VNC Lite now in App Store

No, I'm way past that point. Have everything set up correctly and am actually at my office using wifi connection to vnc to my machine at home.

This is the error I am getting when I turn of wifi on the iphone to force an Edge connection:

"Cannot connect to "[server]". There is no active network. Check WIFI and phone settings."

Perhaps the VNC app requires wifi? Is anyone using it successfully over Edge?

I am using it successfully with EDGE, my wifi is turned off in the iPhone, and I have unplugged my WAP54G for good measure to prove it. Of course, I am connecting through EDGE to my RV082 VPN with the iPhone first...

Maybe your phone is not connected to EDGE? Bad signal?

Mocasoft Already has an RDP Client for Other Platforms

Mocasoft also has a Remote Desktop client for Pocket PC , so it would not necessarily have to be Microsoft who releases this. I for one look forward to a RDP iPhone client.

I doubt this very much. Microsoft isn't going to write an RDC client for the iPhone when no such thing exists for Windows Mobile (as far as I know).

Before you go and speculate about someone of violating the GPL (or anything else) I would suggest that you visit the Mocasoft hompage where you will see that they have VNC clients (as well as an RDP and terminal programs) for multiple operating systems, and they are far from new in this area.

Actually I'm pretty sure I can guess the truth to this... I think the author does not understand the code because he did not write it. The 1600x1200 limitation happens to be the same issue that plagues VNSea (the open source VNC implementation for jailbrake iPhones). Merely speculation at this point but I think he just took the VNSea code and modified the interface a bit to work with Apple's official APIs/SDK, which would be a violation of GPL unless he posts the source code on his website... There are obviously ways around the limitation he describes, I can think of several possible ways to buffer the screen data to fix it. That would of course require a deeper understanding of the code and the ability to re-write larger portions of it.

Since its resolution limited to 1680x1200, its effectively useless for anyone with a screen bigger than Apple's standard 20" models. Shame.

You can control your computer from another computer from across the internet.

You just have to forward the ports on your router to the internal IP. Tons of port forwarding tutorials out there.

I really don't see what's so hard about this...I'm a writer, not a programmer and it's pretty straight forward to me.

I actually visited their website prior to downloading the app as soon as it became available. Yes they have background with VNC, but no obvious experience/codebase with OSX or Cocoa/Objective C. That combined with the fact this this implementation has the same resolution limit that VNSea has is suspicious.

It is possible they ported their own RFB (Remote Frame Buffer) protocol code and happened to create the same problem by chance I suppose... but then why would they suggest it is impossible to get around, and an iPhone firmware issue? It is a problem with their programming.

Google Touchpad Pro and you can see a separate iPhone VNC (hopefully soon to be in the app store, but jailbreak only at the moment) which has conquered this so-called OS bug. They are admittedly a derivation of the same VNSea project, but this person took the time to correct the resolution limits. And he has SVN with all the code available for check-out to comply with the GPL.

To be fair, virtually every version of VNC is derived from the original GPL'd code in some way. I just wonder if this one is a bit more so.

Yeah, I'm a little skeptical of the usefulness, but in a pinch it will do.

I have a lot of elderly clients who need simple fixes. This enables me to do it right away as opposed to waiting until I'm back at my computer.

If you are this last type, stop asking idiot questions. Search for port forwarding. Figure it out.

I'm pretty impressed. While the "refresh" doesn't seem to be quite right, it went into overdrive when I played a video on my Mac (on a web page) and it actually did an impressive job of keeping up with the audio (albeit a somewhat slideshowy version of the video). In general, there seems to be some "smart" refreshing going on, but its not very thorough in its implementation. When it works though, its pretty darn impressive! the last few sentences of this post are being type via Mocha VNC. Overall a magnificent effort. I will definitely be considering the full version if they can work out the refresh issues. I plan to use this over 3G/WiFi on a semi-regular basis at home or on the road.

Here's How for Mac

First, in the Sharing System Preference, check off "Screen Sharing" and then identify, in the lower right, who should be able to access your Mac from the iPhone. Also, set the password here. Next, obtain your Mac's Internal IP address in the Network System Preference (something like 10.0.1.3). Use your Mac's router software (or Airport Utility if that is your router) to find the "port mapping" area (under "Advanced"). Create 2 ports (5900 and 5100) to point to the Mac's IP address. This permits incoming communication for either of these 2 ports to continue onward through the router to the Mac. When you configure the Airport Utility, you must type 5900 twice and make sure the IP address is correct. Do the same for 5100. Make a note of your Airport/Router/External IP address (not the same as the Mac's IP address!) Finally, enter your Airport/Router/External IP address, port 5900 and the password into the iPhone VNC software configuration and connect from anywhere that you have a WiFi or Edge connection. That should do it!
