Jailbreaking 101
Hi, I've never had a Mac device but am considering replacing my recently lost cell phone with an iPhone 3G (refurbished model available at AT&T web site for $50 with 2-year contract extension). I guess the price is low thanks to the recent arrival of the 4G.
I've never had a smart phone before, since my laptop is almost always with me every second of every day. The main reason I'm considering a smart phone is the possibility of tethering it to my laptop when I'm traveling and there's no available WiFi signal. But it's not worth it to me if I have to pay the $20 tethering fee (in addition to the data plan of $25/month for 2 GB of data or $15/month for 200 MB of data).
Earlier comments in this thread have given me hope, such as:
"Screw tethering. Give me a mobile hotspot instead. That's where it's at!"
Yes, no more legal unlimited/tethering. Good thing there are other ways!
"Jailbreak + miwi + unlimited = totally freakin awesome." (miwi means MyWiFi from Intel, I presume?)
Can someone explain the specifics of what jailbreaking is, how to do it, and what the "other ways" of tethering are that MacKai (the AT&T employee) referred to above in his post?
Also, can anyone point me to some good web pages where I can learn more about these workarounds? I'm willing to do some research if necessary, but I don't know where to start. For example, if I were with Verizon or Sprint, I would definitely use myTether.net.
(The $20 fee applies even if it's a wired tether, right? I actually don't have much of a preference between a wired tether (via USB, I guess) vs. a wireless tether, so does that give me more options? Providing a free hotspot to other devices is nice but is something that I would very rarely use.)
