Just got off the horn with Verizon

You can add a new line and keep unlimited data.

You can preoder and add a new line to your existing account at 3:01AM EST and not lose it in a simple way.

GO to My Verizon, Click PRE SELL.. Add the new line. Purchase the iPhone you want on the NEW line.

Find yourself a dummy phone [a non smartphone phone line a Moto Razr or flip so you'l only be charge $9.99 for the extra line instead of $40 for a smartphones typical data package. Then switcht he iphone 5 to your smartphone line

You can keep unlimited data, NOT pay $600,700,849 for a iphone, just at the extra cost of $10 a month.

Only issue is you have a phone with a new two year contract. No biggie..

Wouldn't that only work for people on family plans ?

I would double check this. I have been told if you are a single phone on an account and you add a line to that account it changes to a family plan this making you do the share data plan. If you already have a family plan then your are okay.

I just got off the phone with Verizon, and I asked about doing an early upgrade. My upgrade date is October 8th 2012, and I asked if they were doing any kind of early upgrade for people that are so close. He just told me that part of Verizon's contract with Apple does not allow them to give early upgrades to anyone, and that I would have to wait. I'm pretty sure I was just lied to....

Almost the same boat. My upgrade date it October 7, 2012 and would love to pre-order because if I have to wait I know it'll take a lot longer to get it.

when i called they told me that they have flexibility to give upgrades 30 days before you are officially due, for what its worth

While this may work and might save you money, I'm not so sure it's as good of a deal as you're making it sound. You would be on the hook for $10 a month for 24 months. So basically for the 16 GB version you would be paying $199 + $240+ $36 activation fee=$475 instead of the $649 price upfront. Still probably worth it for $174, but not a slam dunk if you don't have an old dumb phone hanging around.

I rather it this way because when and if my girlfriend decides she's going to move her account and joint with mine, it'll end up cheaper. Because with Verizon's history of "plans"... the "shared everything" will only last but so long.

The questoin is who you've been told by? I've confirmed this with now.. five different verizon reps all saying the same thing.

And yes, I'm a single phone on my account. Thay can't FORCE an existing account into shared everything if you are not upgrading THAT existing phone. You can add a new phone to the account and they will not move you to a family/shared plan.

That makes perfect sense. Good luck pre-ordering tonight!

So, perhaps a silly question, but I just want to confirm: I'm on a Verizon family plan where all users except me have 4G LTE unlimited data. I have an iPhone on unlimited 3G. If I pay the unsubsidized price for the iPhone 5, am I eligible to move from unlimited 3G to unlimited LTE? Just trying to make sure they aren't classifying the move from 3G to 4G as some kind of upgrade that they can use to force me into a share everything plan.

Don't they just swap you to a share everything plan?

If they do that, you have to add the smartphone (iPhone5) line @ $40/month So $40/month x 24months = $960.

Even if they let you drop it down to the "dumbphone" price of $30/month that would be $40first month + ($30/month x 24 months) = $760

Add to those above totals the subsidized price of the device and you're still not really gaining anything versus just buying one off contract.

That's why I was inquiring. I've heard about this type of "loophole". I was presuming that the whole "Add a line, get a subsidized iPhone 5" was on the OLD plans (as in $90 for primary line, $10 for each additional line, every line has their own data plan ranging from 2GB to those who have unlimited for $29). So under that price structure, you would have to add a line ($10/month) and put data on it (to get the iPhone) @ $29/month. So once again, you're looking at ~$40/month for this extra "line".

That's why I wondered if they somehow would let you cancel data on that line if you switch it over to a "dumbphone" and put the iPhone on your current line.

In that event, it would be a bit more worth it....

So how exactly does this thing work?

P.S. For what it's worth, I don't intend to do anything like this -- I'm just curious. I have our lines set up so they alternate. Every year, one of our lines is eligible for an upgrade.

So you add the extra line, that comes with a new phone (at a subsidized price), and i of course pick the iPH5. So along with the 9.99 since my new line will be a smart phone i need data, so i just pick whatever the cheapest data package is.

Then after i get the iPH5 i switch it over to my line that has the unlimited data.

Then i switch the dumb phone that i bought off of ebay to the line i added and since it is a dumb phone it does not need data so i drop data on the line i added.

So after all of this switching i am left with a new iPH5 on my unlimited plan, and an extra line for an extra 9.99 a month (plus tax and such).

I think the question is "Will they let you drop the data?" or is it part of the package for 2 years?

Got the 4S for verizon on a 2 year in November. So Im probably going to pay the 250 etf because its the easiest solution. I will probably have to switch carriers just to keep my number though

I have a few questions about VZW upgrading that I can't figure out.

1. I have 2 iPhone 4S's (my wife and I on 2 yr contracts) and I am definitely getting the 5. If I want the 32GB, why wouldn't I add a line, pay $299 and then cancel it +$350 for a total of $649 vs the $749 I am seeing as "full retail"?

2. If I decide that just I want to move to AT&T (we just moved and VZW sucks in our house now), what happens to her? Is she stuck on a solo share everything?

#1 Why not just buy the phone out right and then sell the 4S would most likely come out costing less.

#2 Yes

I plan to sell the 4S. I have a gazelle offer for $350 which seemed reasonable. My point is, why wouldn't I save an extra hundred bucks by opening and closing a line? I'm trying to figure out if I am missing something obvious.

For some reason the 649/749/849 pricing rubs me the wrong way! I was on AT&T for years and was used to the early upgrade pricing!

Yes, you will retain unlimited 4G as long as you do NOT get a subsidized phone through Verizon.

Can I do this???

My mom has Verizon as well with no plan of updating her phone anytime soon. We are on separate plans, don't live together.

She offered to order the phone for me, but is that allowed? Would I be allowed to activate it if she did that?

Did you call Verizon too? I'm in the same situation as you, but with two lines I want to upgrade. Not a huge deal to have to wait, but if I don't have to, I won't.
