having site issues it looks like. Im trying to get the academic upgrade price, and it keeps telling me my key is invalid, WTF :)

Also, there are a lot of pageouts going on their page right now. Grrrr

I'm getting this as well. It does let me through if I select the regular upgrade price, but tells me I have no valid product to upgrade if I select the academic. Did you purchase an academic copy of version 2? I didn't, so if it's not a problem on their end I suspect you have to have gotten an educational copy of the previous version for the academic upgrade to work.

Answer yourself those two questions:

1. Do you have a Mac that is supported by VMWare for those features?
2. Have enabled the 3D acceleration for your virtual machine in the VM's configuration?

Besides, running games in a VM still is an insane idea. There is no hardware that is powerful enough for that on the desktop market.

I am able to run WoW on windows 7 through VMware fusion 3.0 at a stable 30 fps on my MBP. I know that WoW runs native on OS X, I just wanted to test it out. Granted the graphics were all set to the lowest but it was still pretty cool. I have also gotten portal running pretty smoothly. I'd say that they made some pretty big steps regarding gaming through a VM.

I just paid to upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0, and the two options they gave me were:
$39.99 = upgrade
$99.99 = upgrade + a subscription to free upgrades for 12-months

I guess their days of giving free major upgrades is over?

mine is showing

$39.99 = upgrade
$59.99 = upgrade + a subscription to free upgrades for 12-months

+ 25% off promo code for being a beta tester.

this whole subscription thing does kinda annoy me.

Does VM Fusion offer any real significant advantages to Parallels. I'm using MBA with XP on Parallels but would like to try VM Fusion but am I really gaining anything..?

Personal Preferences. You can't go wrong with either. Give the VMware trial a whirl and see if you like it.

I do have to note the Aero in VM is almost pointless on my macbook with 2.4/4GB and 9400M. With the aero off, it feels pretty solid though. Running Win7 Ultimate

I am in the same situation. Been on hold all day (on US and UK site) and in spite of leaving messages, no phone calls. I eventually got to a place where I could contact them by email and I now have a ticket, but still no solution nor VM Fusion 3.

Have you actually explicitly registered your existing serial number? In spite of having had an account and using it to download Fusion updates for years, I had to use the site to explicitly register my copy of Fusion 2 to get that message to stop appearing. As soon as I did and waited about 15 minutes, my copy showed up in the system.

2. Does any one see a marked improvement when booting into K64 (64bit kernel) again the wording on vmware seems to indicate better performance.

Do you mean versus running version 3 on the 32 bit kernel? Fusion 2 doesn't work at all with the 64 bit kernel, though I assume you knew that.

The subscription thing is really weird. Charging for point upgrades (most bug and security fixes, presumably) is very unlikely to happen, and unless VMware decides to adopt the Parallels model of incrementing the version number by 1 and milking all the existing customers for upgrade dough every three months, I doubt we're going to see Fusion 4 in the next 12 months.

VMWare Upgrade purchasing issues

I just called VMWare. Their website is broken, and will not allow most users to purchase an upgrade for the $39 price.

The rep said this is a known issue, and the service should be available on 10/28 at noon or so.

So much for getting the upgrade!

Thanks for the info. I have been trying to get the Fusion 3 upgrade since about 7am UK time.

Who do they think they are Microsoft?

Anyone know how to activate Windows 7 again once VM Fusion has been installed. I have a legit copy of Windows 7 activated on BootCamp, but once I loaded it through Fusion it now says I have to reactivate it. Well guess what? It won't activate, it says I have to call Microsoft. Which I hate doing. So is there way around this? I tried the Instructions on VM's site but it doesn't work, unless you have to actually install the VM Tools while in Bootcamp. If this is the case I don't know how to do that as there is no separate file for that.

Well with Parallels you can make clones and templates of your virtual machines. This feature wasn't available in Fusion 2 and I don't see any mention of it in the docs for Fusion 3.

The only advantage of Fusion for me is that it handles VMWare Workstation VMs natively. I've had a lot of problems with VMWare Workstation VMs converted into Parallels.

Plus.. Parallels website actually works ;)

Has anybody been able to get a trial key?? Something is seriously broken in the VMWare site. I downloaded and installed it over my paid 2.x copy and now it doesn't launch without a trial key which I am not able to get.

Same, can't get a trial key emailed out. Have tried three times (this was after the multiple attempts it took to log in). Giving up for today.

Hopefully they get things back running shortly.

To install VM Tools. Boot the virtual machine so you're at the desktop. Then select Virtual Machines > Install VMware Tools from the menu bar.

The upgrade process is broken. I confirmed with a call to tech support, but it's obvious. The saddest part is that the server that handles the licensing is the same one that sends out the emails with trial keys.

If you're really stuck, you can use the following beta key that expires in 5 days. That will last you until the free 30-day trial emails can go out:

I have installed VMware Tools... it runs through the installation prompts to reboot, then says I need to activate. When I connect to activate again online it says no dice...call to activate, the whole spiel.

Got it installed. Aero seems to work OK.

I noticed Windows Media Center launched. In previous versions, it wouldn't work. My ultimate test will be seeing if Media Center can record and send video to the XBOX (as an extender device) from within Fusion.

Yeah, I purchased Parallels when it came out and after a year they stopped supporting me completely even though I upgraded. Finally I could no longer run the older versions and was screwed. So now I say screw them. And when I needed it again, I purchased Fusion 2. But now I'm really afraid to buy Fusion 3 because it sounds like they are taking a note from Parallels.

Also Fusion 2 was heavily discounted in many places; I paid $25 for the full version of Fusion 2 when I needed it. I wonder if I wait a few weeks will 3 also be discounted so much.

VMware Fusion wipes the floor with Parallels. Parallels 3.0 was an absolute failure, and I have never had issues with Fusion.
