I know that every model is better than the last one, but in the beginning the progress from model to model is the biggest. The original iPad became unusable after a few years. Basic apps no longer worked and the old versions of those apps, that might still work, were not available in the app store. Or think about the first iPhone that did not even have an app store. It came with a few apps an that was it.

True but what you are overlooking is many of us enjoyed the original iPhone and iPad for what it was then. Did they get better in later models? Sure. But while you were carrying your flip phone waiting for a call, I was replying to email and exploring the web on good ole version 1 iPhone. And enjoying my look at the future while others still lived in the past waiting smugly for version 2 or 3. And maybe your wallet thanks you, but it would also thank you if you never ate out , or travelled, or did almost anything fun. Anyway nothing wrong with waiting if that’s your thing, but I’m never disappointed by forging ahead.

I hope this gets the AirPods Max treatment with no annual upgrades (until it becomes cheaper ofc).

I'd feel like **** spending nearly $4k only for a better one so soon.

Just push it up to 120 or 144hz and give it HDR (I know, easier said than done) and you will easily satisfy 90% of the problems with the displays. The only other thing is to boost the resolution. Again, easier said than done.

Except the M1 Air; it's fantastic.

I still waited a good six months before I ordered one, though. I'm not an early adopter and prefer everyone else test out new tech first.

It is but I don’t think this counts as a first generation product.

One of the reasons it’s so fantastic is that it was designed around a much hotter and battery hungry processor. “Just” swapping out the processor instantly improved the entire existing product immensely.

Oof, no upgrade for over 3 years? When it's already not using the latest chip?

Not sure if joking but it’s designed around a specific performance target. The chip in the Nintendo Switch is old enough to be in middle school but it still runs games designed for it just fine. An extreme example but the Vision Pro will be fine until the second gen.

In fact it’s around the third gen or so you have to start worrying. Let us not forget the third iPad, the one that was only on the market for 7 months because it had a retina display without enough GPU power to drive it.

The only thing they reused was the body and the screen. The entire main board and processor were new, and the processor is first gen.

I noticed that Shapr3D has job openings for Vision Pro developers. Due to the complexity of building professional 3D apps we might not see many professional modeling programs on day one, but by 2027 the pro graphics market may be redefined by the headset.
Very interesting news, thanks for posting.
Do you use Shapr3D? I’ve been intrigued by the demo, but haven’t found the time to actually learn it yet. It does seem like some of the most innovative stuff in CAD right now.
I’ve long thought VR could be a big revolution in CAD - seems likely that Shapr3D could be the ones to figure out how to really take advantage of AVP for CAD. Looks like this could become the compelling use case for AVP for me, definitely something to watch.

Or, to put that a different way: the only things they swapped were the board and the cooling system.

That's the most significant part of the computer. The design of the case, keyboard and screen are superfluous to the mainboard and processor.

Not at all. The whole package matters.

They could've, for instance, put M1 in the 2015 12-inch MacBook case. Such a laptop would still have had an impressive SoC, but would've been burdened by poorer thermals, a controversial keyboard, and few ports.

Apple doesn't sell CPUs, they sell computers.

I buy based on internal hardware and software. I don't really care much about physical design.

I consider them as tools, and treat them as such. My opinion, though.

well - I am exactly in that situation but imagine waiting another three years until you'll get something better!

I am still thrilled by the idea of the AVP and I am first in line in Europe to get one - probably later in 2024 - but the same will probably apply for 2027 - potentially end of 2027.

A lot can happen and since we're living in risky times it might not even be possible ( for me ) to spend that amount of money in 2027.

I have learned in my life that the time is alway now and I stopped searching for reasons or foolish ideas to avoid things. In case I want something I get it now in case I am willing to use it.

Just got a multitude of investment for new high end speakers that excel this investment by 20x only for speakers.

So it's probably a question of your monetary situation in life.

I will get the AVP at day one in my area - probably not before May or June 2024 - but there will be other toys like the new Sony GM 300 f/2.8 before that to bridge the gap.

Compared to the new lens ( also on order ) the new AVP is only half the price. So it's all relative.

After all I go to work to do such interesting endeavors 🤣

Dang I had to come to macrumors to find out about the latest shiny from Sony lol. Would love that lens.

Agree with you on the APV, will have to give it a try to decide for myself.

What do you shoot?
everything my photographer's heart desires
A 300 f/2.8 is suitable for all kinds of sujets like Safari & Animals in action, sports, model shooting, indoor sports like ice hockey, swimming. But also architecture and landscapes. Owning a fast tele prime with under 3 lb is a really nice thing to have. The Sony GM 300 is the lightest and smallest ultra fast 300 mm prime in existence.

I wish the article said "The Vision Pro 2 will not get really hot while wearing it, higher performance so that it doesn't freeze constantly while playing videos or games, and prevent the ring of death that causes spots on the screen before finally not powering up anymore."
