I still have my original firewire iPod. 20gb i think. It still works. I will sell if for 3k. Now that is a bargain :)

The thing is... whatever moron buys this is never going to open it (I'd hope) thinking they can sell it again down the road for even more money. It's easy to re-shrinkwrap stuff. I have an iPod box from 2004 that I could put some rocks in it, rewrap it, and list it as new unopened in original packaging. There's a sucker born every minute.

Opening this up would be a huge mistake. It is not going to one pretty inside. My original iPod (which has been used) is bulging and separating at the seam due to battery swelling.

How many times over the years will this thing get sold on until, one day, someone decides to open it and finds an empty box?

The first important thing to keep in mind here is that what a seller lists for is completely irrelevant. He could have listed for a million, doesn't mean any one will pay.

The second thing is that eBay is absolutely full of scam buyers and scam sellers and that this is likely an iPod that was very carefully packed back into a box and then shrink wrapped. If you disputed this fact you would likely encounter the kangaroo court that is paypal, who is unlikely to side with you because it would be difficult to prove otherwise.

So yeah, likely a pointless listing either way.

I guess it's true for some people, but I never thought my whole music library was 1,000 songs.

I own over 18,000 songs now...I wonder how many I had in 2001?

One reportedly sold for $20K on eBay in 2014.

I have one of these, NOT SEALED, but in good condition with the original box, cables, power adapter and headphones. AND IT STILL WORKS!! :)

actually it would be pretty easy to examine for signs of wear and tear, and hard drive usage. the original iPods were prone to scuff marks amongst other things. and no way would it have had any significant use and not have an electronic signature on the hard dive.

but yep, there are scammers on eBay.

What an iconic piece of tech. Is it possible to have the battery preserved if the package was kept in nice weather conditions?

Assuming good battery design and manufacture (and lets assume with millions sold without one blowing up in the box that the iPod qualifies), then battery swelling is a chemical reaction that is most often sparked (pun intended) typically by deep discharging and subsequent over charging. This is made worse by high ambient heat.

So its not likely this battery is swelling. Yours is old and has presumably seen a lot of use. Apples and oranges.

And how can we be sure it's real?

99% of the "sealed" rare items from Apple on eBay are resealed, and most of them are restored to a brand new condition.

"And over here, an original iPod in sealed box" (whoas from guests, perfunctory mostly, as they are tired of this stupid museum tour in the this wierd guys house, but they are pretty stoned). "Over here, a signed Fender guitar by......."

Not much of a reaction from the crowd. They had no idea that history was just changed... the iPod brought the iPhone, and the iPhone brought everything we have today, including social media.

One thing Steve was wrong about, is the Mac being the center of everything. He was Mac's biggest fan, and there's no one at Apple in that corner anymore, sadly. Personally, my Mac is the center of everything, but I'm in the minority.
You missed Steve's iCloud presentation.

I actually have one of those that still mostly works. About 5 years of skiing with it eventually caused it to be unable to communicate with a computer, although it does still charge (such as it is, with a battery that old). The original drive also died, so I cracked it open and replaced the original drive with one from a slightly newer iPod that I pre-loaded with all the music I wanted. Surprisingly this actually worked and my original iPod now sits on a shelf in the garage attached to a set of powered-speakers so I can easily play music while working on the cars etc. Can't believe the thing still functions in any way considering the abuse I gave it. Love the tactile feel of the physical scroll-wheel, brilliant.

I'll happily sell it, however, for the low-low price of $4995.00. A real deal on today's market!

The iPhone brought social media? Facebook was far from the first social network but even it was pretty widespread by 2007.
