We're many times the size of, say, Britain, but the UK has four legitimate national carriers and that's before you consider MVNO mobile operators. [snip] In the US, the Sprint and TMobile networks are skeletal and there are serious coverage gaps even with ATT.
The US is 39 times larger in area than the United Kingdom.

There's more of a "not in our backyard" mentality about the US, too. People complain about cell phone coverage but would turn around and vote "no" on a proposed cell tower that's close to their home because it's ugly. It takes years for companies to propose building permits. One reason companies don't invest in infrastructure is their hands are physically tied until it's approved.

Cell phone coverage sucks everywhere, so it would be nice to see Apple get the iPhone on every carrier (Sprint and US Cellular offer the best coverage here).

Great news, so everyone can the data-plan they want to have and want to pay. That's customer-care deluxe!

Verizon and Apple, making the world a better place.
And flipping the bird to all those bandwidth-hogs at the same time.
Changing everything, again. :D:apple:

Figures...

Nice way to say... BAIT & SWITCH

"Verizon Wireless kept its unlimited plan for its first iPhone customers as it "didn't want to put up a barrier" to consumers who wanted to try out the device on its network, the executive said."

This isn't a Bait & Switch! You people have zero idea what you're talking about!! What exactly did they definitely promise (bait) and then not deliver (switch?) ZERO!

If you got an iPhone 4 now you could take advantage of an unlimited $30 plan for the duration of your contract. They delivered on that. No bait. No switch. Nowhere did I read that this rate was to last forever. Can someone post a link to any site or ad that promised this rate would last forever? And now they've given a head's up that that will change this summer. Just like has been mentioned in the press and Apple sites for weeks. So, how many companies do you know give you several months advanced notice of an increase so you can take advantage - if you choose - of a cheaper rate or plan? Can someone post a link to someone who does? If you choose to wait for an iPhone 5 that's your choice. Nowhere did I read that Verizon promised or imply the same unlimited rate would be available this summer to those who got an iPhone 5. Can anyone post a link to a site or ad that said this? Companies routinely offer discounts and incentives to clear out near EOL products - including Apple. So, stop the bitchin'. If you don't like it don't get it.

And I'm calling you people out... let's see some proof - any proof - of anything remotely resembling a bait and switch. What was definitely promised and what wasn't delivered? And support it with links. Don't expect to see anyone post anything because there is none...zero..nada. Just the usual ignorant smack talk with no proof.

if apple did a cheaper phone like a pay as you go phone, and had it on all carriers in the usa, then i believe these telecom companies would be forced to actually be competitive.

Seriously dude...wtf do you think you're talking about?
Apple makes the HARDWARE. Apple has NO say in crafting the plans.
Apple's CDMA and GSM phones CAN be pay as you go phones but ONLY if a provider is willing to provide a pay as you go plan for them.
Case in point, there are pay as you go sim plans available in Europe SPECIFICALLY for the GMS iPhone. (Plans that put the most affordable AT&T plan to utter shame.)
(Just one quick reference via Google: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/02/how-to-take-you/ )

Even in the US there are ways to use an iPhone as a pay as you go phone. ( http://osxdaily.com/2010/08/01/prepaid-iphone-setup-iphone-for-pay-as-you-go-plan/ )

*face-palm*

Don't be an idiot. (Try hard)
Are you going to walk into a Ford dealership and start crapping bricks about bait and switch because you can't buy a Pinto anymore (even though they offered them in the past)?

My point is, while they DO have to honor existing contracts, merchants can chose to discontinue products and services whenever they please. It's not bait and switch.
It'd only be bait and switch if they continued to bait new customers into a purchase by saying they offered unlimited (AFTER they stop making the unlimited plans available) but then only offer a limited plan.
(Or if they suddenly and without your consent changed your order upon purchase to limited data after you signed up for unlimited.)

Sucks to be in the States. Over here in Hong Kong, we get a free iPhone with an unlimited data plan and 2000 voice minutes with texting for US$52/month :)

And how exactly do you know that the iphone 5 will arrive on Verizon on Summer? I assume you have proof, because you LOVE proof. Am I right?

This is a bait and switch, but not in the usual sense. Because we have not heard from either Apple or Verizon that the iPhone 5 will be available in summer we can only assume that the iPhone 4 will continue to be latest iPhone at that time, until we hear otherwise from them.

So summer arrives, Verizon cuts their unlimited data and the iPhone 4 is still being sold (until proven otherwise). What is a usual prospective iPhone 4 customer going to do, they'll read the reviews of course. They look up their old magazine where they distinctly remember there being a review, and they see it clearly. Verizon has things ATT doesn't they have unlimited data + mobile hotspot for $20! Holy flickers that's a good deal! i want to get in on that! So they stroll down to the Verizon store and state their wish to purchase the elusive and superior verizon iphone 4. One of two things happen here, either the customer notices that the data plan has changed (we probably would), or the customer could be a "tech newb" (like my mother) and not know all that fancy smanchy language that Verizon puts on the 20 page contract. Either way the customer ends up getting the phone anyway. I mean their contract is up, they need a new phone, and they drove all the way to the store, it's silly not to buy the phone now.

Bait= Reviews and the little stars on reviews are influenced by Verizon's current data plan. While some websites will obviously update their pages, other websites won't and magazines certainly won't.

Switch = customer arrives at the store, with money in hand. They leave with a phone that is not as good as what they read in the review.

You can't claim that the initial positive reviews that have been affected by Verizon's Unlimited Data will have absolutely no effect on Verizon's iPhone 4's initial AND continuing popularity... Verizon knows this, thus they make the iphone 4 as good as possible for the reviews, then scrape out the good stuff later.

You have been pwned. Show yourself out.

I bet Verizon's internal metrics are showing the bandwidth hits from all their new iPhone customers are starting to take a toll.

More likely the bandwidth hits from around 2% of their customers, who thus aren't as profitable, and should be induced to leave by dropping unlimited plan, and then replaced by more profitable customers who want the cheaper limited plans.

"Verizon Wireless kept its unlimited plan for its first iPhone customers as it "didn't want to put up a barrier" to consumers who wanted to try out the device on its network, the executive said."

More likely an introductory sale price. No one complains BAIT & SWITCH about all the "first month free!" offers they get in the mail.

I was going to get the iPhone 5 with Verizon when it comes out. Not if this happens though. It's a smartphone. With tons of apps. And you want to limit data? Today's smartphones demand unlimited data otherwise they're nearly useless.

Question about Data

I am new with the iPhone. How do I tell how much data I am using? I looked in settings then usage and under Cellular Network data there is Sent and Received. Sent shows 2 MB and Received shows 100 MB. Which one is it that shows data usage by the owner?

And gas is what.... around $8.00 US @ gallon? LOL!! Sucks to be in Hong Kong. Enjoy your wireless plan though!

Please read, quote and respond to my post at the end of page 4. Don't feel like posting it again but it argues against that.

Thanks so much for totally proving my point! That does not at all describe a bait & switch Professor.

Get it through your foggy head...they have fully disclosed the terms and conditions of their offer and have not promised anything in their ads/website or contractually that they didn't deliver at the advertised price. That's bait & switch! Not this bizarre (to say the least) nonsense you have concocted. Look it up if you can read that is.

P.S. And while you're at it learn how to spell!! I think in your own eloquent words..."You've been pwned." LOL!!!

To be fair, a gallon of gas in Hong Kong can last you about a month unless you decide to drive a couple circles around the island, which you can still do with a tank of gas in an average car.

Gee, that sounds like a fun life........

Anyway, let's say a typical fill up is 15 gals. And you use a tank a month as stated. You're paying roughly $60 a month ($8@gal) more than your US counterpart ($4@gal.) So, essentially your cheaper wireless rate is totally offset by the higher gas price. ;)

Why are you justifying enormous cell phone rates by commenting on gas prices? The US is becoming an expensive place to live, because us workers are underpaid, wages are stagnant, and prices are going up... ;)

I would rather have cheaper cell phone and cable TV rates than cheap gas.... I would rather have a public transportation system than expensive monthly payments to ATT, VZ, Comcast, etc... however, they are separate in my book... unless our taxes cover all these products... which they kinda with all the subsidies to private corporations

Riven, a game for iOS wieghs in at a hefty 1.01GB download.

Many would argue that they can use Wifi, however some people just don't have Wifi, some people use the phone as a modem. Some people are not in range of a hotspot.

Why should those people have to be at an inconvience?

What about heavy social networkers? People who are posted every second of thier life in pictures and videos? The youtubers? Netflixers?

Just because you use your iOS device lightly does not justify for others.

Unlimited data should not be dropped. It should be more of a premium option. Those who want unlimited data I am sure will pay extra for unlimited data.

thank god for my sprint plan.

Why not just pay for the data you use?

They could offer a new unlimited plan but it would probably be $100 a month... So why not just do like AT&T and pay $25 for 2 gig, and $10 for each additional gig.

Anyone using less than 10 gigs would save money.

untill sprint and tmobile get the iphone, expect the consumer in the usa to be raped with crazy data plans from att and verizon.

this is not a surprise.

if apple did a cheaper phone like a pay as you go phone, and had it on all carriers in the usa, then i believe these telecom companies would be forced to actually be competitive.

What makes you think if Sprint and T-mobile get the iPhone it will make it cheaper on us, the consumer?
