PocketDish

I've never been interested in the iPod as I don't listen to music much. My friends always laugh at me as I have the "premium" sound system in my car and listen to Sports Talk 95% of the time...

But a product like the PocketDish done by Apple - now that I would be interested in...

For all you newbies I wouldn't put too much credence into what thinksecret says anymore. At one time they did have inside sources but they were sued by Apple and have been going downhill while backpeddling on their stories ever since..

If you choose to believe a site I'd go with appleinsider although after today they too will be going downhill ;)

This coming from a noob, why is it noteworthy that thinksecret is down. Does that mean they are updating their site with news possibly?

Most likely its from 900,000 noodle-heads all pinging thier host at the same time.

Apple to announce iPod with video playback, media partnerships later today
October 12 - Hours prior to Apple's October 12, sources have clarified recent confusion surrounding Apple's iPod announcement today. In brief: the iPod will be feature video playback capabilities but it is not the video iPod nor will Apple bill it as so

Thats curious, I still can't access TS. Thought perhaps Apple legal's long arm might be on the switch ;)

Well if they are just to have video playback then obviously they wouldn't be the "one more thing..." item.

Unless of course it is also a reference to the fact that the iPod can do 'one more thing' i.e. play video.

If they do then thats pretty sweet. That Apple store is cool!

They have previously - no idea about this one. I remember badgering a member of staff about some powerbook updates back in January, and he basically said the first time they hear of updates and new products is when Steve introduces them on the big screen upstairs. An exaggeration I think, but I'll be going along regardless.
If theres a chance I can get my mitts on a new (video or non-video) iPod its worth it! And then onto the pub to watch the Eng v Pol game.....

Potentially a good night!

2. The 'Focus' Thing The media focuses on iPods, but Apple is not the media. Do you think that maybe employees at Apple work on an iPods or Mac team, and not the entire workforce working on 1 product at a time? Apple is working on Macs just as hard as it is working on iPods.
Thank you! Why do people insist that the iPod somehow takes something AWAY from the Mac side? As though they think the iPod is losing money, and Apple must pull people away from Mac projects to afford it  It actually BRINGS three things to the Mac side: a) money b) new Mac users, and c) press/mindshare/reputation. (Does anyone seriously think the Mac gets less press now than before the iPod? It gets more--due to OS X, iPods, Windows problems, etc.)

I would guess the big issues/concerns are that Apple keeps updating the iPods, but has "appeared" to let the Mac slide with no serious upgrades. That would probably be where the uneducated thought process goes. JMO

Edit: For all those who didn't read or hear the conference call yesterday ... Mac sales were UP big year over year ... it was the iPod that did not meet analyst expectations, and such a shortcoming helped Apple fall 1% short of projected revenue (despite profits being a record year).

I'd be very pleased if my 4GB iPod nano was able to play videos. I'd use that for movie trailers, funny videos, music videos (?), and actual movies (though I'd use those downloaded/purchased movies on my Mac mini/TV, not the iPod itself, though it'd be funny to watch a 2 hours movie on a 1.5" screen). ;)

Hmmmm. I think you have me confused with some poor fool lost in a Windows world. I'm a loyal Mac user since 1983-84. Our company was one of the first in Chicago to use Macs as part of our graphic arts business. Now our industry is one of the Mac's biggest users. Music and video have just begun to catch up recently. We were the backbone of Apple for many, many years. Thanks for the intended well-wishings though. ;)

Woah! Totally sorry... you never know who you are talking to on this forum.
1983? Thats a little longer than me when I made the switch. I'm a newbie for a reason... 99/00 or so... G3 blue and white... G4 DP 1ghz waiting for 12" now to add to the family! ;) :D

*Bold mine.) That's exactly the right way to handle video. Enter the field slowly--too few people are ready for more. Jumping in all the way would have the press screaming "failure" in a heartbeat.

I can't get to TS to see for myself

I have to agree with you on this one... Apple's Financial results was a bulletin item on CapitalFM this morning. They are not the type of people to announce this sort of stuff (They play britney quite often!) So Apple is really becoming a household name purely off the back of iPod sales and popularity! I hope it does eventually increase our market share... OSX deserves more!

Here's the whole thing if you still cant get it:

Hours prior to Apple's October 12, sources have clarified to Think Secret recent confusion surrounding Apple's iPod announcement today. In brief: the iPod will be feature video playback capabilities but it is not the video iPod nor will Apple bill it as so. Additionally, Apple will announce partnerships with an unknown number of broadcasting companies that will make content available for download to Apple's device, as noted yesterday.

The new iPod will look nearly identical to current models and will feature the same 2-inch color LCD and click wheel. The video playback capability, which sources say is in fact available in current models but is disabled, will be geared towards watching broadcast content, video podcasts, and other shorter videos, but Apple will not be offering movies to purchase at this time. Instead, the company is hoping to roll out a movie store later in 2006 when the "real" video iPod, which will sport a widescreen display wrapped in a new casing, will debut.

Think Secret has also not been able to confirm with 100 percent certainty the capacity of the new iPods, which will be either 30GB and 60GB or 40GB and 80GB, although it seems more likely now that the latter configurations, as originally reported, will be delivered. Pricing will remain at $299 and $399 with two colors at each price point.

In related news, in an effort not to detract from today's iPod announcement -- iPod revenue now accounts for a third of Apple's total revenue -- Apple is expected to deliver the rumored upgrades to its Macs either later this week or early next, sources said.

One more thing...

A 5th generation new form-factor iPod with an overall smaller/slimmer size but a bigger screen and smaller click-wheel will be introduced. Short films, video podcasts, and music videos will be available at the iTMS, with future plans for downloadable feature films. A set-top box that is really a combination Airport Express and iPod dock on steroids with video-out capability and a remote for on-screen menu and controls will be introduced (ie Apple-quality EyeHome). iLife content is now completely portable (iPod) and/or available on the living room TV (box).

One more thing...

All the bajillion people who have purchased a color-screen iPod are now suddenly the proud owners of a video-capable device. Firmware update available for download immediately. Please visit the new iTMS and enjoy your videos!

Just attach a jeweler's loupe (you know Griffin would make one to fit) and watch movies on your nano on a virtual 9-inch screen :p (With one eye...)

Wow, TS really IS all over the place... such is the rumors game (especially when Apple is feeding you lies to pinpoint the mole ;) )

While that would be disappointing, it goes along with the rumor of MY current iPod gaining video (useful? nah--but cool!) via firmware update. (Or not, since I have hacked my iPod to use a red aqua UI :) )

The thing in those iLounge photos looks to be WIDER than current iPods--which would be OK too, combined with thinner and allowing a slightly bigger screen (and I'm guessing sharp front edges like the nano and original iPod again). We do have the nano to choose from after all.

EDIT: the new iPods don't look thin here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ipodlounger/51875484/

They look overall larger in volume than current ones--about the same thickness and height, but wider. Hard to say with the stylized drawings and unknown hand sizes, though. And different GB sizes have always been different thicknesses. The 30 could be thinner than the 60 (or 80).
