Got my Verizon iPad. Enabled LTE in settings. Chose the $20 plan. Was billed $20.

It's that simple. :D

On a side note, does anyone know how much it is per GB should I go over? I did not see it listed anywhere.

I did the same. I had to argue with the rep at the store this morning in order to let me sign up for the $20 plan. I had to show them the apple website where it shows the $20 plan exists, and then i had to sign up on the device. In addition to saying the $20 plan didn't exist, they also said it would be 3G only, not LTE. Thankfully I didn't let that get to me, because when it was finally activated, it certainly is on LTE. Hope nobody else falls for their trap.

Overages are $20 per GB for the 1GB plan, and $10 per GB for the other plans.

I guess it's just another argument for buying the iPad from a retailer rather than a carrier. Setting up the Verizon plan was as easy as pie. It activated instantly for me.

No activation fee.

I actually took my sim out of my Bionic, cut it down and am using a sim card holder and using that now. Freebie! I have unlimited data. It's just. Gonna be a b^tch to transfer all the time.

Confirmed.. LTE enabled and working just by signing up on the device.. took less than 3 minutes to get up and rolling on LTE.

only getting about 10Mbps, but I know it's LTE because that is much better than Verizon's 3G..

Question:
If I buy the Verizon or AT&T iPad without any activation or commitment, does it come with a SIM card right out of the box?

Yes. None of the iPads ship activated, and none of the data plans have any commitment requirements. The difference between the Verizon and AT&T versions is in the hardware because Verizon has a different 3G network and operates on different LTE frequencies from AT&T.

It's 10 bucks per gig!

Well this link says n/a for overages on the cc based pymt plans. Wonder what that means.

Cheers,

I'm actually wondering the same thing. Bought mine at Verizon today and they charged me the $35 activation fee and set me up on a recurring $30/2gb plan. And I can't manage the account from settings>cellular data>view account on the iPad. It says the SIM card is already active on a subscription that cannot be managed on this device. I have to log into the vzw website and manage from there.

I thought I could sign up and cancel as often as I wanted, and manage that directly from the device?

Anyone else had similar experiences at Verizon today?

Okay, I had a similar issue. I bought mine from BestBuy and they activated it in the store and 'waived the activation fee' but then I had the same thing where I couldn't make changes on the iPad itself. I called Verizon and explained the issue, and told them that I have no interest in a post-paid account, and that I want to be able to setup a pre-paid account on my iPad. I also told them that I want my existing subscription cancelled and deleted and that I want to manage the account settings, by myself, on my iPad. I got transferred to their 'customer loyalty' department and they did exactly what I asked for. Now I can access my verizon account settings on my iPad and it works exactly as you would expect/as Apple advertised. In other words, try calling them, and be polite, but don't let up on what you want.

I had pre-paid account before and the way I understand it was $20 a month for 1 gig, but which ever comes first, 1 gig or month and then they charge my CC again.

Can someone clarify the following:

Say I get the $20 for 1GB plan on the Verizon iPad (so prepaid). If I go over, will it just charge $10 per extra GB and continue to let me consume data? Basically, I need to decide whether to just get a $50 for 5GB plan or do this 1GB at a time plan.

Did you have to take it into a Verizon store? I called them and they said if I cancel my account I need a new sim card?!

From the link above, it looks like it just stops when you hit the limit until you purchase a new plan. That's a bit different from AT&T, which charges an overage against your prepaid balance.

I just went in to view my account, and it looks like if you run out of data you have several options. I have signed up with the 1GB plan, and it looks like it lets you purchase another 1GB for $20, or change to a higher plan. The new plan or extra data take effect when your old plan expires or has depleted to 25MB.

No, I didn't. I did it all over the phone. I told them that I dont want a post-paid account at all, and that I thought I would be able to manage my data on my iPad, pre-paying for a month at a time with no reoccuring payments. The whole process on the phone probably took just under 2 hours... I really wish some other company (TMobile...) had as good a network. =/

Edit: Also, to be clear, I didn't ask them to change my plan. I told them to delete/cancel it, and that I would handle adding a plan if I ever wanted one again through my iPad. I've also spent more time on the phone in the past 2 days than I have on my iPad. =(

Well you're the first I've known of that was able to get that done without a new sim card. I just went through verizon HELL today as I wasted 3 hours between 4 DIFFERENT verizon CSR's and a corporate verizon store who basically told me "no SIM for you! UNLESS you sign up for another plan!" I was just about ready to just return it and order an AT&T version as this verizon experience has left a horrible taste in my mouth. I gave Worst Buy a final chance and the girl at the counter was surprised that I actually wanted to return a new iPad the day after launch. Once I explained my situation to her, she called the wireless guys over who then proceeded to cancel the $35 contract and gave me a brand new sim. 15 minutes later I know have a pre-paid plan WITHOUT an activation fee. (You don't want to know how MANY CSR's at verizons helpline who thought you had to have an activation fee when setting up the iPad 4g). Well, well see how this VZW iPad compares to my iPad 2 AT&T in service.

sorry you had to go through all that. i've called about 3 different stores today and all got different answers. reading other responses, I'm just going to buy my verizon ipad from the apple store after i return my non charging wifi pad.

how does this prepaid plan work?? pay as you go, when you want to buy more gigs?? no monthly fee?

You buy a monthly plan upfront, and you can cancel it at any time. Once you use up your data, you can either buy more, or switch to a new plan. For Verizon, they offer 1GB for $20, 2GB for $30, 5GB for $50, and 10GB for $80.

ok thanks for reply. So it's still $20 month or whenever you use up the GB??

I see people saying you can suspend it up to 90 days if you want and then reactivate at any time??

Well I definitely have to keep it in suspend mode...my question is that the way it should be working..
No, they screwed with you as VZW and BB stores have been doing. BB tried to sell "activation" ..... just come up front we'll do it for you." By putting you on a "Plan" they get a commission. If you said "no" you could have walked out of the store and simply purchased data any time you needed it right on the iPad and not have to worry about suspending or whatever. Absolutely no activation fee that way just like with the ATT plan.

That's with the postpaid plan.

With the prepaid plan, when you run out of data, it just stops. You can then buy a new plan, which can be any of the ones available. You can cancel at any time, and you don't need to sign up for any plan until you need data again.

When you sign up for the prepaid plan, Verizon prompts you to set it to recur. That means that if you sign up today for the $20 plan and have it recur, on the 17th of every month you'll be charged $20 and get 1GB of data for the next month. Again, you can simply cancel the recurring payments at any time and restart whenever you want.

Finally, if you buy a $20 plan today, and then before the plan runs out you buy another one (e.g. a $30 2GB plan), the new plan won't take effect until the first one runs out (either from time or from using up all the data).

Thx for detailed response. So bc you can cancel the recurring payments, essentially you can prepay as you need data. Does the $20 plan have to be used up in a month if you deselect recurring payments?

Unfortunately it's not like prepaid minutes on a cell phone. If you don't you don't use it in a month you lose it. The data plan does stop if you use it all up before the the on they renewal date.

Sorry if its asked before. I'm thinking of switching my wifi version for Verizon but never owned my own cellular iPad before.

Are plans prorated? (I travel only 2days a month)
What hidden fees should I be prepared for?
Is there another contract free/activation free alternative?

It seems like the iPad has the best plans out there for mobile Internet but maybe I'm missing something.
