia/MS may have some synergy. Not hold my breath on the last two, but Apple had the smartphone market in its greedy little palm a year or two ago and are apparently paying the price for the desire to have absolute control.

Still, Apple will continue with record profits with minority market share as they have been doing for many years. I've owned macs and ipods for many years, but disagree with the ios approach so I prefer high end Android devices.

My BB would have service reduced when held a specific way.

I already purcahsed a case for my iPhone because I fear that I will break it or damage it. A case removes all issues with the "death grip"

you know you could have stuff delivered to your work right?

Wow, that's kind of uncalled for and rude. I don't know this person's predicament but some of us work in secure facilities (such as a base with a guard and a gate) and are not allowed to have personal mail shipped to us. But, I digress.

Bundle up, get out and buy the ViPhone, I thought more than half here on this forum HATED AT&T.

Yeah but if people did that, MacRumors would have nothing to report. God forbid there is an Apple release that people aren't camping outside, days in advance. There *MUST* be a reason for short lines and lack of people in stores. Oh yes, the Mac reporters will blame it on the weather. Yeah that sounds good.. the weather! Because of the weather, less people showed up around the country to pick up an iphone on Verizon launch day. Go with that.

Great reporting..

Odd, cause the iPhone 4 has been a success in sales so far *shrug*.

I have one, it's been a great phone. Certainly better than my iPhone 3G (it would be really hard to go back if my phone got lost or stolen). It has addressed every single problem the 3G had (camera/GPS/speed). The only thing I have issues with it now is a quirky home button and well, eventually it will be too slow for the newest OS cause that's technology. But I'm happy with everything else on it (I'm not sure what Apple could do to it to make me really drool over the new phone and wish I had it instead).

And Steve Jobs may have contributed to all the overhype about the antenna issue with his response (I agree that from a PR view his response was horrid, though I actually agree with his response... it's just not good PR), but it still didn't kill sales. Don't fool yourself, it's a good phone. Any flaw it has is so minimal it's not that noticeable unless you are looking for it.

I doubt this has anything at all to do with people not trusting Apple anymore. And more to do with the fact most people on AT&T are either in contracts right now and don't want to pay the breaking contract fee, are happy with AT&T (or at least not unhappy enough to break contract now), and/or in June a new iPhone comes out and why not go ahead and wait for that (specially if you are like me and plan on having the phone for the full 2 year contract to take advantage of the full subsidized price of a new one. I know I'd probably wait if I was planning on changing until at least my contract was up and if it was up now, I'd probably wait to see what the iPhone 5 offered cause well, it's just a half year and I could have a newer phone that I would be planning on using for 2 years). I guess if I didn't already have an iPhone I might be more impatient and more easily swayed to switch now. But most of the people Verizon is going to have switch right now are people who didn't want to wait for Verizon to get the iPhone so already have them with AT&T.

Not sure about other couriers but FedEX and UPS will not deliver to a PO Box.

Ouch.

Well, chances are anyone on VZW that was planning to get one did so last week. I also don't see a mass exodus from AT&T if it's gonna cost people an huge ETF + price of a new iPhone.

I'm switching from AT&T, but only because my contract ended eons ago and this is going to be my first iPhone, anyway. Also, because I didn't want to miss out on getting an unlimited data plan. No surf + talk kinda sucks, but I'd rather have the unlimited plan than the 2GB one.

Exaclty...it's the weather (sarcasm). Nevermind the fact that millions wait in line outside on Black Friday at thousands of stores each year...the cold weather is keeping people from buying a Verizon iPhone. :)

Sounds like AT&T is flexible...I bet if you called AT&T and threatened to go to another carrier, they'd give you that unlimited plan.
