He needs to explain how he is suing Mail in full screen while using another display.

Because he is a lawyer

What kind of stand is that Macbook Pro sitting in? I'm getting a TB display to use with my MBA, and would like something similiar.

I'd say the stand is probably a Twelve South BookArc as can be seen on Amazon. It does look good I'd I reckon I'll have to get one myself :)

You don't turn it off even when you go mobile? I'd turn it off when lugging it around.

Nope. I just close the lid. There's actually very little difference between sleep and off on modern Macbooks anyway.

Yeh it's by twelve south. I got mine off eBay for £10 cos the guy spelt the name wrong so not many people realised it was there!! :) They are neat but i prefer using my MBA as a second display when connected to a monitor

That is awesome. I would only need one monitor though.

Looks cool, but pretty useless. I don't even use all of the real estate on one 27 ACD. Second your losing functionality by not being able to use the screen on the MBP itself.

Wont keeping the power connected all the time kill the mbp's batteries quickly?

No, 95% of all notebooks are connected to the power most of the day. Yes, you do a slow cycle between 95% and 100% charged as self-discharge slowly brings down the charge from 100% to 95%, usually over a period of days. Once it reaches 95%, it will start charging again to 100%.
Of course, it is good practice to maybe once a month discharge fully (until the computer puts itself to sleep).

new 2011 mbp's have horrible temps.

running one display right now...70 degress celsius...
70ºC is quite normal, the fans do not really spin up before 75 to 80ºC (for CPU A, the hottest part the computer).

It Might, but that's what apple care is for. I am kind of hoping that these displays were made for this type of situation and apple has found a way to keep the batteries from overcharging. I do try to run the battery down to 0 at least once a month... Besides, I will probably upgrade in another year anyway.

Wait, did he say "Mail in Fullscreen mode" ?
Does that mean it is now possible to have the fullscreen mode in Lion with multiple screens?

alq.

I just did it the old fashioned way, by pressing the + in the top right corner. There are nothing but disadvantages with running Mail in Lions "full screen" mode in my opinion.

Evidently you don't have a new MBP. They run extremely hot when connected to an external display. With the lid closed the fans are on at a high speed a majority of the time.

I haven't noticed the fans kicking off more often than when I was just running a single display. Having the macbook in the book arc (stand) and off the hot desk seems to help keep cool air surrounding it.

Is the power button the only way to turn on the MBP? Having to open that lid every time you turn on the MBP is a hassle.

I shut it down manually every night but I have it set to Auto Wake every morning for me at 7am when I get up but yes... if you have to turn it on when it's in the dock/stand it's a pain having to pick up and open the laptop.

Next item on his shopping list should be a new couch, that blue one he has is kind of ugly ;)

Aww, I like my beat up old couch. Sure it's seen better days but it's comfy and has indentions in all the right places.

Interesting. Thanks for the tip.

If it's the 15" MBP he could get even more screen space by opening up his MBP couldn't he?

True. Just the 13" that will go blank. But I doubt he's that bothered considering he's got 54" of real estate.

I thought you couldn't run full screen apps with two displays, as the second display would black out! Loads of people are complaining about that, so how the hell did this guy run Photoshop and Full Screen Mail on two separate monitors??

Wait, a Time Capsule with Thunderbolt? Wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the TC?

Having a thunderbolt port on the back of a Time Capsule would help with restoring and/or moving files.

For example, think of how quickly it would be to restore all your programs and photos unto a brand new mac if you could plug right into your time capsule via thunderbolt.

That comment makes no sense.

He's going to cook his MBP.

Nice rig though.

That quote makes perfect sense. You could fry an egg on that MBP the way he has that set up.

Nice rig though. Best of luck.

 This makes no sense. Just because you don't use all of the real estate of a single 27" does not mean that other people don't find that setup useful.

And 2 x 27" displays is more functional than 15" + 27"...

Go run a Mac Mini, iMac or Mac Pro. Then this set up makes complete sense. Who in their right mind runs the Laptop off their battery, AT HOME, when it's stationary?

Seriously, there is a true disconnect between the world of Engineers and Lawyers and other general consumers.

Then the complaint about the y cable with the power adapter split off. You can wait until Apple provides a pure Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt 1-1 cable or wait for a third party.

The ultimate in annoying was him being concerned about how messy his cabling is when the guy is sporting that white chair. Seriously, if you're going to spend all that coinage at least get an Aeron chair.

It's not running off battery. It's being charged by the display.

Apple does sell a thunderbolt-to-thunderbolt cable for $50. But since the thunderbolt lead from the monitor is built in, it's useless in this case.

Now you're just being pretentious. Different folks, different strokes...

You can use for example BetterSnapTool for full-screen mode with multiple displays
