So let me get this straight, the iPhone X I waited in line for on launch day is actually inferior to the one they are starting to sell now that is unlocked?

Can't I have my AT&T phone be unlocked so I can port it to other carriers or use it on trips with foreign SIMs if I wish to?

I find this completely unacceptable for a company that prides itself with consumer friendliness, to start selling an upgrade a month later and make folks like me regret their $1200 purchase.

I will see if they accept a return of my carrier locked phone. If not, they've lost a loyal customer.

But here’s the thing:

1. No one asked you to line up
2. If you are a loyal customer you would know the history of Apple- which is the sim free version comes a few months later
3. You can get your ATT unlocked once it’s paid off- so I don’t see the big issue?
4. The unlocked X and locked X are exactly the same performance wise...so it’s not technically inferior...if anything you should be mad at ATT for not unlocking it...

Just my thoughts.

This isn’t Apple. If you purchased your AT&T iPhone at full price, you can have it unlocked for free. If you are on a payment plan, AT&T will keep it locked until it’s paid off.

What’s the big? This isn’t new. They always delay release of the unlocked iPhones by a month or two.

If you’re a loyal customer, you’d know that.

If getting an unlocked iPhone was that important to you, you should have found out if you didn’t know. There were multiple threads on the subject here and elsewhere, long before launch day.

Number 4 is wrong. The sim free qualcomm has been proven better than the intel ATT.
[doublepost=1512547498][/doublepost]The fanboys in here (by here I mean this forum) are ridiculous. Apple should not be putting out 2 versions - Qualcomm and Intel. Qualcomm is better, Macrumors even posted it as well. Its straight up stupid that Apple does it.

So yeah Id be mad if I was the OP. 1200 is a lot of money and when buying an unlocked phone, you should be getting the EXACT same one as the sim free. Shame on Apple.

Thanks for that- but in everyday usage, will customers tell the difference? I understand that psychologically you might feel upset but this isn’t the first time Apple Did this, it happened with the 7 plus as well...

Actually the one you bought on launch day is inferior to the other model they sold on launch day, the Verizon model.

But to be fair, there are tests showing the Intel model being better as well, and there is pretty much no usable difference.

Answer is.. in daily usage.. you will not notice the difference. This is for the extremer's that want to play the "mines better then yours" card. When you are out doing basic every day things on your phone you cannot tell me you notice any difference what so ever in speed/performance. It is a mindset set for sure! This is one thing I've learned after going to several conferences and keynotes.

They are not selling an "upgraded" version that is different from what they sold a month ago. It is the Verizon/Sprint version that is just available without a carrier. If you had bought a Verizon version on day 1, it is the same exact phone.

The AT&T version only supports the GSM network, while the Verizon version supports both GSM and CDMA. CDMA is only used on the US and only by Verizon and Sprint. Whether the modems are slightly different/faster is irrelevant in daily usage.

It's been happening for years now. LOL.

Everyone knows AT&T and T-Mob are GSM only and VZW and Sprint are GSM/CDMA. So, when you sell an unlocked phone, it makes sense to go with the one that can be used with all the US carriers, which is the GSM/CDMA model.

To the average user, in day-to-day use, on the AT&T or Tmo networks, there isn't really a noticeable difference.

I don't ever get the big hoopla.

That said, I may swap mine out because I already had to swap my launch one due to a speaker issue and I am still in my 14-day window to return it... I pay full price, so there's never any sort of carrier crap to deal with with returns.

I had a SIM-free 6s Plus (Qualcomm modem) prior to upgrading to the X. From what I've experienced in the past month of using the X (T-Mobile variant, used on AT&T), my data speeds have been slightly higher than the ones on the 6s Plus, despite the fact that T-Mobile/AT&T variant of the X has the "slower" Intel modem, while the signal strength has been about the same. Of course, YMMV.

THIS.
Yet again another thread complaining about Apple when in reality its the OP's problem/fault NOT Apple's.
Been saying it on every post in this forum but you guys all really just look for reasons to complain. Its annoying.

Sounds like you purchased full-price, which means it is unlocked.

I had planned on waiting for the SIM-free model but decided it didn't really matter to me. My full-price AT&T iPhone X is unlocked.

What's inferior about it? Please give examples that the newer iPhone X is superior.

Apple does this all the time [releases sim free models a month later], so its not really surprising

Edit: added clarification to my point

Outside of the fact that 99.999% of the population wouldn't benefit from one model over the other, they do this every year so you should have known and waited if you wanted the other model.

This is nothing new. And as others have pointed out as long as you paid full price your phone is unlocked and can be used with foreign SIMs. You just won’t be able to activate it with Verizon or Sprint because it lacks a CDMA radio, but that was also the case with the iPhone 7. In fact only the 6 and 6s were “universal” models in the US (except for Sprint, which had its own model).

Apple has always waited a month before releasing the SIM-free model ever since they started offering it with the iPhone 5s.

OP should've just skipped the iPhone X like they said they would. 🙄

What's the big deal? My Apple store didn't have any Tmo 256GB models, luckily, a Verizon or ATT (paid in full) would take care of it. So?

So you're comparing a Qualcomm chip from 2015 to an intel chip from 2017.... You don't think Qualcomm upgrades their chips? or do you think they've been using the same chips since the first iPhone in 2007 lol.

Useless thread. Apple have been doing this for years so what is your rant about? Inferior phone because of the modem differences? LMAO what a joke. Obsessing over minor differences between the two when you can't even tell in normal usage is a waste of time. Some test have proven that Intel performs better in TMO and AT&T network, but none of that matters. Eventually Apple would love to stay away from Qualcomm once Intel is able to meet both requirements.

If you paid full price for your AT&T iPhone X, it should be unlocked. Otherwise, you may have to call AT&T to unlock it, and they should since it is not being financed (if you paid full price) - they may require you to sync to iTunes and update firmware (iOS).

AT&T will not sell a phone outright. They require a purchase via Next and you can pay in full with the first billing date. As a result it is locked. You have to ask AT&T to unlock after the phone is free and clear.
Went through this with a 6S+, 7, 7+, and IPP.
Bought an SE unlocked from the Apple Store.

Just the way they (AT&T) do business.

These posts are exactly correct. There was a huge brouhaha about this exact issue this time last year with the iPhone 7. I don't remember clearly, but it's probably been an issue for quite a few years running.
