This is awesome news. Up til now it was impossible (afaik) to play videos that used Dolby TrueHD codec for audio with VLC or anything else. Very very happy. Apparently I should have known about IINA...

Now give me itunes flac and I'll be happy for a while

Is High Sierra needed for hardware decoding on VLC, IINA etc, or can you use a Kaby Lake mac with previous macOS Sierra or El Capitan?

When Kaby Lake was introduced, Sierra was the OS that came with the computers so I don't know if El Cap will work with those.

Yeah right, didn't think of that. Sierra then. Would rather avoid High Sierra due to APFS. Will VLC hardware decode?

Seems like VLC doesn't hardware decode on Sierra, I guess the same goes for IINA. To get hardware decode and avoid APFS I suppose the only thing to do is buy a fusion equipped Mac or try some hack like installing 10.13 with
"sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/startosinstall --converttoapfs NO"
