This is without question the iPhone.

1.) If Verizon pulled shennanigans and did not announce the iPhone, the news would be littered with "Verizon did not announce the iPhone today". It wouldn't matter what they announced.

2.) Steve Jobs has zero to do with this. If he is there, it will be to show unity among the two companies and to strengthen their relationship.

3.) It will NOT be the announcement of any Apple product that has ANY hardware differences beyond maybe a slight antenna change for the CMDA standard. That would be like Bill Gates announcing an XBox 360 game.

Overall, this is very pleasing. I can't wait!:apple:

Just one question...
WHY would you buy an CDMA iPhone 4 in February when, its probable that the iPhone 5 (GSM&CDMA in 1 phone) is coming out in.. oh say June?

Because it isn't.
Do you seriously believe :apple: would waste all the dollars engineering, designing and building 2 different phones to deliver months apart on the same network?

Because it might not work that way. February is CDMA iphone, june/july is GSM iphone. June/july 2011 is GSM/CDMA LTE iPhone all in one.

Feb 2011: Verizon iPhone CDMA.

June/July 2011: iPhone "5" with GSM/CDMA combo chip, works on AT&T or Verizon. The GSM chip will work with AT&T's newly 100% built out HSPA+ technology they call "4G" (which it isn't) and will promote that as their advantage.

June/July 2012: iPhone "6" with GSM/CDMA + LTE (ie. true 4G, with LTE networks on Verizon and AT&T supporting this technology)

This is the important questions

  1. Can you use phone and data at the same time?
  2. Can you FaceTime over 3G?
  3. Will they allow early upgrading?
  4. Will the prices for device and data plans match AT&T?

That's the important stuff.

If this is the iphone 4 on verizon then it makes sense that verizon would announce it. iphone 4 is not a new product therefore doesnt require another dedicated release by apple. Verizon could have negotiated this as part of the deal as a screw you to AT&T and given Apple and AT&T rocky past why wouldn't apple let them.

Also some food for thought...anyone else think Verizon may get exclusive rights to the white iphone 4? That may be only incentive to get it so close to product update - supposedly in June if history proves correct again.

Apple can start selling this CDMA iPhone 4 not just on Verizon but on other worldwide CDMA networks. The cost of losing even another 6 months to Android's ability to be sold on ALL US carriers was intolerable and worth the investment of hundreds of millions to produce a iPhone 4 variant for half a year to make BILLIONS in the long haul by stopping the marketshare bleeding in the US to Android. People are buying Android phones not because they don't want the iPhone, but because they don't want AT&T! If people like those Android phones too much as their OS gets better they might never switch even when the iPhone is offered to them.

PS: Companies like LG, Samsung, Motorola etc. make dozens of phones A YEAR, with variants every few months. You don't think a company like Apple with 50 BILLION DOLLARS IN CASH IN THE BANK can't afford to one time offer a special phone for 6 months to solidify its marketshare over the long haul? Also it is very likely that a CDMA variant of the iPhone was built and designed and perhaps even tooled for way back when the iPhone 4 was first designed with Apple all along knowing they would do this the moment their contract with AT&T expired so the costs were reduced as it isn't "all new."

Andy Ihnatko just confirmed his invitation. This is totally an iPhone announcement.

So explain all of the people such as myself who are on AT&T and have an Android phone

maybe apple is skipping this year and waiting til next year to release the 5 on both network. :D

dont know why some people are not liking this news.

its a win win for apple as they can now keep selling more iphones than andriod.

I'm totally cracking up at all the "No WAY Steve will let ANYONE announce this other than at an Apple event!!!!!11111!!!!!!" comments on here. I've never seen such blind hero worship in my life, particularly around a freakin' phone!

...I am a happy ATT customer but this is still exciting!

I'm a slightly disgruntled ATT customer. This is why this is exciting. Hopefully lots of other ATT folks will jump ship and clear up the network for the rest of us. 5:02 weekdays is B-RU-TAL.

I'd bet Apple had a CDMA version built for years now.

Hahaha, steve is no god, just has good stage presence and good people working with him.

I personally believe that a lot of Apples recent success is down to the genius of Jonathan Ives
