Feb 2011: Verizon iPhone CDMA.

June/July 2011: iPhone "5" with GSM/CDMA combo chip, works on AT&T or Verizon. The GSM chip will work with AT&T's newly 100% built out HSPA+ technology they call "4G" (which it isn't) and will promote that as their advantage.

June/July 2012: iPhone "6" with GSM/CDMA + LTE (ie. true 4G, with LTE networks on Verizon and AT&T supporting this technology)

I doubt that. Why go through the trouble of releasing CDMA only when you're going to release CDMA/GSM in a couple of months? Needless engineering waste. Either release CDMA/GSM immediately together or wait until LTE integration to do it.

  1. Can you use phone and data at the same time?
  2. Can you FaceTime over 3G?
  3. Will they allow early upgrading?
  4. Will the prices for device and data plans match AT&T?

That's the important stuff.

1. I suspect no. Although there were some solutions to all voice/data at the same time on Verizon they likely won't be invested in to focus instead on the build out of their LTE network and the iPhone "6" in 2012 that will support it. LTE of course allows voice and data at the same time.

2. I suspect yes. Verizon will try to separate themselves for a short while with this since AT&T will say CDMA is slower and doesn't allow voice / data at the same time. Perhaps Apple as punishment to AT&T for not allowing 3G Facetime in the first place prevents AT&T from reversing their choice until summer and the iPhone 5.

3. I suspect no. Verizon just last week eliminated any early price reductions until month 20 of a 24 month contract. Yikes, this one needs to be looked at closely for folks wanting to upgrade yearly to the newest iPhone, perhaps they will have a special program just for iPhone.

4. I bet they do, meaning Verizon is going to data caps.

Apple can start selling this CDMA iPhone 4 not just on Verizon but on other worldwide CDMA networks. The cost of losing even another 6 months to Android's ability to be sold on ALL US carriers was intolerable and worth the investment of hundreds of millions to produce a iPhone 4 variant for half a year to make BILLIONS in the long haul by stopping the marketshare bleeding in the US to Android. People are buying Android phones not because they don't want the iPhone, but because they don't want AT&T! If people like those Android phones too much as their OS gets better they might never switch even when the iPhone is offered to them.

PS: Companies like LG, Samsung, Motorola etc. make dozens of phones A YEAR, with variants every few months. You don't think a company like Apple with 50 BILLION DOLLARS IN CASH IN THE BANK can't afford to one time offer a special phone for 6 months to solidify its marketshare over the long haul? Also it is very likely that a CDMA variant of the iPhone was built and designed and perhaps even tooled for way back when the iPhone 4 was first designed with Apple all along knowing they would do this the moment their contract with AT&T expired so the costs were reduced as it isn't "all new."

Many computer companies update often too but not :apple:.
I just don't see Steve worrying about a quick CDMA phone release or the Android platform to change his way of doing business.
What happened last time :apple: released the Iphone and then released a newer version soon after?? Lots of outraged customers!

You'll see. Engineering waste? They built the CDMA version at the same time as the GSM likely and are only releasing it now due to contract issues. This still pales compared to other companies releasing many, many phones each year and Apple is willing to spend the $$$$$ (they have mountains of it) to maintain marketshare and not allow Android to continue to eat into their marketshare due to being only on AT&T.

IF APPLE were to make a CDMA iPhone they wont make too much in production each month because it's only for america because europe doesn't use CDMA!

Please bring some updated hardware out with it! Being British I couldn't care less about a Verizon iPhone.

My guess is this will either be a 4.5 release with some slightly better hardware á la Pre Plus, or Verizon will get four months of exclusivity with the iPhone 5.

However, the second idea seems a little far fetched.

U.S. Announcement

If it were to be released by Apple, it would make it more of a "world" announcement but it is being released by Verizon because it deals only with the U.S. Just my thought.

Browse and Talk Simultaneously? Proprietary Apps?

Will the VZW iPhone be able to surf the web (or use apps requiring a web connection) while the user is on the phone at the same time (assuming the only web connection is 3G)?

And how will this impact apps (ie NFL) that have been VZW exclusives? Will those come into the App store now, but only available for VZW customers?

A carrier announcement...

This announcement is more about the carrier than the hardware (if this is about the iPhone). This is not a new iPhone being announced. Yes, having Verizon carry the iPhone, in addition to AT&T, is huge news. Steve may be there, but it makes sense to have Verizon make the announcement in NYC.
My ongoing concern has been the supposed 5-year exclusivity agreement between Apple and AT&T. I guess the iPad deal shaved some time from that agreement. If that's true, then Verizon should have the iPhone this year. The 2/3/11 release rumor fits nicely, too.

I can't see Apple bringing an iPhone with more features in anytime soon though, think they'll stick to the June schedule as usual.

This is good for ALL of us.

I have an iPhone 4 of course on ATT.

When this comes out on Verizon... ATT will HAVE to upgrade their network even more. So they don't lose a glut of customers to Verizon.

Good stuff.

.

Or, they follow the SVDO spec and add the chip to the phone. Read the spec, the network (no changes from verizon required) is fine, it's the handsets that have to change.

To answer your first question, maybe. If Verizon is using SVDO and Apple supports it on the CDMA iPhone, then it can do simultaneous voice and data. There is also another feature that the Verizon iPhone will have, the ability to make phone calls :p.

As for the 2nd question about the NFL apps, it will have no impact. Either Verizon will make them available on the App store for everyone or it won't be on the iPhone at all. Remember, ATT has a lot of their own company specific apps and programs that are not available on the iPhone.

puzzling Evidence?

The Verizon Wireless website is currently showing Apple iOS as a filter option under smartphones- (although it is greyed out at the moment).

I still don't think att people will run to verizon. If you own an iphone now, it's because your coverage is good enough as is. Why buy a phone that doesn't work very well as a phone? I think they will pick up the current verizon users that have been waiting, people like me that don't have the coverage on att. Plus the etf that all the carriers have. Did the early upgrades that were allowed last year start a 'new' 2 years? or did it add 2 years to the current (meaning 2.5 years). I never saw a mention but I guess just a fresh 2 years.

Uhhh that has been there since Verizon has been selling ipads...

It shows that under all categories (featurephones, etc.).

It's a carry over from them carrying the iPad.

Yeah, only 90 million customers (not to mention the Sprint and T-mobile customers willing to switch to Big Red but not AT&T). What a small market!

Update 2 made me laugh out loud

Me too. You can't write this stuff :D

It is always a fresh 2 years.
