How is allowing unlimited data a GOOD thing?

Tragedy of the commons....

Maybe someday wireless bandwidth won't be scarce, but today it is, and I don't particularly want to be on a network that is slow because people using their connection to stream 720p porn all day.

I don't know the overall capabilities of the new 4g systems, but I fear it might be a joke. Sure, they'll be fast, but if everyone starts using them to stream HD to their iPads, will they hold up? Plus, 2 gigs of data isn't a lot of HD.

bait and switch again. first at&t then verizon. these companies rob every customer blind and soak in profits. Its as bad as the oil companies and the banks. why do we as a people allow them to continue to bilk us?

As the consumer market becomes more and more mobile, these companies that cannot or will not keep up with demand will hold back innovation and productivity.

These cellular companies need to invest more into their network robustness and maybe less on corporate bonuses so that they can better provide [unlimited] service to their customers.

Because we are North Americans. Actually doing something would require a major upheaval and the consequences are scary.

You are correct, but speculation coming from a statement made by the CFO is more than enough warning for me.

So what if AT&Ts execs made a non-public statement that didn't makes its way to the media. Would that be their saving grace?

You should guys move to Japan. We have Softbank here, with unlimited plan,
costing just over $60 for:
unlimited data
unlimited calls on Softbank phones (except for 21:00-01:00 )
speed reaching 2mbps

I could even make a call from the top of Mt. Fuji :D

Gotta love communism... :p

If they keep this up, and with the traction tablets and wifi spots will gain, they will price these plans out of reach for most and we will be back to old phones for calls/text...bring back the brick !!!

As long as I get grandfathered in after the release of the next iPhone I'm not too worried about it...kinda lame though.

I love how for the longest time everybody bitched about how 'at&t is the devil' and that if only the iPhone were on Verizon, things would be so much better because Verizon is so much better. And now that it's finally here, the Verizon iPhone's plan is slowly becoming the same as at&t's.

Will T-mobile and Sprint use unlimited plans when they get the iphone?

Anyway, very few people need this large plan option. The deals people get from these carriers on large plans are great if you need them, whether unlimited or 15GB. But the rip off is with the lower tier. 200mb or 15GB. That's your option. They need to lower the cost of the 200mb and add some intermediate plans.

Well, I guess that is that. I am staying with AT&T. My unlimited data is grandfather claused.

I think the main argument against AT&T was dropped calls, not data plan.

THAT didn't take long.
The old tried 'n true: bait them and switch them technique.

Where are the VZW fanboys at? Remember, the ones that went on and on about how AT&T is most anti-customer company ever when they dropped their unlimited data.

They're either in shock since they've experienced first hand it's the phone, not the network. Or they're seasoned Apple customers well aware of Apple tactics.

As technology moves forward, mobile companies want to pretend we are in the past decade; and treat us all as if they are doing it's customers a favor. 2GB for a lot of people (based on many apps available today) is about < 1 days worth.

Data is limitless, if they had the damn infrastructure in place to support the needs. Guess what's going to happen in 5 more years? Hmmm more data needs anyone.

This is just backwards thinking, and non innovative. Not picking on Verizon, they are all to blame. But we accept it, as their really is no other option if you want iPhone or any other smartphone in the category.

They all better start thinking ahead 5 years from now, because it will be here before we know it.

That's pretty rape. Here in Italy, mobile internet costs 5€ (7-8$) for 3GB, and is given away for free when you switch carrier keeping your phone number. Without long-term contracts.

Anyways, America desperately needs to get a carrier-free iPhone. It's like every carrier can make its own prices because every smartphone is exclusive to them. A prepaid iPhone on Virgin would shake the market quite a bit, I guess.

".... oh, an iphone, that sucks that your data plan isn't as good as mine...." It's really had nothing to do with Apple and everything to do with the carrier.

Yet the unlimited data plans disappear soon after carrier adopts the iPhone.

Oh No... it has nothing to do with Apple.

That's intersting....I've never passed 320mb. I feel pretty confident most people don't use 2gb in one day.

That's more like "disappear with the coming of LTE, so that the network doesn't get killed".
Has nothing to do with Apple.
