I've read the details. However I'm going with the notion I can't take their word. Maybe you can take them up on it. I just have a feeling they are going to do it across the board to all unlimited data users claiming "network congestion". Do I want that to happen? No way! Verizon is the best in my area, but I have to face facts this is a money maker move on their part. Using this excuse to move you off the unlimited data plan.

Doubt it. Verizon doesn't want to waive their ETF fees if you used a subsidy upgrade.

They lose nothing if you are out of contract.

This actually made me LOL. Once you are throttled you will want to throw your device against a wall. AT&T throttles at 0.50mbps.

You can still browse on mobile phones easily with 500kpbs being throttled.

Videos obviously are an issue being throttled. But web browsing isn't an issue with being throttled.

Agreed 110%!

Main reason why I left AT&T

Wish I could. I have tried T-Mobile more than anyone else has. Each time I try them its the same story. Service is good/decent until I go into buildings. When traveling my unlocked 5S bounced back and fourth from LTE to E to 4G and then no service. I wish I could use them, but they are not yet reliable. Its a shame too, because they have every tower in my area upgraded to LTE. The signal just doesn't go far.

I don't see it being a problem since I upgrade every 1-2 years with my line using the 'transfer upgrade' to my other two lines.

In order to see reduced speeds, you have to be a customer that meets all of the criteria below (again, ALL of the criteria):

-Top 5% of data users (you use 4.7GB of data per month or more)
-Enrolled on an unlimited data plan or feature
-Have fulfilled their minimum contract term
-Are attempting to use data on a cell site that is experiencing high demand

This might be an issue for those with one line, which is harder to maintain a contract term. There are workarounds though (upgrading and purchasing via BestBuy.com method)!

-->So just make sure you upgrade every 2 years with the BB method and you won't see any throttling!

Yea I was confused by this. So basically if you upgrade through a loophole (2 year contract) you won't have to worry about this throttling nonsense?

Let's see...overages, hidden fees, extremely high prices, slow LTE network, ridiculous policies, such as this. Now they throttle, and do not allow subsidies for retaining unlimited. AT&T seems lesser of the two evils.
For the most part the same things apply to AT&T as well for a lot of people. Basically people have different experiences with different carriers, but there isn't one that's really better than the other for everyone. Between AT&T and Verizon they are fairly comparable for most things.

Yeah I agree with you and their service, but for the minutes my family uses, it makes sense for me to have a family plan with T-Mobile.

I still have my Verizon personal line w/grandfathered unlimited and won't leave it anytime soon!

Yes, don't worry about this 'news' as long as you are under contract.

That's strange, I don't think Verizon intends for people to be able to keep unlimited data when they do a subsidized upgrade.

I'll go ahead and email Verizon corporate about this loophole so they can shut it down if it's against their terms of service.

I disagree. I used to have an old 5GB soft cap data plan on T-Mobile and once inadvertently left my hotspot on one night and burned out the whole monthly allowance just a week into my billing cycle. Throttled speeds were so frustratingly slow that I just got sick of trying to even do anything (web browsing, pandora, iTunes match, etc.) unless I was on Wifi. Your phone is effectively data disabled when you're being throttled. Email was the only thing I found still usable.

Now you can. When AT&T first started the throttling, it was NOT 500kbps. They've since become a little more relaxed on the throttled speeds.

I wanna say it was around 50kbps or something near that.

Yeah well AT&T isn't Verizon. I have several other 3G devices that usually get 3.5MB down that are "throttled" and now get around 1.2MB down.

Verizon will start throttling unlimited LTE plans Oct 1st

Yea they've known about it for quite awhile. I even talked to their customer service and they walk me through it when I was upgrading to the 5s.

So you go ahead and do that lol.

T-Mobile throttles to edge speeds.

ATT throttles lte data down to 500 kpbs which is obviously faster than edge speeds.

Edge speeds generally ran between 56kpbs to 200 kpbs. Like you said. Barely usable on mobile web browsing.

500kpbs throttle is actually ok for web browsing on mobile. Heck. Verizon 3g cdma speeds usually run 500kpbs to 1mpbs on most days. So ATT throttled is like Verizon 3g

Couldn't the "minimum contract term" be the first 2 year contract a customer signed up for ?

What's against their terms of service? Lol please explain.

I'm 99.9% sure Verizon knows about this but they obviously don't care about this loophole since it's been around for many years.

You mad because you don't have it?

Be jealous.

No. Each time you upgrade, its a contract (usually 2 years) and what your contract is entitled to is unlimited data with no 4G LTE throttling. If you're on a month-to-month, theres no entitlement and they can throttle you.

I know how contracts go I was referring more to the term "minimum". It could mean being in contract or one could say it means the original two yr contract signed

So, why exactly is VZW the worst carrier in the U.S. then?

Verizon is the biggest reason that we don't have net neutrality in this country. They REALLY are the worst carrier. Evil. They sued the FTC because the FTC was trying to stop Verizon's habit of slowing down websites that don't pay their extortion.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-01-14/verizon-wins-net-neutrality-court-ruling-against-fcc.html

And now Verizon is forcing Netflix to pay a ton of money just to make sure Netflix isn't slow for Verizon customers (paying Verizon to do their damned job, which most ISP's don't extort for). And worst of all, Verizon is STILL slowing down Netflix on purpose. If you use a proxy (reroute the data through a different provider basically) then the speed is just fine.

Verizon really is evil. A bunch of useless money-grubbing corporate whores. Soon, if you have Verizon Internet, you will open up your Verizon tablet to go on to the "verizon-net", which will be a list of 20 pre-approved "websites" from other big corporations that can afford to pay Verizon's extortion. Its all for pure profits, and they are willing to destroy the fundamental principles of the greatest innovation in human history to make a quick buck.

Verizon as a company is one thing, Verizon as a wirless service is somewhat different.

I can't see how you can be mad a cellular company for its parent company dealing with the FCC, i.e., VZW is a wholly owned subsidiary of Verizon Communication

That is the typical verizon 3G CDMA speed. I have both verizon and att so know a lot.

Fastest I ever hit with verizon 3G CDMA was around 2.2 mpbs. That's under maximum ideal conditions (aka 4am when hardly anyone is Awake).

But I usually averaged between 500-1mpbs. Which was "good enough" for mobile browsing. Plus verizon 3G CDMA Ping times were faster than att 3G so that made Verizon seem faster on mobile. But here is link that also backs up verizon 3G speeds.

Depends on the area. Doing Speed test from the same room as my above test.

iPhone 4S on Verizon as show above,
90 .40 down

iPhone 4S on Verizon tested again for best.
130ms 1.1 down

Xoom on Verizon LTE OFF
160ms, .95 down

Xoom on Verizon LTE ON
195ms, 4.9 down

S3 on ATT LTE OFF
130ms, 5.9 down

S3 on ATT LTE ON
155ms, 28.2 down

So for my area ATT is clearly better. Where I'm sitting ATT's 3G HSPA+ is faster then Verizons LTE. If I keep testing them all I get fluctuations those are just some of the best results I got. I didn't want to keep testing the S3 because its a friends and he's on a tiered data plan and speedtest sucks up some data when it gets that high.
