Yeah, finally showed up! Looks a hell of a lot better than the original VLC.

A search shows me multiple for-pay apps, VLC Streamer, VLC Streamer Free, VLC Remote Free, VLC Remote, but the link in the article doesn't currently work for me. Any insights? Is it for-pay now?

Not yet on iTunes West Coast, don't know if that matters though. Also, no on PC but ipad so maybe that has something to do? In any case, hope it becomes available soon

It is available on the west coast and has been for a few hours... Just keep trying I got it right at 8 and had best luck with the direct link at the top of this post

No it's free for best luck try the direct links in this article or search "videolan" because that's the author I had best luck with the links though https://itunes.apple.com/app/id650377962

Finally got the app for both iphone and ipad. Put on a .flv and .avi file, the avi file doesnt have proper audio at all. the flv plays and sounds fine. Going to try other formats and different rips of .avi.

OK I've tested this on iPod Touch 5th Gen (Which is virtually equivalent spec to an iPhone 4S and slightly slower than an iPad 3)

1.4GB SD avi: Plays Fine

4GB 720p MP4: "Device too slow" error message. Lots of stuttering (Plays fine on iOS player)

1.9GB 1080p MP4: "Device too slow" error message. Lots of stuttering (Plays fine on iOS player)

2.9GB 720p MKV: Plays fine

4.7GB 720p MKV: Plays. Just. Dropped frames and stuttering

14GB 1080p MKV File: "Device too slow" error message. Lots of stuttering

So, it looks like you'll need the iPhone 5/iPad 4 and above to play anything 720p upwards unless you re-encode at a lower bitrate or to MP4 and send it to the iOS player. iPad 3 may be able to handle HD MKV as it has A5X which has faster graphical support.

If anyone has those devices it would be good to see how you got along.

Thanks. As I posted earlier, it won't play a 720p WMV on my iPhone 4S so it looks like you do ned iPhone5 for HD video. Although, the 4S does play 1080p videos shot on the iPhone perfectly (though I haven't tried one in VLC - I only used the WMV as it happened to be in my DropBox)

My guess -- VLC is not using UIKit to play videos since it's a port, so it doesn't get to take advantage of the iPhone/iPad MP4 hardware acceleration.

Which is a shame.

Does anyone know if this hardware video acceleration is being opened up for 3rd party apps with iOS 7 at all?

Will this allow me to play other video formats besides MP4? Can I play my .avi files through this VLC app? If so, how would I get those files onto my iPad since I won't be able to do so through iTunes.

That reading comprehension thing just isn't working out for you is it?
The article explains multiple methods of accessing content.

The app is universal and available in the Australian iOS store for download. It's simply called 'VLC for iOS'. When clicked an error message stating 'The item you've requested is not currently available in the Australian Store.' and yes, I'm in Australia.

However if you just click 'free' the app will download, give it a try. Odd but it works!

13.2GB and 16.5GB 1080p MKV on an iPhone 5 and an iPad 4: Plays fine, just a little stuttering after fast-foward.

And it does play DTS! I tried it with several files.

At last, I had the time to start testing the app. (Had to go to raise my fishing nets from our lake and, then, pre-prepare the fish I've caught.)

The first and most important thing I'm writing a quick remark before posting the full review:

!!!both AC3 and DTS are supported!!!

That is, if you need AC3 (and even more importantly, DTS, which, currently, isn't supported by any AppStore player) support, hurry up, download and archive the IPA file before support for these codecs will be removed!! (It WILL be in the near future!)

Glad to see VLC back in the AppStore.

The design of the app - looks similar to the core apps in iOS 7: "flat", sans depth. Coincidence?

…(and even more importantly, DTS, which, currently, isn't supported by any AppStore player)…

Thanks, Menneisyys! What do you mean wit DTS?

Digital Theater Systems (a sound system)
Decoding Time Stamp (video compression)
Distributed Transmission System
Data Transformation Services

(#1 – #3 are video related.) Thanks in advance for enlightenment.

It's the audio format for many DVD's and Blu-ray discs. The DTS folks have forced every AppStore player to remove DTS support. The same will surely happen to VLC.

Thank you. Very interesting. Folks, believe Menneisyys, he is an expert (I know him from touchArcade when some emulators slipped through Apples control department).

Playback looking good on iPad 4. MKV's 720p, haven't tried anything else.

Also experiencing the distorted sound trying to playback AVI and the data transfer via wifi is not all that stable. Hit and miss affair, sometimes they transfer, sometimes they fail to, the bigger the file the greater the likelihood that they fail.

Dropbox integration is sweeeeet. Works well, easy to link, nice UI all round...

EDIT: 1080p working well too...
