So far my findings are:
mkv - depending on the file it'll crash the app or have a black screen and play only the sound
avi - yes
flv - no
mpg - no
wmv - no
mp4 - yes
mov - yes

Can't stream files over a network, just syncing through iTunes

Just grabed it and tryed 2 files:
1. H.264 720p .mkv file, VLC gives a warning "Your iPad is probably too slow to play this movie correctly." and its right, the file plays but the video is VERY choppy and totaly unwatchable!

2. XviD .avi file, playes just fine :)

Ill test more files later and update everybody on my findings

Also, has anybody figured out how to remove files? :p

Same here. I tried an MKV file and got audio only. FLAC doesn't appear to be supported and neither does WMV - I imported those file types and neither showed up as available in the player.

Kind of a bummer - MKV support is what I was looking forward to the most with this.

Actually this is good news. It's means that MKV is a supported container. Remember that MKV does not describe the video format, just the wrapper around it. So the file you played had a supported audio codec, but unsupported video codec. That means that some MKV's should play fine.

Keep in mind that there was some concern whether VLC would be approved. This release probably has the minimum amount of effort put in to make it work. Now that 1.0 of the app has been approved, I hope the dev team will be willing to dedicate move time towards enhancing it.

why are you guys so excited over this?! any file that i paid for i can already play on my iPad EASILY (thur conversion or iTune). it's those files that I downloaded that I need this player for, such as divx, wmv, and MKV. If this player doesn't play them, WHAT IS THE POINT?

only way I found is to delete the app and then add it back...sucks

I thought the rap against VLC going "mainstream" is that it's potentially violating a bunch of patents and therefore Apple wouldn't touch it. Apple probably owns some of the patents! What's going on with that?

Wow! I didn't even know you could do that. Now I can watch my pron!

It's just like other apps that need a "file system" like Comic Reader, etc. You use iTunes. Within the app interface, you can drag and drop files into the applications specifically.

Ultimately, iOS needs a unified file system, but there's still something workable right now.

If you click on the file in itunes and hit delete button it will delete it.. Took me a few mins to figure it out too....

Or backspace on a macbook keyboard :D thx for that though.

Anyway, a few more findings

1. m4v file created in iMovie SD res, Audio plays fine, video is choppy as hell
2. mp4 720p file, get the same warning, and playback is horrible.

So the only thing I have found that plays fine is XviD and most likely DivX (but who uses that anyway?) :)

Well, it does support Divx and MKV and I would expect better performance and codec support going forward.
But I understand your point. The current build is lacking in many ways. Seems more of a proof of concept. While I find myself very excited, I don't think I'll get much use out it until version 2.0

The reason I'm interested in VLC is that I thought I could use it as a front end for my MythTV system. In the UK digital TV is broadcast as unencrypted MPEG2 data. VLC on the desktop can play this back without any transcoding being necessary, I had hoped that VLC on the iPad would also be able to. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to wait to see if they add the features I need later.

you know home videos and stuff recorded on devices that make other types of files besides that of the apple

VLC main branch still needs devs for Mac :(

Until that gets fixed, I worry more about its longevity than device support. Even though this branch will get funneled back in, or so they say, its only going to provide device specific developers for iOS, not OSX, which is what they so desperately need.

Good point. Here's to hoping...

So apperantly I did have some old DivX files  and I just tossed 19 of them to be exact at VLC and they all play just fine.... But now there is another problem, no folders, or sorting of any kind exept by name. So this is gonna get really messy

someone above said it didn't....

i am all about watching non-apple format (MKV and divx) but some people said it's not playable. Now some said they are....so can it play or not? To me it's only useful if I can play my collection of torrents and MKV anime....at least in 720p

the worst player i've ever seen

why apple approves such useless apps?

it even doesn't recognize the files i uploaded to it's folder via itunes

after a week of waiting for it, absolute disappointment

hell

if the file type isn't supported, it won't show up in the app

720p wont play, audio will but video is choppy and blocky and totaly unwatchable

Reboot iPad first

I suggest to reboot your iPad first. When we first tried it after installation, it was lagging and crashed. After reboot the videos we tried ran smooth. Don't expect full codec compatibility (yet) and obviously the iPad does not have the horse power to properly play 720p and 1080p files (yet) but this is a great first step.
A lot of our videos don't have iTunes compatibility. VLC now offers a great way to play them on our iPad without having to do painful and lengthy conversions.
