Mostly, I use it on a Mac to play files QuickTime won't. Other than that, not much. It's very capable, but the UI feels a bit dated (if functional) and it has about a million features I don't personally use. I think for power users of video, it's a good tool to have around.Hey Gang...
Can someone explain to me in layman‘s terms about VLC… i used to be able to watch movies with VLC on my computer a very long time ago… But how is it used for Apple TV and an iPhone…?
What is VLC primarily used for… Thanks guys - again this is just a general question about VLC and who really uses it…
I’m so out of the loop at this point I don’t know what it is used for primarily
Wow, IINA is nice. Not sure what features each has that overlap each other or not, but it can't hurt to have an extra (free) tool around. I could definitely see IINA as a better QuickTime replacement since the UI is so much closer to QT.Switched to IINA already. Too late.
If you are on macOS you should be using IINA. It has the most streamline "mac/quicktime look" out of any player in respect to the power it packs. It's got everything and possibly the most power out of any Mac video player. It's still in development (alpha currently), but runs like it's polished. It is based on the MPV player.
If you are on Windows you should be using MPC-HC with customization guides out there to get the best for your needs. When I need to bitstream Dolby Atmos to my theater set-up, and make sure the projector is also getting the best frames through 'madVR' and filters, MPC-HC covers everything I need.
Respect to VLC for making an effort here, but most people stopped using VLC years ago because it's so resource heavy.
can IINA support chromecast?Switched to IINA already. Too late.
Thank you very much!!!You can check on http://jell.yfish.us/
Crashes when I change the icon back to the good one, lol.
Does Movist still get some love in 2018?
Good to know!colors oversaturated with IINA .
for me , Movist is better actually
Ok...used IINA for awhile but couldn't get my Mira infrared remote to work with it (had to use my mouse). VLC does. And to be honest VLC seems actually better than IINA.....so i'll wait until IINA comes of age before trying it again. If you are on macOS you should be using IINA. That's what I did. It gave me: "Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSImageCacheException', reason: 'Cannot lock focus on image <NSImage 0x608000271fc0 Size={0, 0} Reps=()>, because it is size zero.'"Viewing the package contents via right-click and replacing the VLC icon file (in the Resources folder I think) works.
Probably to best leave alone. Appearances change but if the fundamental performance remains stable then best to live with it.Crashes when I change the icon back to the good one, lol.

I tried on my 2017 iMac and VLC doesn't seem to use HW acceleration for 4K HEVC.
IINA does it.
