The 8 and 8+ are really a 7s and 7s+... Not sure why they didn't just do it that way to avoid confusion.

Because then they would've had to skip two numbers to get to X and they really wanted to call the 2017 phone "ten" because it's the 10th anniversary of the iPhone (and since Windows skipped 9, skipping 9 seems to be acceptable).

From now on they're probably just going to have X2, X3, X4, etc. and never reach 11 just like with macOS :D

Waiting for next years X in hopes Apple finally figures out how to integrate TouchID into the screen and gets rid of the ugly notch.

The ugly notch has a simple solution - a solid black bar at the top can/could have taken care of it. They can still use the area for system & signal info, just make it pitch black background, as we saw in various concepts before the X was announced.

I am waiting for next years X hoping for Apple to lower their prices. :)

Coming from a 6S, I was on the fence about my new 8. Was seriously considering returning it as I wasn’t blown away by any features in particular. But over the last few days the cumulative improvements like wireless charging and better speakers nudged me toward keeping it. But I’ll quickly jump to the 2018 X if the 2017 X turns out to be an amazing device.

I jumped to a 7 from a 6S, just got the storage bump i needed. My biggest difference is battery life, and my 6S was replaced recently , it was terrible , the 7 is great

Still not enough for me to not want to jump ship. Im still considering Apple, although not likely. Pixel 2 XL should do me fine. Im on an iphone 6 plus thats three years old, the lightning port has been giving me issues for over a year and that IS enough for me to want to switch.

You've used iPhones for 7 years that didn't have those features.

But now that Apple finally made them available... you jump ship.

To each his own.

It should be noted that the first Google Pixel did not have wireless charging or waterproofing... so I'll be curious to know if the Pixel 2 has them this time.

Also... rumors are indicating that there is no dual-camera system and no headphone jack.

But innovation, right? ;)

Failure to innovate.

Of which other phone manufacturers have had for years. Thats is not innovation.

Number one, I think it's important to realize that the term innovation is overly used and not always properly used in context with everything that's technological related. Also, Take in to consideration, Apple is not the first with most features on the market that other competitors already have. But when Apple does release features already available, they're usually more refined With more unique features or refinements that separate it away from the other competitors. That's what makes Apple special in what they do. They're never the first, but they would Rather be the best. In My opinion, it's not about being the first, it's about making something or incorporating a feature that offers an experience better to the customer.

My iPhone 5S was long in the tooth and the 8 is great upgrade for me. Still a happy Apple user.

But you can finally get these features on the iPhone. That should be good news.

You obviously like iOS since you've used it since the iPhone 3GS. But you noticed that other phones have wireless charging and OLED screens. Fine.

Well now you can get the iOS you like.... and wireless charging and OLED screens. You should be happy... not retreating. This is what you wanted, right?

This scenario has always been funny to me:

"The iPhone is missing features that other phones have had for years."

- Apple adds the features

"OMG Apple is sooooo late! No innovation! Sad!"

Jeez Louise :p

This scenario is one that has been repeated time and time again. It's not new with me, fanboy.

Bought my wife an iPhone 7 in January. It's alright, but we are on the third lightning cable. LOL it's laughable.

I still have a Nexus S from 2011 that we still use. It's original micro usb cable still works perfectly fine today

If you could tell me of one innovation that Apple has come out with on the iphone in the past 5 years, i'd be impressed.

I think you're confusing the terms "innovation" and "invention"

You do not "come out with" innovation... it's a progression.

Adding features... refining features... these are things that Apple does.

But just when Apple makes its biggest update yet... adding the features you say you want... you're leaving. Enjoy.

It's not new with me, fanboy.

Well that took a turn for the worst. Thanks.

I'm ambivalent about the Notch and think it's a risk for the first generation. Also I need a new phone now as one of my kids needs to inherit my iPhone 7, so for the moment I've ordered a 256GB iP8.

Sure it's the safe, boring approach, but after seeing the iP8 in the shop I did think the glass back made a hell of a difference to the design and despite the negatives, I think the form-factor is an absolute classic.

He said TouchID under the display was Plan B if FaceID didn’t work out. Apple engineers confirmed they stopped trying out TouchID under the display once FaceID worked perfevtly.

What else would they say? "We failed guys, you've got this crappy solution to the problem we created for ourselves, sorry"? All the rumours said Apple couldn't get the TouchID to work, not that the FaceID was better, pretty much all the other rumours were correct in the last few months.

Exactly, that's what I thought so I mocked it up the other day, with a "dock" for balance, would have to adjust for new swipe-up opening bar but I think it would have been more elegant...

Posted this the other day too, just trying to explain my thoughts on it, dock bar same size as top but maybe could be "deeper", still balanced and room for the new home "bar" underneath.

I wonder why Bluetooth 4 vs Bluetooth 5 isn’t listed in the comparison. Inmo Bluetooth 5 is the most subtle and underrated upgrade with this generation.

BT5 is one of my main reasons of going from 7 to 8. Now that the iPhone finally got BT5 (and wireless charging) I’m planning on staying with iPhone 8 for several years to come, nothing more needed.

Several days into using my 8 and I couldn't be happier. Here's why I went for it....

First up, maybe my case isn't typical as I was upgrading from iPhone 5 -yes 5, not 5S or SE! That said, it was coupled with an Apple Watch to give me Apple Pay etc.

I was never too enamoured with the design of the 6 (or 6S, or 7), partly due to antenna bands, but also lack of a proper black colour option.

So I was holding out for the X, but disappointed with what £999 would get me - and the moment Animojis made an appearance my mind was made up, "No".

The 7 looked a good option at £549, but I found myself weighing up the 128Gb version - presuming 32Gb might be used up quickly with chunkier photos.

At that point, the price gap between 128Gb iPhone 7 and the 64Gb iPhone 8 was minimal. The benefits an extra £50 brings - beefier processor ready for AR, wireless charging, better camera, better black colour option etc. made the choice easy. And worth the trade lower memory trade off in my eyes.

Probably won't wait five years for the next upgrade - will keep tabs on how the X is received and look forward to future XS!

I've always bought only iPhones. Then I discovered the note 8 and the camera and audio are so much better than the 8 Plus, its amazing.
Funny that you say that because Note's 8 bottom fire speaker is pure garbage, and the headphone jack output is worse than apples dongle....

The camera is a toss, Note is better in some situations but not all of them.

+ there is no way of currently doing that, you need the space for the sensors and cameras.

Even though this was a few years ago and a mid-range phone, I think Sharp did it pretty elegantly with the hardware at the bottom, could be tidier but they didn't have a budget of billions...

Had a decent screen area with width too and an aspect ratio that suited current content better than being overly long.

Having owned iPhones continually since the 3GS iteration, I am most likely to upgrade to the Google Pixel 2 XL mainly due to the fact that Apple is continually playing catch up with new technologies. Wireless charging and an OLED screen have been done years ago. Apple, unfortunately, hasn't truly innovovated since Jobs died.
So, lies then huh. Even this Oled in the x is a better one than the one Samsung uses on its own phone. This soc has many coprocessor and doubles the competition I all metrics, true tone, facial recognition using a depth map and it, massive advantage in computation related to. Camera, including 60 FPS 4K . This chip has machine learning and ships already unlike the competition, no meaningful haptic in the competition. the x will offer the most features including battery life in the smallest volume by far because of its efficiency.

Has anyone made a direct comparison between the iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone X as well? I've been googling for someone who's made an exhaustive comparison between the two but it still seems to be early days.

the X isn't out until Nov 3rd, of course there's no comparison videos. Even if reviewers had the phone, they would be under emargo not to say anything.

So you're going to buy a phone with inferior hardware that costs almost as much as an iPhone X?
