with current tech i have smooth 15" MBP Iris Pro with no lag and perfect screen. So it can be done.
I am sure the main problem is still HD5300 that is on par with HD4000 that came with the first retina macbook and also with UI lag

Mine does that, and I think I mentioned that it didn't because I wasn't sure what someone was talking about.

This is a bug with Yosemite that was introduced with 10.10.2. It happens on my 2012 MacBook Air 13" 2.0 GHz Core i7 and my 2012 27" iMac 3.4 GHz Core i7.

I don't think this is specific to the Retina MacBook.

here is a video on the new air by comparison

Do your rMB still lags when you put it at its native resolution?

The default is not the native. The native is one step below that.

yes, it did. It really made no difference if I was on native or a step up, if I had reduced transparency on/off, or if LCD smoothing was on/off.

Thanks all for responses.

I'm at the Apple store for the first time trying them. They are all 1.1 machines. I can get the UI to lag a bit.... running 6 youtube vids in HD.

Keyboard takes a bit of getting used to but seems decent. I think i'll wait for 1.3...

Thanks!

So it only lags when you try to do stuff like run 6 HD videos?

The thing is, in mattopotamus' video he's just navigating spaces, not using 6 HD videos.

There's a threshold for every device and he crossed the threshold. If you want to use that many spaces without a nanosecond of lag then you should get an Air or Pro.

I don't get why you are trying to minimise the issue so much. It's not a nanosecond, the lag is very obvious. It's ok if it doesn't bother you but no need to be in denial.

He had 4 spaces open with barely any apps/windows.

Ok you win. This computer is lag city. It's a definite do not buy.

Oh and Mine doesn't do that btw.

I'm not trying to win. I'm a bit worried since some people are having this issue and I hope mine doesn't. It's reassuring to hear yours doesn't. I don't want to win since I've already paid and am waiting on mine but I don't want to duck my head in the sand.

Oh ok, I think we are arguing when we shouldn't be.

Mine definitely doesn't have the lag in the video. If I push it harder I can make it lag but I'm very impressed so far.

Yeah I think you're right :p

I'm glad to hear that and looking forward to using mine even more now.

- Rubbish.
This is completely standard and very basic usage. You might as well suggest to a Hyundai owner that if he wants his car to go faster than 20 MPH, he should buy a Porsche.

To mattopotamus: That's quite horrendous. My money is on a software bug, though I can say that it isn't a consistent one. I have nothing of the sort on my 2011 MBP on 10.10.3 driving a higher resolution external display.
Does the lag happen equally when using trackpad gestures and when using keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl + 1, 2, 3, 4; Ctrl + L/R arrow)?

it was equally as bad using the arrows. I never tried ctrl+ 1,2,3. I did a fresh install on both machines, 2 times.

I'm pretty sure this is a Yosemite issue more so than it is a rMB issue. 2015 13" rMBPs also experience UI lag when they really shouldn't. It'll get corrected in the next OSX release (hopefully).

That is what I hope, but the Airs do not have this problem. It could be hardware, it could be software, it could be a combo of the two.

See my previous post. Happens on my MBA, rMB and iMac. I keep Mail I its own window so I see it all the time.

That's good to hear! Would it be possible for you to post a video where you mimic mattopotamus' switching of spaces? Seems the only videos getting posted are by users experiencing lag so it would be nice to see videos where it doesn't happen.

So because you get a slight UI lag with 6 Youtube videos open at once, you're going to spend an extra $250? Who can ever watch 6 videos at once anyways? No one does that in real life usage. LOL, some people...

...and when does the average user open 8 spaces and swipe between them as fast as they can? Yeah, never.

1) It does happen!

After running for a bit, the GPU seems to get bogged and some animation frame rates really drop out, mainly spaces, mission control, and resizing windows.

2) The exact same thing happens on the new 13" MacBook Pro!

It has nothing to do with the rMB being underpowered. You can wait for next year's model if you want, but you'll likely be disappointed, because this is a problem with how Yosemite performs with integrated graphics at HiDPI (retina) resolutions.

I'll just add that rebooting seems to clean this up, for anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to a few days. But it eventually comes back.
