Having owned iPhones continually since the 3GS iteration, I am most likely to upgrade to the Google Pixel 2 XL mainly due to the fact that Apple is continually playing catch up with new technologies. Wireless charging and an OLED screen have been done years ago. Apple, unfortunately, hasn't truly innovovated since Jobs died.

That is true.

But the year the iPhone finally gets wireless charging and OLED screens... now you decide to leave? :p

6 Plus here.

Between the anticipated initial production shortfall (backorders) and how I usually shy away from first-gen devices (6 Plus was exception out of need), I'll probably be in this category. Between the delay, likely kinks to work out and, likely inclusion of the additional T-Mo frequencies that will not be in 8 or X, I'm leaning towards waiting.

Between the smart speaker, X v2.0 (whatever it'll be called) and I'm speculating an iPad powerful enough to replace my Mac, it's going to be an expensive 2018 for me.
Same. I've on a launch day 6 and I plan to upgrade only if they release iPhone SE-X? I'll buy that. If not then Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact will be my next phone. Also my wife's 3rd gen iPad is starting to feel old. I'm hoping the iPad mini 5 gets released too. I'll buy that.

I respect your obvious knowledge on this topic. However, it is indeed possible for a new sensor to capture a wider color gamut even if the recorded bit depth is not increased. While I can agree that the result would be substandard, it would not be "relative to sRGB" as literally as you are stating. The consequence of expanding the color gamut without increasing the bit depth — from say 8- to 10-bit per pixel — would only be banding, not gamut reduction a la sRGB vs P3. Let's hope the mentioned 10-bit dithering can help with the transition.

FYI to all, "Deeper Pixels" appears to be "Deeper Deep Trench Isolation," and NOT 10-bit (& deeper) color (depth), as I had hoped for.

Note the "appears to be," as this has NOT yet been verified ... other sites have reported it.

Normally, when ANY camera manufacturer decides to go WIDER color (gamut / space), they also go DEEPER color (depth) ... but Apple did NOT do that last year, when they introduced their first Wide Color iPad in March, or the iPhone 7 family in September.

What this means is that when YOU capture content in Apple's Display P3 / Wide Color (color) space, the accuracy of the color capture is reduced, relative to sRGB !

This occurs with any extended color space, when the number of bits per color is kept at only 8 bits.

The ONLY WAY Apple can fix this is to capture in 10 bits ... with the preferred Pixel Format Type being BGR10A2, which they may or may NOT have implemented ... NO ONE (outside of Apple) knows for sure ... it requires experimentation.

If Apple didn't, then the iPhone 8s, 8s+ and Xs "could be" the better devices to get ! ... of course, there is NO guarantee those get the needed Fix either.

As I stated, this is something that was Reported on other sites, and NOT YET independently verified ... but, there were ONLY two possibilities.

I suspect 10-bit color capture is in-deed supported on at least some Apple devices, AND that is simply hasn't yet been discovered by anyone ... High Sierra, released just yesterday, supports 10-bit color HEVC encoding AND Apple talked about Intelligent 10-bit dithering at WWDC in June, so something is in-deed up wrt this whole topic.

Should have never even bothered with the 8. Old design. They should have stuck with the X design, 3 storage variants, 3 colors (no rose gold, ugly color, maybe code red or something bold for once like a nice blue), with a starting price of $799.

More people inclined to upgrade, more profit vs. price scaring people away and less profit (I am probably wrong but jesus h. christ they could have done a much better job listening to macrumor people vs. greedy investors).

I have to assume it's too difficult to manufacture at the moment, but maybe next year it won't be difficult to manufacture.;)
He said TouchID under the display was Plan B if FaceID didn’t work out. Apple engineers confirmed they stopped trying out TouchID under the display once FaceID worked perfevtly.

Yeah, it would be weird for Apple to reintroduce TouchID in the screen one year after saying how much more secure FaceID is over TouchID and how it's the future of unlocking (in addition to Craig's comments).

These videos are well produced but they don’t say much that isn’t covered in the keynote or Apple’s Store pages.

I’d like to see some real-use performance comparisons (not benchmarks). And showing pictures from the 8’s camera doesn’t help inform a decision on upgrading without also showing the same shots taken from iPhone 7.

Edit: I found at least one performance video on YouTube that shows them to be very similar.

too many models to choose from and the gen public become befuddled and just don't buy anything

reminds me of the centris days

the product line needs pruning not complicating

I'd say given most upgraders will be coming from 6 and 6s, it would be good to do a direct comparison between those models too?
Yup, went from 6 to 8+ and loving it. HUGE improvement on camera and speed plus I use wireless charging on my nightstand.

Of which other phone manufacturers have had for years. Thats is not innovation.

But you can finally get these features on the iPhone. That should be good news.

You obviously like iOS since you've used it since the iPhone 3GS. But you noticed that other phones have wireless charging and OLED screens. Fine.

Well now you can get the iOS you like.... and wireless charging and OLED screens. You should be happy... not retreating. This is what you wanted, right?

This scenario has always been funny to me:

"The iPhone is missing features that other phones have had for years."

- Apple adds the features

"OMG Apple is sooooo late! No innovation! Sad!"

Jeez Louise :p

Still not enough for me to not want to jump ship. Im still considering Apple, although not likely.Pixel 2 XL should do me fine. Im on an iphone 6 plus thats three years old, the lightning port has been giving me issues for over a year and that IS enough for me to want to switch.

The 8 and 8+ are really a 7s and 7s+... Not sure why they didn't just do it that way to avoid confusion.
Perhaps it's a sign that the "S" naming convention is over. It was always confusing what the "S" stood for, anyway, so if the point is to avoid confusion that seems the way to go.

Granted, releasing "8" and "X" in the same year wasn't a good way to reduce confusion.
