Verizon iPhone Wireless Hotspot to Cost an Additional $20/Month

Sorry, but that argument is null to me as I can make calls and hear people and they hear me perfectly fine.

In fact, it's the Verizon folk I can't hear.

Ever stop to think that not everyone lives where you do douche? AT&T is crap for 98% of rural America. We get it that AT&T is a great network for YOU. Now move along and stop trolling the Vz threads.

BTW, you said that the Vz iPhone was going to happen when?

Not sure if someone already said this, didn't want to read through all the pages, but on Android you can just download the Hotspot Widget for free. I use it on my LG Optimus S.

Just sell me the bandwidth I use at 2GB increments.

I pay for 2GB for use with the phone. But if I want to use this data I have already paid for, differently, then I have to buy all new data? Criminal, but not unexpected.

If I download 500MB on my phone and if I use 500MB via hot-spot, I would be using 50% of the data I thought paid for, but I would be charged for two full data plans. How is that fair?

Same data. Same infrastructure.

I don't want my data for free, but I do want to get to use the data I pay for.

People who defend this move as "people want their stuff for free" are just...

Truth.

Timeout... I thought when this was released they said that the hotspot service was free? They really meant the ability is included free and pay for the service?

I clearly was not paying attention that day :D

I have free wi-fi hot-spot with TMo and my myTouch4g.

I hear eventually they will adopt a similar plan, which will oddly coincide with my installing PDANet or whatever so I CAN USE THE DATA I'M ALREADY PAYING FOR.

Got rid of my iphone and got a Nexus S on Tmobile. No contract. Pay As You Go. 10cents a minute on calls (i barely make calls). Unlimited internet $1.50 a day when i need it (there is wifi everywhere where i live). Free tethering and hotspot service.

I have spent no more than $20 this month so far. And i don't see why i should let the two biggest telco's try and suck me dry out of my money. Good riddance.

Its understandable, next time make sure you get a 1099 and you can deduct the whole thing as business expenses I know I do. But for this you have to be self contracted. I for one do not find my iphone that expensive at all but to each his own. Now I will go and play some games :D

Thats because no one cares, the reason verizon is doing this is bacause iphone users use their phone a lot and they know like ATT they are going to get hammered  Sure over all I figure google phone are doing ok but how many version of them are there but just one phone if all goes as plan and it probably will verizon is going to sell million of iphones 4 in the first week.

Iphone users live in a whole different world I for one use mine for almost everything can't wait for the ipad 2 so I don't have to use my laptop any more. :) I love my apple stocks glad I got them when they where a lot less never gave up on you apple.

LAME.

but not unexpected.

Do android useres have to pay more for hotspots?
Depends on the Android device...

I have a Nexus One running on ATT and can use wifi hotspot all day long, as much data as I want, for free. I'm getting an iPad 2 and will be using the built in wifi hotspot feature of Nexus One so I can use iPad anywhere, anytime for free on my ATT unlimited data plan..

If you have a n Android device actually tied to a carrier, then yes you have to pay for the most part..

I guess I will stick with my unlimited data at AT&T, if I have to pay extra $20 for tethering, I won't entertain switching to Verizon.

Somehow I love AT&T again

AT&T will make you pay extra for tethering, and they'll make you switch to a non-unlimited plan to enable it.

In that simple scenario, there is no real difference. However, in real life, with real users, the average mobile user uses much, much less than their allotted 2gb/month. However, when the average user gets a hotspot, he uses much, much more than he otherwise would have. The pricing model is based on the average user, not a user who uses exactly the amount allowed on his data plan. By definition of "average", this is what determines the total cost (average is the total sum divided by the number of users).

Real users pay a set amount for a set bandwidth, and you are justifying them being charged more to actually utilize the bandwidth? So you are OK with them overcharging the average user, paying for bandwidth he is not using, to subsidise others who are actually using the 2gb, but also charging extra to those who want to tether?

excellent

s. I know this is confusing, and really, it's the mobile companies fault for creating this mess where no one seems to understand the cost structure.

No, i understand it perfectly well. My provider lets me tether my iPhone4 onto their network for NO additional costs. They let me use the bandwidth I have paid for, anyway i want.

But carry on supporting US providers for screwing their subscribers.

Why would someone connect 5 devices to a Verizon 3g? Your bandwidth would grind to a halt. It's a waste of money plus It's a marketing ploy to sucker you all. I have been a Verizon customer since before they were Verizon. I am not under contract with anyone. I can pre order if I wish. I won't. I'm happy with my 50 a month account with t-mobile, iphone 4 factory unlocked, jailbroken, mywi, unlimited text and web on edge. It's slow but hell it's a phone, I don't need much bandwidth to get email and browse the internet and it works fine for me. If I want more their is plenty of wifi hot spots around. I won't be suckered into their marketing. Between Verizon and AT&T, let them battle it out. Apple comes out smelling like a rose no matter what.

The price of a new factory-unlocked is tremendous compared to the subsidized price. Also, Edge data rates are too slow for most people. I'm glad your satisfied with your carrier situation, but your scenario just isn't practical for most iPhone customers.

My take on all this: The only really big deal about portable hotspot is that it gives road warriors another option over using whatever kind of 'net access is offered by whatever hotel you're staying at. I've stayed in some places with pretty good internet service. I've also stayed at some really disappointing ones, where the speed is so poor, that just about all they're good for is checking email--even webpages often load too slowly to be worthwhile (to say nothing of attempting to use something like Slingplayer, Netflix, or my other friend, B. T. Orrent).

Personally, I'm a little more interested in what kinds of options for data plans and hotspots will be available for the much-rumored iPad 2. I'm grandfathered to the true "unlimited" plan for data on my original iPad from AT&T. If I can port that plan over to an AT&T iPad 2, I'll be sticking with them for the iPad--and then I'll have my choice of AT&T or Vz for my next iPhone (my iPad goes with me everywhere)

Sidenote, texting... texts are just data, so I use Google Voice, which treats them as such. If I didn't have to have a voice plan, I'd only purchase data and use GV for everything.

Doesn't work that way for calls; GV only routes calls to other phone numbers (such as your landline or your cellphones). The only thing it can replace is your texting plan.

Don't tell me there isn't collusion going on with Verizon, AT&T the the rest of their ilk.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Oligopoly.

The Verizon hotspot is free with the Palm Pre Plus.

If it weren't for an incentive like that, who would even buy one?

Don't you know? Hotspot 0's and 1's are extra special, with rad stickers on them and stuff. Hence the extra charge :;
