Either he doesn't think verizon will get the iphone 5 or he doesn't think it's coming this summer. Personnally I think it will be a minor bump akin to 3G>3GS, the exciting stuff will be happening summer '06

Summer of '06?

Sweet, only 996 years to go!;)

I can not speak for any one else, but i have hit 7gb of data use in a moth, and AT&T did not charge me any more, so not sure where this 5gb cap is coming from.

Well, I thought there was already some quoted text from the policy, which if it was authentic, states only that they reserve the right the screw you, doesn't necessarily guarantee it.

Again... the quoted text was for Laptop/Data Connect plans, not iPhone unlimited data plans.
There is no soft cap for iPhone unlimited data plans.
The only thing that is barred is in the iPhone unlimited plan tethering.

Update: The Wall Street Journal has updated its article to note that McAdam later revealed that the $30 unlimited data plan would be a temporary offering, with the carrier set to shift back to tiered pricing "in the not too distant future".

Thanks for the heads up that Verizon is planning to screw over everyone the moment they switch, ala the "unlimited data" 3G iPad with AT&T. Well, I suppose we have an issue with both carriers price fixing and both determined to screw over the customers... Here I was hoping Verizon would be a better carrier and provoke AT&T to do likewise...

Got it, my bad.

I think that might've been the plan (the 3G->3GS) originally, but there are a lot of people out there that really want to see the current antenna system go away before the buy. So, I think it's hard to say one way or the other for a redesign. Personally, I love the look of the current phone and won't care if it's just a faster processor. I'm just hoping for a 64GB version this time around. I'm currently sporting a 16GB 1GEN iPhone and can't wait for the trade up!

How are you people not breaking the 150/200mb plans? Those are so small!

Between a couple emails, visiting a couple websites, downloading a couple apps...

I don't stream video or music, or hotspot but I use 1-2GB on my phone every month without any problem.

I think it should against the LAW to say "unlimited" and then place a limit on it. It's bait & switch, pure and simple. I think they should have to pay a fine, reimburse the customer somehow and then give them the unlimited they signed up for.

I think the average person has no idea what 5GB is so perhaps it would be an interesting commercial to show the layman how much internet is involved in a 5GB limit. "5GB -- that's a 1,000 songs or 10,000 web pages or 15 full length hollywood movies" -- something tangible so that people who don't know will understand that it's a lot of data. At least that way, the carrier isn't just lying to the country when they say Unlimited and then impose a cap on it.

Fully agree. But whether there's a law against it or not, having users try to use unlimited data on a wireless network is going to result in poor service, by definition. They shouldn't sell it, but neither should users demand it.

These types of posts kill me. Could you please explain WHY you feel he'll be "extremely disappointed come june/july"? If it's your opinion, just explain what that opinion actually is! Is it really that hard to have a position and to clearly explain it?!

The OP said he was expecting a second Verizon iPhone launched in June/July, and the next guy said he'd be disappointed. I don't see your confusion about the meaning. Just to be clear - the next guy was saying he didn't think there would be a second Verizon iPhone in June/July this year.

Wifi.

You probably download alot of apps, because I surf the web quite a bit, check email constantly, use apps the require web usage, download a couple apps and a couple songs every month over cellular and easily fit under 200mb.

Do you keep your wifi off or not have wifi at home or work?

I have an exchange account that gets 50 emails a day, plus a gmail account and I spend 90 minutes in the car every day running my business, browsing the web off and on etc. That business is computer support, so I know how to use every little nook and crannie of the phone's features. Maps while driving at times, stock quotes, facebook updates, logmein on 3G. And I get about 500 MB a month. I don't see how anyone not doing streaming can hit over 1 GB. ATT's numbers bear that out, as they said 65% of users are under 200 MB and 98% below 2 GB.

unofficial wifi at work
wifi at home
wifi everywhere in NYC

i don't stream youtube or netflix all day long. i only get apps via my laptop.

my wife only does facebook and email and she only uses around 150MB a month. i hit 1.5GB one month and average just under 1GB per month or less

I have unlimited ATT but I'm debating changing to tethering 2GB because I barely use 300MB per month.

Who says I'm not enjoying life just because I use more than XGB's per month?

With the exception of something like streaming audio, Xgb per month generally means X minutes staring at your cell phone per month.

Away from home.

Something like say, 10GB of cell data is quite a lot of minutes staring at your phone.

Maybe someone can help with this question. Say the unlimited option ends before June when I am due for an upgrade but currently have a Blackberry Bold with $30 unlimited data. When I purchase a new iPhone 4 or newer in June will I be forced to switch to new tiered data or will I be grandfathered in with unlimited.

Figured maybe someone from ATT can answer who switched to iPhone from Blackberry last year after unlimited data was scratched as an option.

I took the 15GB plan when I signed up with an iphone in November. 2 months in and I haven't cracked 200mb each month. I'm going to drop down to the lower plan.

Most likely, but ATT's behaviors are not guaranteed to be the same as Verizon's.

If they're giving you $400 to help you buy an iPhone, they're going to want you to sign on the dotted line for their conditions.

Man Americans get ripped off. On one hand you have a CDMA network were you dont get the full features of an iPhone and on the other you have a GSM network that has poor coverage.

Over in Oz. I pay $115 for $800 worth of calls and 9GB of data. My girlfriend pays $63 for $600 worth of calls and 3GB of data. And the download speeds average 3-6Mbs and the upload speeds average 2-3.5Mbs. Our worst provider would be equivalent to AT&T

You are comparing Australia to the United States. The United States has 280 million more people, roughly, than Australia has. Not to mention that the US is larger in size than the Australia. There is only so much bandwith to go around and becomes far more difficult to cover every single square inch of the United States, as oposed to smaller countries. Also people in the United States are more spread out, corner to corner, than they are in other couhtries around the world.

It's not that difficult to setup a cellular network for roughly 22 million people in Australia, as opposed to over 300 million people in the United States. Heck California's population is larger than all of Australia. And that is merely one state.

If you're an existing AT&T customer, you can retain you unlimited data plan when you upgrade your phone.
I just upgraded my 3GS (broke screen) to a Samsung Focus (I know... save it.) and they let me keep my $30 unlimited data plan. No hidden 5GB softcap either. (We checked while I was standing in the AT&T store.)
