Yep. This is beautiful. I just wish ATT would get rid of the grandfathered unlimited plans to get rid of the leeches who are slowing down the network for the rest of us and making our prices higher by using their phones as home wireless hotspots and the like.

"Leeches?" That's a little harsh. We were grandfathered in because of customer loyalty and it's a smart business practice on AT&T's part. Too bad you didn't get in on that deal.

Once you use it, you can't live without it. It's a great feature....and all of you Verizon users have been left in the dark by your leader (Verizon). How can anyone argue against having it as an option? You Verizon Fanboys amaze me.

The exact same thing could be said about unlimited data:

Personally, I'd take unlimited data over simultaneous voice/data ANY day of the week.

When someone claims that "leeches" are the reason for unlimited becoming non-existent, it is basically that person admitting that they have no clue what they are talking about in just about any sense of today's tech world. The idea that the companies are eliminating unlimited based on a small group is comical

The companies see the huge financial gain in putting small data caps on the public for overages & fees that they need for a better bottom line

I have unlimited with AT&T already (and loving the concurrent voice and data!). I'm not sure why Verizon doesn't offer more choice with their data plans. Competition is supposed to benefit us consumers.

Go Verizon! This is great. Competition is just what the iPhone needs!

I agree. The public clearly wants reasonably (low) priced unlimited data plans.

Without competition, any network will prefer to manipulate its customers for
the purpose of extracting more revenue... and will not care very much what
those customers want. Once that network isn't the only game in town, they
have to care more about their customer's desires.

Presently, the networks complain about the high data demands of a few
applications (e.g., watching/sending video) and a few users. They use
this as an excuse to place caps on data plans, so they will not have to
serve those applications/users (or they'll garner a huge fee for doing so).
Ultimately, they'll rebuild their networks to more easily support those
few applications/users while offering flat-rate unlimited data plans.

In the interim, we'll have to dance deftly around their shifting offers
to try and get a decent deal. Expect the networks to keep us dancing
until they find the formula that maximizes their profits.

So will users who take this unlimited plan now
be grandfathered when the plan is eliminated?

I agree.... I think the main problem is ATT they just SUCK. they don't spend the necessary money on beefing up their network and it suffered as a result. I DON'T think that verizon will suffer the same fate. I have much more faith in their ability to keep up with the demand placed on their system. Also, I'm pretty sure verizon has the best 3G speeds out of the carriers in the US although with HSPA+ and the like I'm guessing that EVDO is falling behind slightly but then again .... LTE BABY!!!!! Main reason I'm not getting an iPhone is becuase

  1. android is better (for me)
  2. LTE

Two out of Three

iPhone on Verizon. Check.
$30 unlimited data plan. Check.
Simultaneous calls and data...

..AT&T is like the girlfriend who was the only hottie in high school. I'm in college now and I can't wait to dump her.

i have the unlimited $30 plan on verizon with my blackberry, and its truly unlimited. i hit 500 gb last month with no penalties.

Don't want to call anyone out, but 500gb on 3G is basically impossible in 30 days, even at 24/7 constant download or streaming.

Example, on ATT, I can stream Slingbox at an avg 900kbps, which ends up around 300mb per hour. That's 8gigs a day, 27/7 streaming. 30 days, 8 gigs per....240 per month would be an insane amour of data.

So either you streaming video at 2mb+ 24/7 or just making **** up for effect.

I am actually disappointed that Verizon isn't being more aggressive in their pricing.

I've been hoping for some real competition between the two and so far I haven't seen any yet.
it really shouldnt come as a surprise, they got the iPhone locked in and they know people will pay to be able to use it on their network so its a win-win for them and they laugh all the way to the bank.

But at the same time people demanded the iPhone be on verizon and they got what they intentionally wanted

that is fair to say, one thing that really kind of cripples the ultimate experience is the simultaneous voice & data (i kind of dislike the term Multitasking, as its obvious regardless of carrier you can multitask on the iPhone's iOS. :p).

Most of us iPhone 4 users are tied down in a contract so it doesn't matter much yet... After we are free to leave the competition will heat up a bit

Please, you're not tied down. You are perchance, unwilling to pay the termination fee to switch before your current contract is up. If VZW offers a financially attractive package, depending on the details, you could even save money or break even by paying a termination fee and subscribing to a VZW plan wherein you pay less per month.

Noone has a gun to anyone's head.

However, all this chatter before official plans are known is useless and inane.

I did get grandfathered in, actually. But I've never gone over 2 GB. But I figure an extra $5 a month would be worth it if some month I really needed to abuse the system. And I like the peace of mind. But yes, the people who use the service to allow their jailbroken iPhones to be wifi hotspots for their home network etc are leeches, and no that's not a little harsh. They are hurting the other 98% of the users who obey the terms of the contract that they signed. When did "getting over on everyone else" become something defensible?

When they remove my grandfathered status I will not whine like a baby who has had his toys taken away, either.

Unlimited plan for limited time

Folks, they updated the article. Verizon says it's a temporary offer and that they will be switching to tiered service in the not too distant future.

Ever been on a crowded highway at rush hour?

How about a toll road.

If you don't pay extra for your use of a limited resource at peak usage times, everyone's performance suffers. No matter how many lanes are built on that highway, more traffic will come. Put up a toll with congestion pricing, and bam, 10% less people on the road, 5X more speed. Does everyone win? No, but that's because no solution can make everyone win. Someone has to change their behavior, and putting a price on the resource determines who will change their behavior.

It's sad when people don't understand how decisions are made in this world of limited resources.

I'l never understand how people can switch to Verizon's network. I have to multi-task for my business by running apps, texting, surfing the web, all while being on the phone. How on earth are people going to be productive on Verizon's network?

How much would we get done on ATT with no coverage in this area? You would do ZERO business here. Absolutly zero. How can you talk and surf with no signal? Some of us have to pick our service by the coverage at our location.

Can verizon seriously MAKE everyone getting the iphone get an unlimited plan while allowing people who get Android or any other type of smart phone have tiered options?

That sounds totally f-cked if you ask me.

It almost doesn't even sound legal, and if I was apple and this report were true (I could be misunderstanding), I would be thoroughly pissed off.

Unlimited on all the carriers has a "cap". They don't shut off your data at the cap but they state in your contract that can impose overage fees if you go over it.

iPhone on AT&T was the only phone on the network that has it's own TOS and nowhere in there does it state there is a softcap after going over the 5GB "softcap" because there isn't one.

Read the tos. Simple.

A voice plan is not required with DataConnect plans.

We may, at our discretion, suspend your account if we believe your data usage is excessive, unusual or is better suited to another rate plan. If you are on a data plan that does not include a monthly MB/GB allowance and additional data usage rates, you agree that AT&T has the right to impose additional charges if you use more than 5 GB in a month; provided that, prior to the imposition of any additional charges, AT&T shall provide you with notice and you shall have the right to terminate your Data Service.
