WRT AOD: I thought I wouldn't need it and would immediately disable it - after all, I have an Apple Watch. Nevertheless, I then found it cool and useful (the time can be read from far afar) so I won't disable it, after all.
Apple could implement the same "Dynamic Island" tech for the notches and that would essentially solve the notch issue. That being said, the software update would eliminate the main reason people are upgrading to the 14 Pro. Very brave of them! So....there you go.Even without taking Dynamic Island into consideration, the pill by itself looks so much better than the notch. I would buy an iPhone 14 Pro Max for that alone. I’m so happy to finally have the notch behind us.
Cos we expect that a new sim standard should make life easier. This is anything but a relaxing fireside chat. I typically enjoy Dan's reviews, but his anti-eSIM rant in this video is embarrassing. I went from a physical SIM to an eSIM on ATT in all of about 5 minutes. The process worked seamlessly, as it did for everyone I know who received their new phone last Friday. If you're going to use a small discount carrier with your top-of-the-line iPhone, I'm not sure why you would expect that to be easy.
I've seen a lot of people have issues with PrePaid plans transferring to eSim. Some it worked no problems, others had to put a call in to make it happen. Pro Max is amazing!
You do realize that other people have different experiences than you do, right? This is anything but a relaxing fireside chat. I don't have a problem with him sharing his experience. My issue is that he basically attributed his troubles to Apple switching to E-sim only, when really it was his carrier that was the issue.I don't think thats a problem, sharing his experience. He's probably not the only person out there on a smaller carrier also interested in the new phones.
Anecdotally, going from 12P to 14PM was easier than I expected on ATT. I felt like I Airdropped my service to the other phone with a pop up and waiting a couple minutes. Not sure if that was everyone's though, I've had some launch years where im in activation hell.
Despite this- I too wish my 14PM had a SIM for flexibility. It wasn't bothering anyone, being there, other than Apple.
The size/popularity of his carrier is completely irrelevant. He’s a customer, not a shareholder…if he was led to believe the transfer would go alright and he paid the money to get it done, there should be nothing for the customer to worry about. This is anything but a relaxing fireside chat. I thought Leeds fans were a bit stronger than that 😂 Sounds like you need to go to the gym and do some push-ups if you can't handle the weight of a smartphone.I use a Pro Max and have no issues with the weight.I like heavy phones.
It is good you got it done easy but others didn't including myself with Verizon. It was a real nuisance and some of their reps don't know what to do. It was basically a lottery to get one that knew what to do and got it done after a failed original try. This is anything but a relaxing fireside chat. yes - that is 250 mg!The pro max is 1/4 of a kilogram ,can you imagine that ?
Have been testing out the 48 mp raws in daylight - and they are absolutely amazing. Better than I expected. Interesting you were able to get a good shot at night too - where I would expect the 12mp binning etc to do better.Excellent initial review!
I've been enjoying my 14 ProMax since Friday. Updating from my 12 Pro went smoothly.
Initially I was looking forward to the Always On Display feature. But in the end decided I liked it better off. I'm getting two full days of regular use on a fully charged battery. That's great! I also like being able to ramp up the brightness outside. The phone feels fast and experience no delays.
I'm really looking forward to making some photos with the new cameras - the main reason I purchased the ProMax. Maybe in a few more days when the rain stops.
Here's a snap I made in the neighborhood a couple days ago before the Sun came up, as an experiment. Shot in RAW yielding a 79.7 Mbyte image.

It's very satisfying, you don't want that to be over too quick ;pAgreed. The fact that the pill it functional too has been a plus for me. I'm looking forward to other apps picking it up as well.
One question that came to me watching this video. I've noticed this in other reviews too where they are pulling the phone out of the box on video for the first time. What's the story with people really slowly and deliberately peeling off the soft cover sticky deal that Apple puts on the screen of a new phone? Picks up the phone at normal speed, but then peels over the screen cover like it's some kind of surprise what's going to be underneath and we're building anticipation. Not exclusive to this video, but have always wondered if there is something I'm missing on that.
Actually, I love the ease of eSim whilest traveling abroad! Just enter the code or use the app and I’m up and running in a literal minute. Before I had to search for a store (that is open!), fill in a lot of forms, wait for the sim, use the sim tool (which you always lose) to replace the sim card, activate it... All in all it took many hours to get things going. I am glad those days are over. It does of course depends on which countries you vist. But for those ‘sim-only’ countries I carry a cheap spare Pixel from a few year’s ago🤓Love that a quarter of the video is him complaining about Esim and how it doesn't work very well or that he waited in queue so long to get help with it. When all of this is just attributable that he is on some small, no-name carrier without the resources to handle an Apple launch.
And no offense to those carriers... The big carriers struggle every year with the Apple launch.
But we really didn't need his rant about esims and how carriers aren't ready for them. By his own admission, he went to a Verizon store and had everything up and running in minutes.
Moral of the story: go with a small carrier at your own risk. It is literally the risk everyone takes with every product involving a small company: they have less resources. Maybe that's worth it to you for some other reason, but don't complain about it when it doesn't work out for you.
I do International travel and having only an esim is going to be a pain. But, I am more than happy to deal with it because I am ready for physical sims to go the way of the dodo.
The eSIM controversy is just another convenient dead horse to beat. Whenever a new iPhone comes out there has to be SOMETHING to flog, another whatever-gate for the critics to pound on. But then the sales results come in and the critics wonder why their tales of horror didn’t slow the uptake down. Happens every time.Actually, I love the ease of eSim whilest traveling abroad! Moving forward with eSIM (for what reason I'm still not sure) and screwing out tons of customers who were perfectly happy with their cheap carriers, shows IMO, Apple's lack of interest in the real needs of their customer base. For lots of us, paying a ton of money for a premium iPhone, and then being forced (once again, like when AT&T was the only iPhone carrier) to pay those higher monthly fees to the big three really stinks. Been a devoted Apple fan since 1990 and the pessimism grows a liiiiittle more each year.I don't think thats a problem, sharing his experience. He's probably not the only person out there on a smaller carrier also interested in the new phones.
