I agree with what some posters have said in that this new device might not be a 6th Gen iPod, but a seperate device for those of us who want video, games etc.

Then there would be a choice of iPod for those who just want music, and ...er... 'vPod' for the people who want more of an iLife-portable.

That would certainly satisfy a lot of people with such a choice.

MA.

what if...

What if the patent diagrams are just cover for what this thing really is, which might-maybe-perhaps-could-be something entirely not-ipod. Maybe, the ipodish descriptions only are to throw us off and it is really a new mini-handheld computer, video player, wireless downloadable from itv-or-your-mac, remote, tv viewer. If apple were to be planning something like that, they would probably want to not let the patent reveal the product. just thinking....

Sorry Chris but you're not allowed to criticise any industrial design. Ever. I still blame you for turning BMWs into swamp-donkeys. 😛 😉

And iDrive - you've got some 'splaining to doooo.

Alrite the 7series was a mistake but idrvie is genius

If they truly plan to release a new device, not about the music, but designed for video users, then who cares about one hand? When you have the attention available to be watching video, you probably have two hands available too (at least I hope you're not watching this while driving). I think the interface could be very awesome and extremely easy to use if someone could get the engineering right to ignore accidental input and always respond to intentional input.

Also, does anyone else think it's weird that these fingers actually look like fingers?!? In a patent drawing?😱

All those buttons in the side makes it look _a lot_ like an eBook reader.. And in that case - WaaahhHH, I cant afford one!! 🙁

Those aren't buttons. those are circles showing you where the touch sensitivity is.

I think people are misinterpreting the diagram.

A video iPod with touch-bezel will still look like this:

Thank you for pointing this out. Saves me having to do it. The interface would look very sleek. Of course, with some of the functions, a lot of less saavy users would definitely need to read that instruction manual, or be initiated by some other user.

I wonder what the battery life is going to be like on this beast. It's going to scratch like mad unless they've got a new material for the front surface. And because it's all touch sensitive, no hard plastic cases.

Hmm, Intriguing ...

They'll probably be using a similar material to most PDA's (it's quite a bit more flexible and durable)

I can scrape my PDA (Dell Axim) up and down my carpet with no visible scratching.

I notice that the fingers in the diagram look small. A little research shows the average male index finger dip joint (last joint at the finger) is about 1cm long. Doing some quick calculations, assuming ANYTHING in the diagram is to scale, the device seems to be about 7" tall. The current Ipod is 4.1" tall. Also, the diagram shows the ability to add to playlist, which leads me to believe it is more than an ipod... perhaps I am completely wrong, of course

One of the things that I hear people complaining about frequently is the inability to manage their playlists on the go. Sound crazy to me, it seems like doing it on the computer is just always going to be so much easier, but to each their own. Of course, if you were ever going to cut the umbilical cord and free the iPod from its computer dependence, something like this would be essential.

Can it play .ogg files? Probably not. Still don't want it, then. And I hate that you have to use iTunes to sync an iPod. I prefer filesystem based solutions like on the iAudio.

Then don't buy it. Simple as that..... For myself can't wait for the full screen as it would perfect during the lots of air travel I do. But for audio, will still use my standard 3G iPod probably. No need for full screen in the car....

Possibly just posturing...

I think that's a much more likely possibility. It's smart to patent anything you invent, even if you have no intention of using it for anything.

I agree with you. I'm not completely convinced that Apple is going to ever implement a full screen video iPod. Remember, a lot of the things that we mac fans are just "SURE" Grand Master Stevie is going to do never materialize (i.e., when is that G5 PB coming out again?😛 ) for one reason or another.

It looks nice. We'll see what happens. For now, I'm still happy with my 20 gig U2 Ed. iPod.

I think we will just have to wait and see. This does tie in with the none-touch touch interface, but then again these things develop significantly, so whatever that guy was talking about would be already quite different.

I still think a vPod before Christmas could help divert attention from the Zune, which only has a 4:3 screen (no, really)

But as others have said, the scroll wheel just feels so right.

I'm hoping for this thingy to be an iLife to Go. with photos, music, movies, WiFi, and some basic PDA functions (ical, ichat, mail, addressbook..., iWork?)
It could be a 4th line of iPods, or even a 6th line of Macs

Wow. Let's hope it looks better than that diagram.
For real. It'd kinda suck not to have the touch click wheel we've seen on most of the mockups. I actually love some of those floating around more than whats dipicted here...

Which brings me to my other point, could people please stop making friggin' mockups??? They'll only make us disappointed when the real deal comes out 😡

Are you insinuating something.....

perhaps that this is not an iPod after all, but rather an iTablet?😱

That's be no different than the current iPod.

And they have to bump up the resolution on their iTunes store. But I'd be surprised if we see this anytime soon.
Music and Audio: What makes you think they haven't been encoding at various bit rates and resolutions since the beginning -- surely they anticpated quality increases down the road.

Wow. Let's hope it looks better than that diagram. Anyways this would be the ultimate iPod (Could be a 4 or 5 inch screen). Of course, the screen needs to be more scratch resistant than previous generations. And they have to bump up the resolution on their iTunes store. But I'd be surprised if we see this anytime soon.

Judging by the size of the fingers, this thing is at least 5x7. 😀

If the entire surface of the ipod isn't more scratch resistant than previous generations I probably won't buy one. I have my cell phone in my pocket all day and it is barely scratched after months of daily use. My iPod 5G got those fine scraches on it just from sliding it into the case that *Apple included with the ipod*.

Bring it on. I need something new to replace my 3G 40GB iPod (last of the black and white screen). I wish the new iPods had a setting for that, so you could make all the menus black and white and only have photo and video play in color.

Anyway getting a black 2G Nano next month. But that's for the gym and snowboarding!!! And wouldn't you know it, it's snowing today!

I don't like it because it would require 2 hands to use.
I'll think, it will be a Creative video device that Apple manufactures. Windows users will like that stupid UI. Because they don't like the future video iPod, they'll by this thing like grazy and Apple gets the money.
That is the 200 million settlement.
My 2 cents 😀
