I don't understand this statement. You said you would love to be able to mirror your MBP or your iPad to your television. So it seems to me you certainly do have a real use for an AppleTV.
Clocknova - I use Air Server on my Mini, which so far has saved me getting an ATV2.
Or he's using the iMac in display mode + HDMI-Mini DP adapter...
edit: this was meant to be a reply to the people thinking about streaming Hulu etc content. silly mobile page view messes up
Apple still has many underdeveloped aspects in iCal (Calendar) and DVD Player and iTunes ... I somehow doubt they will have figured them out in .8 if they didn't get them worked on by .7, which is a shame. They've had a decade to make brilliant programs out of their very good programs... what's directing Apple's software?
So, Apple are finally enabling Intel Wireless Display, which has been built in all of their computers since last year? And they are calling it a new feature and of course limiting it only to Apple TV, instead of all generic WiDi boxes? Nice...
People are still waiting for completely new incredible feature Full HD playback on Apple TV so don't be surprised that this is labled as something incredible, magic, revolutionary.
Apple just sold a **** ton more AppleTV's with AirPlay for the desktop.
Steve
If you use the regular Video Airplay, it transfers 5.1 audio and the video quality is exactly the same as the source. If you turn on mirroring, I believe audio is limited to stereo and the quality of the video depends somewhat upon your wifi connection.
You should only use mirroring if regular Video Airplay is not supported by the app.
This OSX looks awesome for the social network zombies, but Apple still has many underdeveloped aspects in iCal (Calendar) and DVD Player and iTunes ... I somehow doubt they will have figured them out in .8 if they didn't get them worked on by .7, which is a shame. They've had a decade to make brilliant programs out of their very good programs... what's directing Apple's software?
So far it seems like a fluff-OS version, and probably something to skip over. The most amazing addition is the wireless mirroring, but it is only 720? Come on, Apple. It is 2012, not 2005.
Exactly what I was thinking. Apple has to stop diddling with 720 and get the balls to go 1080. I hope this year they update everything with the A6 and go for full HD resolution. That's the day I buy Mt. Lion and ATV.
The airplay is SWEET! I can't wait to get my customer seed and try it out for myself.
Off topic: Can anyone with an iPad2 and Apple TV confirm that you can mirror (with sound) video from apps like NBC and ABC?
I'm digging everything except the fat tabs in Safari.
I hate it on the iPad and I definitely hate it here.
Apparently I'm the only one who feels that none of these features are exciting or useful.
