Well, I disagree..
I checked out the 13 MB and the 13 MBP at best buy, and the screens are not very bright to my eyes...

Now, I read the same reviews as you guys, so I was VERY surprised and disappointed when what I saw with my eyes didn't match what the reviews and posters said...
I am no hater, I want this to be good so I can get one.

Could it be that the demo machines I am looking at have different panels than the ones you guys/reviewers have?

It can be a possibility. One other thing that can affect it is the "auto dimming". Just putting your hand near the it's isight (webcam) will dim it considerably. So there are many factors but I can tell you that the screen on my 13" MBP is hella bright.

I have a 13" with 9CBD and I never have it at full brightness, because its just too damn bright. I typically leave it at between 2 and 6 bars under max depending on how bright the room is.

Yes thats correct, a much much much much better screen. The screen in the 13" MBP isnt even a MBP screen, its still the rubbish screen they used when it was still a Macbook, which it actually is.

lol... people like you always make me laugh.

You are really taking this whole 13" MacBook Pro thing personally? I hope your posting online about how the '13" MacBook Pro is really only a MacBook and nothing more' really helps you sleep at night.

Hi all,

So the new MBP 13 came out, and a really attractive price to boot.
so I got the big idea to sell my asus eee 1000 PC and trade up to a macbook pro 13incher for my "away from my desktop mac pro" computing needs.
Why not treat myself right? Sell the eee add in a few hundred (and then a few hundred more) and I'm in.

So, FYI, I like a BRIGHT laptop...never use anything other than max brightness setting...
I go to best buy today and take a look at them. All the newest models were lined up for me to compare, and I have to be honest, the screens were not that great...
I'm not talking about glossy/glassy whatever, I mean overall brightness was very poor.

White MacBook: Screen is dim, colors washed out and has bad viewing angles. Too bad cuz the price and specs are NICE!.. ok I can upgrade a little more...

13' NEW MBP: Screen is kind of dim, but great color depth and better viewing angles. CRAP! Why is it so dim?

Macbook Air: This screen looked to be the best of the bunch, A little brighter, and good color.. But I'm not shelling out another 500.00

So What gives? I mean I checked the brightness settings in OSX, I tilted, twirled and contored in all sorts of ways, but no matter what I did, I did not like the screens on these guys. I felt the same way when I looked at the older models in the apple store a few months ago..
And why does the MBA screen look better than the other models?

I think the screen on my asus eeepc is actually brighter than these laptops..
Am I crazy??
Frustrated....
-Mike

MBP 13" = Same exact screen as MBA?

Did you crank the brightness up to max before determining the 13" are too dim?

I was a little concerned about my 15" until I found the brightness control... I can't have it at max brightness inside, it is too bright...

So i visited the bestbuy today and looked again at the 13 inch macbookpro screen, and I have to admit....
it is starting to look a little better and not as dim to my eyes the more I stare at it...
I think I'm drinking the koolaid!
Or I'm being blinded by new gadget hotness...

I still dunno...I admit color depth and richness are fantastic!! I just want my laptop to be a bright as my desktop monitor.. is that too much to ask?? (i guess maybe it is..)

One things for sure.. that white macbook screen is crap compared to the 13in pro..

p.s. And yes I cranked the brightness way up... and turned off autodimming in the menu, and tried it in different viewing positions, and contorted myself into a pretzel.....even messed with the calibration, but that just changed the colors, not brightness..

I'm pretty sure the 13 inch and 15 inch don't have the same screen which is why I would always get the 15 inch PowerBook (showing my age there) rather than the iBook or MacBook. I think Apple is following the same philosophy here. The 13 inch MacBook Pro is labeled Pro primarily because of the unibody frame.

Also, regarding the brightness, that may have had something to do with the ambient light sensor. Put it in really bright light and see what it look like then (aim it at the ceiling in the Apple store).

A 15" will solve all your problems. The 13" screen still isn't up to par IMO (and has a way too thick bezel). The 15" has a much brighter display than even the MBA.

The white MB screen is absolutely horrific compared to any of the other new notebooks, and in general for that matter. I thought they've always sucked.

How come everyone is complaining about a ~0.5" bezel???? It's not that thick people!

Yes thats correct, a much much much much better screen. The screen in the 13" MBP isnt even a MBP screen, its still the rubbish screen they used when it was still a Macbook, which it actually is.

Define the term you just pulled out of your rear end "MBP screen". Does it have a certain maker, model, size? My friend's 13" MBP screen is way brighter, better viewing angles, and has a wider color gamut than my white MacBook.

Oh and to OP, maybe it's a lighting problem as addressed by the post above mine. Go to System Prefs, Displays, and uncheck the "automatically adjust brightness as ambient lighting changes" box. Then crank up the brightness using the F1 and F2 keys.

The panels in the newest MBP 13inch are very bright and have better viewing angles than their previous MB cousins. Calling it a crap screen is a really an insult and perhaps the lighting situation at the store didn't really help, seeing as there are tons of lights that are way brighter than the screen itself.

Most store demo units (Macs) have been imaged with a common OS X install, which could well be different than what you get out of the box... keep that in mind, because this was an issue with other Mac laptops in the Apple stores earlier. Dim screens on the display models, bright displays out of the box with original factory installed OS X.

But in the end, if you don't like it - don't buy it. That's the best policy.

Yes thats correct, a much much much much better screen. The screen in the 13" MBP isnt even a MBP screen, its still the rubbish screen they used when it was still a Macbook, which it actually is.

You do realize that they upgraded the screen from the October 08 Unibody? You make it sound like it's the same screen. It's not. I owned one, and now I own a 13"MBP. The difference is night and day. You might want to reconsider your blanket statement if you haven't compared the two, as it makes you look like you don't know what you're talking about. Actually, you don't know what you're talking about. Nuff said.

I hope you're joking??? I just got a 13.3 MBP and the screen is very bright with great depth of color. I actually have to turn the screen down in most cases.

Mine is the same way to so many there is some really bad quality control or something. I keep seeing threads like these but mine looks great and I have to tone it down as well.

That's odd. Practically every online review of the new 13" MBP screen disagrees with your statement.

aristobrat is correct regarding 13.3 reviews. Here are some quotes I found regarding the 13.3's new back-lit led screen. I could not find any review that referred to the 13.3 screen as inferior to the 15 or 17 screen. I had mine next to my friends last gen model and my screen was noticeably better in brightness and color. If the screen is not bright enough for you then it's your opinion and not due to an 'inferior' screen.

notebookreview.com
"Pictures and movies look great thanks to the glossy surface and a healthy 60% bump in color gamut over the previous generation MacBook, which gives vibrant colors and deep blacks. Overall brightness is excellent for viewing in brightly lit rooms like in an office building or lecture hall."

cnet had this to say
"According to Apple, the new display offers a wider color gamut, and the screen certainly looks bright and colorful"

Gizmodo.com
"Then we have the improved LED-backlit display, which has a 60% greater color gamut than previous version. What this means to you is that even the 13-inch MacBook Pro will have a quality display even though it's a few hundred dollars cheaper than the 15-inch. The previous 13-inch MacBook, as you saw in our review, had a screen that was obviously inferior to the Pros, and distorted very noticeably as you stepped away or viewed the screen at an angle. Not anymore."

I'm pretty sure the 13 inch and 15 inch don't have the same screen which is why I would always get the 15 inch PowerBook (showing my age there) rather than the iBook or MacBook. I think Apple is following the same philosophy here. The 13 inch MacBook Pro is labeled Pro primarily because of the unibody frame.

you are mistaken with your comment. 1st, the 13" and the 15" screen is comparable. no they are not the same as they are different size therefore a different model. BUT, they are equally great in terms or color & brightness.
I have set the new models side by side to do a comparison and they are both the same caliber.

as for the 13" being branded Pro "only" because of the unibody structure is also not true.

they added many of the pro features to this model including SCREEN, battery length, and the card slot (which would have been an express slot if they had not changed it) also, the 13" is capable of expanding to 8gb RAM just like the 15" &17"

my point is that the pro name on this 13" machine means alot more than it just being an aluminum body. if this was true, they would have called the last 13" unibody macbook a pro.

To the OP - are you sure what you saw is the NEW 13" uMBP? Best Buy can be backwards... I saw old models for weeks after the news ones were out, so it wouldn't surprise me if you saw an original 13" uMB.

I've got a white MB, an uMBP13", a santa-rosa 15" MBP, a MBP17" hi-res and 2 blackbooks. Of all these screens, the new MBP 13" is the best without even the slightest doubt. the MBP 17" is a matte and has a super screen, but even compared to that, the new uMBP13" is really, really bright. It's just that it is glossy. I've got the 9CBD and comparing it to the white or blackbooks, this is a leap forward.
Compared to a uMB in the shop, the difference wasn't that bad.
I've seen now a lot of different screens, at the shop they had three different makes, I liked this one the best, but to be honest? If I hadn't compared them next to each other, I couldn't have seen the difference.

damn dude, you need to start using ebay.... :)

JK, i'm sure you have use for all of your laptops...

I wish matte screen was an option on the whole pro range. The 17inch is just too big too carry around if you have a camera and other kit.

The newer glossy MBP's are nice for general purpose use but a pain for any photography/graphics/color work.

I think matte will become a future option on all 'pro's. Just like Apple brought back firewire, after alienating the people that bought into that format. A pro laptop should offer a pro screen.

Just my two cents.

Yes thats correct, {the air has} a much much much much better screen. The screen in the 13" MBP isnt even a MBP screen, its still the rubbish screen they used when it was still a Macbook, which it actually is.

Now the question is, is the B133EW03 V.1 compatible with the B133EW04 in the new Macbook 13.3" unibody?

Also, quality is NOT brightness.

I find myself turning the brightness down on almost every laptop I use, because the owner has it turned up all the way, and it kills my eyes like that. I don't know how the hell people use laptops with the brightness all the way up.

I liken it to a concert, being in the front row without earplugs. You get used to the 120 dB after a while, but you're still going deaf.

I guess it's personal preference. In my opinion, my screen is really bright, to the point were I never bring it all the way up.

The new macbook pro 13" screen is still not as bright as the 15". Notebook check reported it as 200 nits, which apparently is a worst-case scenario. (There are many different panels, but the one they got was only 200 nits). I am not sure if there are some screens that are 300 nits, but the macbook air and the macbook pro 15" screens are all 300 nits.

They're still going to cut corners in the cheapest model if you ask me. I went to the store and the 13" mbp jr's are definitely dimmer than the macbook air and the macbook pro. This only matters if you're in like a coffee shop near the window, but more importantly, when you're watching videos. 200 nits is just not bright enough, really. My point is to say that the OP's perception (as well as mine) that the mbp 13" screen is perceptibly dimmer, is verifiable. Viewing angles, color, are awesome, though.
