From what I've read I believe you can use it on Metro PCS pretty easily, but you won't be able to get data to work.
so if i want to use other carrier it's illegal? So there's nothing for me to do with this iphone?
I believe that Abs_p is incorrect. I don't think it's illegal. Like I said, I don't think they're locked to begin with. I think that you just have to convince the carrier to activate it. It may need to be flashed though. You could probably look it up online.

If an unlock does become available for the Verizon iPhone, will Sprint embrace the CDMA iPhone? Some say it will happen, some say it won't. Except there's only one problem ... the CDMA / Verizon iPhone 4 isn't locked in the first place. Why? Because CDMA phones aren't locked.
Well what he meant was basically an unlock coz he wanted to use it on another network.. In layman terms unlock is the right word .ain't it![]()
Take it easy guys....your gonna scare the OP. The process for flashing an iphone to Metro PCS is NOT illegal, nor is it as nefarious as everyone here is making it out to be. First thing you need to do, is get your ESN added to the Metro database. This can be done, by contacting one of the dealers who advertise this service on Howard Forums. Then, just dial *22804 from your iPhone, and say "Roaming List" at the prompt. Once your roaming list is updated, hang up and dial *228 from the iPhone, and say "change my phone" at the prompt....follow the directions and wait for the OTA to complete. VOILA!!! iPhone on Metro....no data as of yet, so your iphone is more like and iPod touch with talk and text capabilities...have fun.
so it's illegal?

Interesting.
The question is would you be able to do it even if the IMEI is blacklisted by Verizon?
And what would happen if you try to restore or upgrade the firmware? Would it lock up and you would need to hactivate it to get it to work again?
That's actually a very good question. And furthermore, would it be possible to do the same process to flash it on to Canadian carriers? As in Telus or Bell who still have a very small amount of CDMA dumbphones. It would be interesting to see, considering these carriers provide the GSM iPhone line.
True, but I think the hardest part would be for those carriers to agree to add the ESN number into their database.
Metro is pretty much GhettoPcs here so they allow any CDMA phone from Verizon and sprint to be put on their network. Even ones blacklisted for lost, stolen or bad unpaid accounts.
Other carriers are not so willing to add other devices not approved or sold by them on their network.
