Are you EST? I'm planning on waking up tomorrow to preorder online with verizonwireless.com. Was that how it went last year? I'm hoping it's a quick transaction going through the Verizon website instead of apple
Yeah I am EST time. Last year I was still in college so I had homework and was up late anyways so I just stayed up a few more hours. We will see how I feel I will either stay up or wake up for it. It was a very quick transaction last year for me.
For a full price, off-contract phone, would it be better to buy from Verizon or from Apple directly? Which is better in terms of service (defective/replacements, and warranty stuff). I've always bought from Verizon directly in the past, but I'm planning to keep this phone for a while.

If I buy from Verizon, can I walk into the Apple store if something is wrong with it, or if it breaks (and get a replacement for $150)? Or will they say "sorry, you didn't buy it from here." Does Verizon still do the $50 refurbed replacement after the 1 year warranty is up?
There have been rumors that you can't do that through Apple for preorders but I don't believe them. It doesn't matter if you get it from Apple or Verizon. It is an Apple phone and they will take care of you. When I had to get my 4S replaced because of wireless issues I just went to the Apple store and walked out with a new 4S.

will verizon do preorders?? one of my lines is eligible not my main line could i transfer the upgrade to my line?? if so will i still be grandfathered in the data plan
Yes Verizon will be doing preorders. I am not sure on your second part though, I did away with my Unlimited data in favor of saving a ton of money a month with a shared plan.
I suppose it do not really matter either way.
Not really :p

Won't bump upgrade date?

My upgrade date is a month or so away. I called Verizon about getting it bumped up so I could pre-order the new iPhone, but they said they'll only bump up the dates for a new Android, followed by some explanation about a contractual agreement with Apple. Was the rep blowing smoke in my face or is this an actual thing? Were they paid by Google to say that?

Nope that is an actual thing. I don't think its in their contract with Apple per say but I think it is just their policy. They aren't getting paid by Google but they make much more money when selling Android phones compared to iPhones hence why they push Android so hard.

Hmm

Thats not good news. I wonder if you could upgrade to an android a couple of days before the release and return it on the 21st for the real choice. Stupid on Verizon's part to stick it to those of us who preordered the iPhone 4. Nickel and diming at its finest.

Not related to pre-orders but I'm struggling between AT&T and Verizon. I'm leaning towards Verizon and I imagine this thread is a bit biased but is Verizon better?

I'm going to be paying for my own cell phone service (it has been 8? Years since I have just used a company phone) and want to make the best choice.

No one can answer that for you. Look at the coverage maps online for where you are.

For me I like Verizon but I wouldn't mind being on AT&T since you have their highspeed 3G network to fall back on. With Verizon you fall back to a pretty slow 3G network. Although Verizon said that by mid 2013 they will have their entire 3G footprint covered by 4G.

Look to see if your company offers a discount at one over the other. My dad gets a 20% discount if we have a Verizon plan through his company so that is obviously an incentive for us to stay with Verizon.

My company does offer 20% for Verizon and 25% for AT&T. The coverage maps look pretty similar and AT&T is a bit cheaper after discount.

It would make sense to start pre-orders at 12 am based on your time zone so the servers don't explode like they have the past two years.

But, most likely it will be 3 am EST.

their website says they dont ship to non-billing addresses. is this true? my CC billing address is tied to my home address(obviously) and i wont be home. wanted it shipped to my job. you guys think i can order it then change the shipping address with a phone call?

What website? I ordered my 4s last year and had it shipped to my school when both my CC and my account is in NC and my school was in SC.

heres the message i got when i test ordered a 4s just now:

"In order to protect your purchase, this device must be shipped to your billing address. Please provide the billing address that is the same as the billing address for the credit card you will use. Signature is required for delivery"

They must have changed that because I know for a fact I got it shipped elsewhere last year. Change your billing address online till you get your new iPhone.

No one has answered this question, If i pre order at 10am that friday morning (mountain time) will that be too late and ill miss getting the phone the first day? I heard they get sold out the first few hours! What do you guys think

I hope they honor their promise. I'm dropping 8 benjamins on a device to keep unlimited data.

There really was no promise. For now, this is their policy. They can get rid of unlimited plans alltogether ten minutes after you get your new phone or ten years after you get your new phone.

How do you expect anyone to be able to tell you this? If demand is high, they may sell out. If they don't sell out, you should be fine. The 4S certainly didn't sell out by 10am that morning. The 4 did sell out in a matter of hours.

I just wanted to know how it was for previous devices! Thanks for answering! Ill take my chances, maybe since now that there are 3 carriers, its so spread out compared to only AT&T back for the iphone 4! At least I hope :)

I just want to say that this whole thread was really helpful. I'm upgrading my phone by myself for the first time, and I've been really anxious about doing it on the My Verizon page since I've only ever had experience preordering things on Apple's website.

I'm really excited to upgrade tomorrow night!

That's actually pretty smart doing the pre-orders in your own timezone. will take a lot of stress off Apple's / AT&T's servers.
