I feel like a part of that is perhaps related to 'karma farming' or posting just for up votes, which seems much more prevalent on Reddit than other forum sites with reactions. Myself I would be perfectly happy to see reactions eliminated altogether, I never liked the idea.

I agree completely. I'm an active reader and occasional contributor at Ars Technica, and the users there are so concerned with up/down votes that it creates a significant echo chamber - and I say that as someone that's generally aligned with their views. But it unfortunately creates a very homogeneous group of commentators, and I think that's a shame.

I notice this as well, I haven't followed Ars in many years but when I pop in I am always amazed that site even bothers with the rate up/down thing. It's ruined a lot of sites in my opinion, the few forums I still go to that have no reactions or where the reactions are almost non-existent I enjoy it. People have to answer to give feedback, which is the only way to ensure lively discussion anymore.

MacRumors forum software has had an 'Unlike' button for years now. And when I joined in 2011, there was a 'downvote' button.

Both of those got turned off very quickly.

I remember that, I've been on MR for 20 years but my join date doesn't reflect that. If I recall both times they added down votes it was the result of a forum software upgrade then some experimenting by arn and the team followed. I think down vote the first time lasted for a while because it was one of the reasons I stopped coming to the site originally in 2012.

There used to be downvote/upvote 'wars' on individual posts, particularly in the iPhone forum. That's why it got shut off.

I do have to backtrack a bit on the uselessness of Reddit. I had commented on a Wallstreet thread about my own Wallstreet I that was missing the rubber/copper(?) plate and logo on the top lid, and someone else commented, asking what I was missing. I offered up a photo, and had also started my own thread asking if anyone had a parts Wallstreet 12" or 13", as the lid of the 12 and 13" WSIs are interchangable. The same responder offered up a 12" passive matrix display assembly for no cost, and sent it off to me. The display sacrificed it's top lid, and now my Wallstreet I is whole again.

I admit that a lot of that sub is pretty much a dog show, but sometimes, there is help to be found and offered. My stance on Reddit (with a few exceptions that I won't mention, as they're offtopic here) has definitely softened a bit, and I'm going to be sure to pass the generosity that I received forward.

Yeah, so I get trashed a couple months ago for suggesting an additional source to post at. Someone had posted about their Intel MacPro. I'm also told in that thread that this person's MP was old enough to be vintage and therefore allowed (at least by the people in that thread anyway).

But then there's this, and the OP of that thread is being told "No, we don't support Intel!"

Reddit, Vintage Apple

They should make up their minds - otherwise I can only reach the conclusion that Intel is supported based solely on who's doing the posting.

Simply absurd. I've seen plenty of posts about early Intels in there just as someone who finds the stuff by Google search results. The mob can set the rules as they see fit, apparently. That's sure how it comes off from there. "just doesn't feel right"

Yeah, the thread I mentioned was a few months back. 30" Cinema Display attached to a MacPro. Apparently that makes it PowerPC germane.

I post about my Cinema Displays too, but the computer they are attached to matters.

If they’re this particular about it, then it might be time for them to rename their sub to /r/VintagePPCMacs

Since Apple maintains a list of what they consider vintage products wouldn't it make sense to consider anything on that list vintage for the purposes of discussion in the VINTAGE Apple forum on Reddit?

That would invite even things like the first four gens of iPads and iPhones from 2013, so probably not an ideal divider.

The idea being if the forum is focused on a specific Apple product, such as Vintage Intel Apple products, that one would limit discussion to those products which meet the forums topic and appear on Apple vintage product list.
