Unfortunately it's not like prepaid minutes on a cell phone. If you don't you don't use it in a month you lose it. The data plan does stop if you use it all up before the the on they renewal date.

Thats dissapointing. But can you still reactivate and deactivated whenever you want?

I had to call in to activate my iPad. I was greeted with a error message on the account screen during setup. I called the number, walked through some steps... account still screwed but they manually charged my card on file $30 to turn on my LTE. Data works, account doesn't. A Verizon rep will call me to resolve the ticket opened to manually setup my account. Until then, I have data until April 16th.

If you decided you need more, can you increase data plan at anytime?

For example, if you were going on last minute vacation and would be constantly using 4g?

You can purchase a higher plan, but it won't take effect until either your old plan runs out or you use up all the data. For instance, I have about 900MB left on my 1GB plan that I purchased Friday. If I purchase a $30 2GB plan, it will take effect the earlier of April 16th, or when I use up all the original 1GB.

Ok I see. Thanks for answering!

That's a shame. So if we can't get our iPads to set up ourself, Verizon charges us money just bc they pressed some activation button in corporate. Stupid.

Does Verizon have an app so you can turn all this stuff off and on, or increase your data package? My usage will be very very limited so I would probably only get the Verizon versions a safety net for IF I ever need it.

Same here. I just want to make sure I have connection at all times if need be.

We've been saying this all along:
You buy the 1 gb plan, you have 30 days to use it up, if you don't , it's gone forever.
Verizon will renew your 1 gb plan in 30 days, NONE of it carries over.
If you burn it up before 30 days, you have 2 choices, wait till the 30 days are up from the time you first bought the plan for the next renewal or renew at that time and you buy another 1 gb and the timer starts all over.
It's different for the higher tier plans where verizon will automatically add and bill you for another another 1gb for $10 at a time once you exceed, for example, the 2 gb plan until the next 30 day cycle. This is where it kinda sucks as if you exceed the limit the day before the 30 day cycle is over, and you don't use up the whole extra 1gb you just bought, it's gone.

it isn't an app, but you can go through Cellular Data > View Account in Settings to change your plan and view usage.

I think I'm getting 2 diff answers. Mag barn said you can't increase at anytime, you have to wait until your 30 days are up.

----------

Also, if you need more usage and you already ran out, then what? You can't use your 4g until next month?

You can purchase a new plan at any time. It won't take effect until your old plan runs out, either from time or because you use up the data.

Ok. I guess $20 month is fairly cheap and at least there's no more contract. I think il exchange mine for Verizon 4g today!

Exact same thing happened to me, Best Buy "sold" me the activation claiming that the service would be better if I let them activate it. Of course I was charged the $35 activation. I was able to completely clear it up at VZW today. It took only 30 minutes or so, but yes they did have to issue me a new SIM card. The SIM card was free, and since I cancelled the post-pay month-to-month plan that Best Buy sold me on, the activation fee is being refunded as well as any plan charges that were billed to my VZW account.

Once the new SIM card was placed in my iPad I was able to setup my Pre-Paid plan, so all is good with the world now.

Not True

I don't know if I can make it clearer, you can renew the very seconds you used up all your data.

I would like to thank all of you guys for this post. I had a 4G mifi from Verizon before I got the new iPad. When I went to activate the iPad I got an error message (most likely due to the fact that I had a post paid data month to month plan on their system already with the same e-mail address). Took it into Verizon store, they put a new sim card in it. Couldn't get it to work. Went to the Apple Store, they told me it was a verizon issue. Went to a different Verizon store, they got it up and running but the representative there freaking lied to me and just transferred my previous month to month post paid plan that I had previously with the mifi device to the iPad. By this point I had a working 4G on the iPad but was confused to why I hadn't seen a new charge on my card, searched this forum for some answers. Found this post, got the information I need. Went to a third verizon store and demanded that they get the prepaid plan up and running. I'm not one to get angry with sales people (even in the worst of situations) but it was like pulling teeth to get them to switch me over, and I finally got their district manager on the phone to make them switch me over. They did, was out $5 for a third sim card. All in all, wish that the second time I went to a verizon store they would have just set me up with the prepaid plan.

Thank you guys for posting the information. One thing I will contribute, is that if you are planning on temporarily stopping your prepaid plan when you go into the setting and hit "Cancel Plan" it will then ask you to either "Delete Account Now" or "Delete Account Later". Make sure you hit "Delete Account Later", otherwise if it you "delete account now" you will have to pay for a new sim card to reactivate your plan.

Yes thank you I know that's what you meant but I wanted to know if you could add more before you ran out. Like if you were going on vacation and knew you'd need more.

I AM SO CONFUSED!!!! :confused::(:confused:

Okay, first iPad ever. I go to settings, cellular data, and view account setting, then it wants you to sign up. The only option it gives you is to sign up for a recurring plan. You have to put your credit card info in and personal information, press next and it takes you to a screen that asks you to agree to Verizon's plan..blah blah....I didn't click next, just exited. I dont see where you sign up for prepaid plans, just recurring plans. Purchased mine through apple, didn't have to worry about Verizon or Best Buy BS.
Guess I am confused because my only option is to purchase a recurring plan. Any help?

It's a recurring pre-paid plan. Verizon has to stick it to ya some how. If you are planning on temporarily stopping your prepaid plan. Go into the setting and hit "Cancel Plan" it will then ask you to either "Delete Account Now" or "Delete Account Later". Make sure you hit "Delete Account Later", otherwise if it you "delete account now" you will have to pay for a new sim card to reactivate your plan. Hope that helps.

Okay, that makes more sense. I plan on using the data plan maybe 3 months out of the year for business, so I dont need a recurring plan. Thanks for your explanation mgweatherman08.

A quick thank you for everyone who has contributed to this thread. I just made the jump from iPad 1 wifi to iPad 3 4G. If I hadn't found this post, I would have gone with wifi only again. The flexibility of the pre-pay and month to month options without activation fees make this a really nice option for someone like me who will use 4g sporadically, likely when traveling. Thanks again!:)

I posted this in another thread, the exact same thing happened to me. I did not purchase it at best buy or a Verizon store. I did the cellular activation myself at home and was greeted with the same error message you were. The rep I called added the data plan for me but I still can't view my prepaid account. Still waiting for a call back, please keep us posted if they call you back with a resolution as I've seen a few people on here with the same issue.

Think the $10/GB is only for post paid.

For prepaid if you use up your allotted GB, you have to buy another one month GB allowance.
That has to be to good to be true!!! I can use my iPad until I reach my plans limit and Verizon will then stop my 4G usage until I pay again? I just figured when I reach my limit, it automatically purchases another plan.
