I would listen to the person who works for AT&T. Think about it, it makes for sense financially for them to make you switch to one of the new data plans if you want tethering.

We're not disagreeing with that. MacKai works for AT&T. ;)

If you have an unlimited plan and you wanted to add tethering you will be given the option to change your data plan to the 2GB plan. I am not to sure how it is if you try it at ATT.com. If you change your plan with a service rep or at an ATT store, it is there job to advise you of losing the umlimited plan and adding the DataPro plan so you can add tethering. Tethering can only be added to the DataPro plan. ATT knows that the DataPlus plan is not enough data for tethering. You will eat that up in no time.

This is so pointless. The unlimited is more than the 2GB obviously and we can't add tethering for an additional $20 without altering our plan. Wow pointless. This sucks. I was really looking forward to tethering..... I'm not quite sure what to do.
Is anyone here going to get the 2GB plan and add tethering for the $20 additional fee?
I wish I could add a poll to this thread, to see the majority's opinion.

Tethering is a feature and can be added and removed via the AT&T My Wireless app on your iPhone as needed. If you have the 2GB data plan already, the only thing that should be prorated is the $20 tethering feature if you delete the feature when you're done.

I tether (very) infrequently with all the free hotspots available these days and plan on adding it on an as-needed basis directly from my phone. It'll cost $.67/day and you're still bound by your 2GB limits, so no data usage should be prorated.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my plan and I don't see why it wouldn't work like any other features which can be added/removed at will.

Notice how ethan028 stopped talking after he was proven wrong by EVERYONE
lol

$45 for 2 gb data is a joke. I pay $30 for unlimited data with my verizon plm pre plus. much better network. ***** phone but at least it doesnt drop calls. can't wait for my iphone 4 though, just a little nuisance carrying 2 phones around :/

I have unlimited. Can I still add tethering?

I don't know a lot about Verizon's data plans. Does the $30 include the tethering service/option as well? Or is it additional?

Click Here for complete details. I quoted 2 of the rates in my previous post. According to their site, there are no unlimited data plans and the mobile broadband service is not available everywhere.

Enjoy your unlimited plans while you can. Verizon have plans to also remove their unlimited plans. I can guarantee you if the iPhone ever makes it's way to the Verizon network, there will be no unlimited plans for it. iPhone users use much more bandwidth than any other smartphone. That's why current non-iPhone carriers have unlimited plans... less bandwidth hogs to worry about.

There really is no confusion about tethering if you read the press release, so I'm not sure why people are debating it.

I am staying with the unlimited plan on my line, downgrading the kids to the $15 plan and using the iPad's unlimited plan for the foreseeable future.

1. Who really cares about grammar? This is a rumors forum.

2. That's not entirely what i was trying to exclaim, what i'm saying is you can have tethering and keep your unlimited data plan.

This kid is amusing! He really thinks you can get tethering AND unlimited data without jailbreaking? What a joke! Unless you want to sound like a 10 year old, I would suggest being concerned on your grammar too. Go ahead and try to use tethering with unlimited data, it's not happening kid.

As pointed out, the only way to use tethering with an unlimited data plan is to jailbreak and use MyWi or something else. You can't do it any other way on AT&T.

So I guess I don't get this. Apple/AT&T have made it so that I can't connect my iPad to my tethering iPhone but I could connect a MacBook or some other laptop, right?

So I could pay AT&T $25 + $20 = $45 a month for my iPhone data + tethering.

But they would rather I pay $15, $25, or $30 a month and then only buy $15 or $30 of data for a WiFi + 3G iPad on the months that I actually sign up, contract free. Seems like they would do better to support tethering on the iPad and get the $45 per month guaranteed. Sure some would save $130 on their iPad, but others who don't have an iPhone or use the iPad that much would still get the 3G version to avoid the contract and the hassle of tethering, iPhone power drain from tethering, etc.

Sorry but I bought a WiFi only iPad, more storage, save $130, no month wait for 3G, and I'll use my iPhone when no WiFi is available over even worrying about it. It just doesn't make much biz sense from Apple or AT&T, nor does it reward consumer loyalty.

it's not really tethering. Its a 3g hotspot, similar to the mifi. But only available free on the pre plus and pixi

so yes, the $30 includes unlimited data for the pre plus AND unlimited data for the 3g hotspot which you can connect up to 5 devices to. (laptop, desktop, ipod touch etc)

why are people here arguing? almost everyone on this site has said the iphone4 is a piece of ish that never has a signal anyways. tethering is a nonissue if you dont have a signal ;)

My 3GS with version 4.0 has an option to enable tethering. When you select it it says to call ATT to get the service started.
