I have no idea why it's not working, but try converting a short episode with everything the same, but lower the bitrate and changing frame rate to either 29.97 or 30.

Let me know the result..

Right I just tried a 2 min file from the starts of a Brothers & Sisters DVD (it was the next series I'm about to start converting)...anyway

I changed the bitrate to the following:

2000bit - NO SYNC
1500bit - NO SYNC
1000bit - NO SYNC
500bit - NO SYNC

The Picture Output is still the same: 640x352 - these are for most of the file i've converted with Handbrake.

The only stuff that will sync (as is doing it while i type this is): Offical Downloads from US iTunes. Desperate Housewives Season 4, Gossip Girl Season 1 and Moonlight. - Don't know their bitrate, but picture is: 640x480, and 640x360.

Hopefully I can see what the video look like on my Touch in the next couple of minutes.

ya, let us know if 640x480 works... by the way, are you converting a widescreen movie w/ ratio of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1?

Format: MP4 File
Codecs: H.264

Framrate: Same as Sourse
Encoder: x264

Average bitrate: 2000

Picture Setting: Output: 640x??? (whatever)

the ipod touch supports two profiles for h.264-encoding; the one that supports up to 2.5 mbps (up to 640x480, up to 30 fps) is baseline profile up to level 3.0.
in handbrake i recommend you use "encoder: H.264 Baseline 1.3" with bitrates below 1.5 mbps.

640x480 - doesn't work... that's also with the bitrate changes (2000, 1500, 1000, 500) and it's also been done again with the framerate changed to 29.97fps... along with the bitrate.

I have no idea about the ratio... it's a TV Series Brothers & Sisters...
Original (Handbrake: Normal settings) are:

Original Output: 720x480
Output: 720x478 - Obviously this is what I've changed to 640x352.
Anamorphic: 853x478
Keep Aspect Ratio: Off
Crop: Auto

Ok... maybe this is a shot in the dark.

I've tried another file, 2min, handbrake settings: 480x272, 500bitrate, h.264... and it still won't sync to my iPod Touch.

Now I've just realised that my Touch came with 1.1.1 already on it... could this be causing the problem? That Apple are stopping people adding their own media to it... see long shot.. but I'm getting frustrated that i can't get anything but official tv/movie downloads to work/sync.

ok, a quick sumery of the ratio plz cos i think i done them wrng. For a widescreen DVD what width n height should I be putting in?
Thx. This was wrote on my touch

i dont use handbrake i use dvd dycrpyter then once i have the vob files i use 3GP to convert them to either an mp4 or h.264 format

i am at the moment using a short file and doing it with ur specs and will let you know the results if it works

i downloaded one of apple trailers today in 848 x 448 at 2500kbs .h264 and it wouldnt play on my ipod touch so i get the feeling apple not telling the right information on how to get top range specs to work on ipod touch

i have downloaded the update 1.1.1 to my touch and all works fine so i think your shot in the dark isnt the right answer

Yeah, I knew it was a long shot :D

Your Welcome

Ok i used 640 x 480 screen size and 2000kbs bitrate and it worked fine

when i went to info tab in itunes i noticed that it played frame rate of 25.00
so i am thinking maybe your frame rate is to high bring it lower to 24.97 see if that helps it

using the 640 x 480 2000 bitrate gives a great clear image but not that much and improvement worthy of such high bitrate from what i seen and when u double tap the screen you lose some of the image making it full size

so i would suggest you give this a go

480 x 272 screen size bitrate 600 h.264 with frame rate 24.97

if the above dont work try the settings as above for just an mp4 file output and see if that works

i did try handbrake on my windows but i never really liked it and i guess its a mac program rather than a windows

let me know how you get on

:( The h.264 file still won't sync.... so took your advice and changed it to mp4 file output instead and it synced.

(To anyone) Any idea why h.264 is not syncing?

How did you choose to output as a h.264 file or mp4 file? is it the encoding method?

Thats a step forward at least we know there is nothing wrong with your iPod Touch i guess its somewhere in your handbrake settings is why its not working and being a windows user i just noticed 3GP converter dont work on a mac only windows so unless you have boot camp on your mac it wont work for you

if you have this is the link to it

got to admit its got me baffled as well feel like going to handbrake and try and find a solution for you if i understood handbrake lol

i hope a fellow handbrake person in here can tell you in a step by step guide how to make it work

if i ever find anything on the forums or other sites i let you know what there step by step guide is

it looks lke 768kbs is the highest bitrate you can use for h.264

the 2500kbs is for mpeg 4 only

I just tried that 768kbs in Handbrake just to see if it made any difference... and still nothing is syncing... well nothing in h.264 for some reason?

Could I have a Touch that won't allow my to sync my own h.264 content?

Argh itl only take an expert 2 secs to answer! - But is it 480 - 272 for the width and height on handbrake for the iptouch?? (For a widescreen view on widescreen dvds)

no i think it will work once you get the right settings

are you using the profile h.264 for iPod in handbrake

i downloaded it and seen a few profiles on it , and i think thats the one you might need to use for ipod use

and then in the video setting you can resize the screen size you want making it 480 x 272 then the kbs size possibly 400 just to see if it works and if it does you can then try 600kbs bitrate

Thanks for getting back to me. I nipped over onto the Habdbrake forum, forgot that I was also a member over there and posted the same problem and others have been experiencing the same.

The said just use iPod High Resolution preset and tinker it from there as creating your own can cause "bitrate data spikes" they didn't go into detail but it will cause problems.

I currently using iPod High Resolution, 2000bit, h.264, 640x352 and on the small test file it synced and worked. Only bumpped the bitrate up to make it looks better on my AppleTV.

Ps. First post from my touch. Works great.

that keeps the image screen widescreen but i havent ever used a widescreen dvd yet to answer your question correctly , most dvds i have used have been in old standard format

its like most things when encoding trial and error but make sure you start with a small file size incase it dont work

i was watching the football and then trying to get the wireless remote streaming idea working for my ipod touch using the windows program orb i got it to work for radio but when i want videos or music it keeps coming up firewall error

great that you got your synced to work , its sounds as if its a handbrake problem rather than anyones settings.

I got to ask i know you want both to work on ipod and apple tv but what are the file sizes that you end up with at output for say a 1hr 30 min dvd ? and how long do you have to wait for it to be the finished article ?

It was an episode of Brothers & Sisters which I left to do one full episode of last night (only "dvd" on my HD)... the finished file size ended up at: 638.05mb and that's for a 41min37sec episode.

1hr 30min DVD? - a really rough guess would be 1.2gb - again a guess from the time and size i have.

Time to wait... Unknown, but a calculated guess would be less than 6hours - but not exactly sure how less. I started it just before I posted a comment with my Touch which was at 12.05am, and I was awake at 6am, and noticed that my computer was asleep. (white light flashing).
This was with nothing else running, bluetooth, airport, dashboard, and no others apps, the back lit keyboard was off, volume off, and screen brightness off (so it was just a black screen) - I found that if anything else is on while converting the time slowly increases... depending what is running.

Hope that helps.

I even got one to work in Handbrake i took a chapter of 5 mins put my own handbrake settings in 480 x 272 400 kbs left frame size at automatic and sound at automatic

the way i got it to work was when it ask you the folder you want to save the file and then you have to give the file a name it has mp4 as the file type i you click the drop down arrow and change it to m4v it seems to work once the file has been encoded and it ends up say chapter.m4v the name i saved it in instead of the mp4

then i put it on itunes and it uploaded to my ipod touch , when i did the above setting and let handbrake save the file as the default mp4 it didnt work so maybe this is the work around that handbrake needs for people to use their own settings

if you try it out let me know how you got on with it
