And when iPhone 5 is announced for both carriers in June, won't you feel silly for having waited all this time only to have jumped in prematurely?

Heh, regardless with any technology product the day you purchase one it becomes old news in a few months anyway.
If your going to wait for the latest and the greatest, you will never have it.

By some peoples logic, nobody should be buying any iPhone 4's right now because they're going to supposedly announce an upgraded one. I thought iPhones had a great resale value...

It's ridiculous to have waited many years, but then not wait just a few more months, especially when you KNOW apple will announce a new phone in June.

I agree BUT the new one they announce in June will most likely be the ATT one, I can't see Apple releasing a newer Verizon 4 months after the first one came out, The media and customers would flip out

Possibly. But I think my earlier scenario is much more likely - Apple will support the same hardware rev for both carriers, and verizon and at&t will continue to sell iphone 4 as the "discount" phone, replacing 3gs. I don't think Apple wants to fragment the market by having different carriers selling phones with different capabilities.

In your scenario, what happens? Verizon doesn't update until next january? Or a year from June? For how long will Apple keep selling different versions for different carriers? A year from June, when iPhone 5 with truly different design comes out, will Verizon customers have to wait an extra 6 months? Verizon will have only been selling the "iphone 4s" for a few months by that point, after all.

And, finally, why make the bet? Just wait a few months. If no new Verizon iphone is coming, buy the iphone 4 then - after all, you've already been waiting a VERY long time, and a few months won't matter. And if a new phone IS announced, so much the better.

Until A) a chip that supports LTE, CDMA, and WCDMA comes out or B) all carriers have retired these systems, you will see 2 different iPhone models.

true, but on the other hand I can see Apple having 2 release dates, February for Verizon and June/July for ATT to keep up with demand. Plus, maybe this was part of an agreement with ATT to end the exclusive contract, they have to have the updated phone first then verizon can get it months later? don't know for sure obviously but both case make sense. It will interesting to see how this plays out

I get what you're saying (in fact, that's exactly what I'm going to do myself: wait for my 3GS contract to expire in the June-ish timeframe and port the number to a Verizon iPhone 5).

OTOH, for people who need a phone now (and don't want an Android or Windows phone), this is a viable option. For some people, the AT&T network where they live/work/hangout is a giant failure. Obviously, they will be more motivated than you or I would be.

I gotta admit, the new WiFi hotspot feature alone has me intrigued. I almost bought a WiFi iPad from Verizon over Christmas just so I could get the MiFi 2200 hotspot deal with either the $35/3GB or $20/1GB monthly plans that goes with it (then sell the extra iPad, unopened, NIB). It'll be interesting to see how VZW prices out the 3G hotspot service in the next couple of weeks.

If, as rumored, the hotspot stops working whenever an incoming phone call comes in, seems kinda weak. (BTW, for a pretty good deal, look into a Virgin Mobile mifi. $40 pre-paid for a month of unlimited bandwidth, no contract required. They also have lower cost pre-paid with caps).

Yeah, not sure how this is going to work with the iPhone 5, so I have some time to compare options. In the mean time, thanks for the heads up on the Virgin Mobile hotspot...

I agree completely. I don't see Apple capable of handling such a demand from two carriers all at once. When the iPhone 4 was released, within days the shipping times increased to 4-6 weeks. Imagine what would happen if we add several million Verizon customers, we would never get our phones.

As far as phone calls......when I was with a CDMA carrier it would just push the call to voice mail if I was using data. Not sure about SMS.

uh, no...when the phone rings it superceeds any functionality on the phone. Phone always takes priority over data.

What he said. There is too much misinformation here about CDMA. When using data, if a call comes in, the data stops and the call goes through. Otherwise, could you imagine using a chat application? Your phone would be constantly unavailable for calls.

Cook said during the conference that there won't be a new iPhone this year in summer. Makes sense as Apple currently does really poorly during the holiday season (according to GfK data they only sold around 11 million iPhones in Q4/10, which is 3 million down compared to Q3). So I expect the iPhone 5 to be released in Nov 11.

No, Cook did not say that.

Although I don't think there will be one, Cook did not in fact say that. He basically said no comment.

That's a good point.

Fortunately I get to have my cake and eat it too. My wife approached me and asked me to buy the iPhone 5 whenever it's released on VZW so she can have my iPhone 4. I've turned her into an Apple junkie. :D

That's the way to go. I'm annoyed that my parents traded in their blackberries for Droid 2's a couple weeks back, despite my warnings that iPhone was coming.

GSM this, CDMA that, it's all irrelevant now. Specifics aside, what is Apple's number one skill? It's shifted from building the best products to being a world class selling machine. Marketing expertise beyond compare. They no longer need to build the best, mediocre will do. Mediocre allows greater profits which is Apple's other area of supreme expertise.

Now Apple has all the power & influence. Therefore simply declaring their product revolutionary does the trick, and the public buys it.

So it doesn't matter which carrier gets what & when. Apple will manipulate their customers perception and everyone will pump their money into Apple. They'll brag about all the money Apple is making, the massive sales volume & they'll all be thrilled.

Apple products will be everywhere having crushed the competition, and nothing else will matter to their legions of followers. It's simple really :)

Well, I agree and disagree with you there. Yes, Apple has indeed become a world-class selling machine. However I don't think it's at the expense of their quality by any means. In the 23+ years myself and my family have owned Macs and other Apple products, their quality has never deviated from the norm [for Apple]. From our Mac Classic and SE-30 to my Mac Pro, our iPods, etc. It's all been top-notch.

Supposing you're one of the first people to get an iPhone order in on February 3rd, you think I'm being far too optimistic to hope I'll get it within a week's time? :D I'm wondering because I go away on a road trip February 13th, and would LOVE to get the phone in my hands before I leave.

But then again, if I get it in 8 weeks I should probably consider myself lucky.

Well said. Unless people have genuine signal/coverage issues with AT&T I don't see customers switching from AT&T iPhone to Verizon iPhone. Most of Verizon's customers will be either existing Verizon customers switching to iPhone or brand new customers. Then again AT&T is offering iPhone 3GS for $49 now. Is the iPhone 4 worth a $150 premium for everybody wanting to get an iPhone?

If, come December 2011, you don't want to be upset that your fairly new iPhone won't run Apple's latest software, then I would say the $150 is worth the upgrade. However, if you are buying the phone for your teenage kid or you're simply happy with the phone doing what you did when you bought it and software updates don't matter to you, then its not worth the $150.

I guess the other major feature for the not-so-tech-savvy would be the vastly improved camera. That may make it worth it so you don't have to carry a point-and-shoot with you on vacation.

new iPhone 5

Several questions have arisen. Will the future release of an iPhone (5) be compatible with any network a user joins (Verizon, AT&T ,etc)? Also, will the new iPhone release be 4G ready or compatible when 4G expands? We know that the Verizon iPhone 4 is not 4G and existing iPhones in the AT&T network cannot port over to the Verizon Network. This is confusing and there is lots of money at stake here from a user perspective.

What are you saying? Will Apple create two different iPhones with different features on each depending on what carrier you have?
