Video Walkthrough of AirPlay and Other Features in OS X Mountain Lion

So, Apple are finally enabling Intel Wireless Display, which has been built in all of their computers since last year? And they are calling it a new feature and of course limiting it only to Apple TV, instead of all generic WiDi boxes? Nice...

I don't understand this statement. You said you would love to be able to mirror your MBP or your iPad to your television. So it seems to me you certainly do have a real use for an AppleTV.

No, I don't. I already have a fully-functional (and I would argue MORE functional) media center than an AppleTV, so I have no use for another one. I'm not going to pay 99$ for an AppleTV just for Airplay functionality when I know that a software hack would enable that feature without any additional hardware. So my question stands: what software will allow my Mac Mini to appear as an AppleTV on my network?

So far, I have found Airmac, but I cannot get it to work properly.

Clocknova - I use Air Server on my Mini, which so far has saved me getting an ATV2.

Thanks. It works pretty well, but it does not support display mirroring due to Apple's Fairplay encryption. I'm going to keep looking to see if I can find an app that has been able to get around that. Until then, I'll use Air Server.

The airplay is SWEET! I can't wait to get my customer seed and try it out for myself.

Off topic: Can anyone with an iPad2 and Apple TV confirm that you can mirror (with sound) video from apps like NBC and ABC?

About time! Saves on all the host of cables that are needed currently. Definitely picking up an Apple TV once they allow it to play 1080p content.

edit: this was meant to be a reply to the people thinking about streaming Hulu etc content. silly mobile page view messes up

Yeah, mobile replies are real flaky.

Apple still has many underdeveloped aspects in iCal (Calendar) and DVD Player and iTunes ... I somehow doubt they will have figured them out in .8 if they didn't get them worked on by .7, which is a shame. They've had a decade to make brilliant programs out of their very good programs... what's directing Apple's software?

Yeah, like where is the map link in the calendar location field? A total no-brainer.

It looks like there will be a lot of cool stuff in this update tho like emailing out of finder? Will be awesome for sending quick proofs and stuff to clients or saved images to family & friends.

People are still waiting for completely new incredible feature Full HD playback on Apple TV so don't be surprised that this is labled as something incredible, magic, revolutionary.

Give Apple five more years and they will invent [Windows] Media Extender which is a much better feature for it allows for two-way communication between the computer and display (X-Box to be exact) so that the user can use extender's controls (keyboard, remote control etc.) to operate the applications.

This just shows how far behind Windows OS/X really is.

Looks great if you're fully in the eco system.

This update looks great if you're fully in the iOS/OS X eco system, but not much to cheer about if you're not. I'm certainly interested to hear what changes under the hood they'll make, if any. It's also disappointing to hear that core 2 duo's will be left out of the fun. Seems that Apple is eliminating older macs more frequently than in the past.

Apple are going for the throat of PC and mobile computing with all these software updates. Can't wait to see those new MBP's!

So how do they tweet from within safari? Is it a keyboard sequence or a dedicated button?

EDIT: I apologize if this is something developers can't discuss.

Apple just sold a **** ton more AppleTV's with AirPlay for the desktop.

Steve

2nd gen apple tv's just became good resellers for 1st timers. how many of us sell our iPhones to upgrade to the fresh new one. I'm doing the same with my current ATV to upgrade to the new and improve 3rd gen :D

If you use the regular Video Airplay, it transfers 5.1 audio and the video quality is exactly the same as the source. If you turn on mirroring, I believe audio is limited to stereo and the quality of the video depends somewhat upon your wifi connection.

You should only use mirroring if regular Video Airplay is not supported by the app.

Thanks for the explanation.

they need to bring 'find my friends' to the mac. or some type of web app in iCloud... i really like this feature on the iPhone.

Well, one feature you will like is that unchecking the box "open windows.." on shutdown/restart, ML will remember your choice.

So will AirPlay Mirroring on ML allow me to stream any type of video format being played on my Mac to the Apple TV? I know ATV has its limitations but I'm wondering if Mirroring will allow us to circumvent that?

AirPlay as a System Out will be fantastic; a bit overdue, but glad it's finally here. It will be really great in Logic: being able to easily target other devices, from a home stereo setup to an iPhone, without having to export the track manually (which is time-consuming) will be fantastic for testing how your music sounds on other devices easily.

This OSX looks awesome for the social network zombies, but Apple still has many underdeveloped aspects in iCal (Calendar) and DVD Player and iTunes ... So far it seems like a fluff-OS version, and probably something to skip over. The most amazing addition is the wireless mirroring, but it is only 720? Come on, Apple. It is 2012, not 2005.

Exactly what I was thinking. Apple has to stop diddling with 720 and get the balls to go 1080. I hope this year they update everything with the A6 and go for full HD resolution. That's the day I buy Mt. Lion and ATV.

It's probably the same guy that did such a great job with iMovie and Quicktime, in the not to distant past.

Mirroring works with those apps but why would you do that? They already support regular video Airplay and in nice HD quality. You don't have to turn on mirroring. Just use Airplay. I know this is true for the NBC app. Not sure about ABC.

Finally we can get rid of Growl, which is no longer free anyway! If 3rd party apps and in particular IM programs like Adium will make use of the new Notification API.
