I've noticed that stocks dip anyway after an announcement, but perhaps I'm remembering it wrong.
They did it so that people don't hope for an iPhone 5 and Apple stocks don't decrease when they're supposed to increase.

I think people need to get over the fact that there won't be an iPhone 5. The 5 with the (i think now official) iOS background, hints at iOS 5 and Apple specifically said that they will be focusing on it this year at WWDC. They did it so that people don't hope for an iPhone 5 and Apple stocks don't decrease when they're supposed to increase.

I've been wondering, what if there isn't even a mention of the next iPhone Monday? That will leave everyone hanging for the next several months.

Then again, they will have to mention something because they wouldn't let iOS5 hit the streets on the old iPhone 4, would they?

iPhone OS History:

March 6th, 2008 - Apple demos and releases a beta of iOS 2.0 and a new SDK to developers (no mention of a new phone)
June 9th, 2008 - Apple announces the new iPhone
July 11th, 2008 - Apple releases iOS 2.0 GM to the first iPhone along side the iPhone 3G.

March 17th, 2009 - Apple demos and releases a beta of iOS 3.0 with a new SDK to developers (no mention of a new phone)
June 8th, 2009 - Apple announces the new iPhone
June 17th, 2009 - Apple releases iOS 3.0 GM to the first iPhone and iPhone 3G
June 19th, 2009 - Apple releases the iPhone 3GS running iOS 3.0

April 8th, 2010 - Apple demos and releases a beta of iOS 4.0 and a new SDK to developers (no mention of a new phone)
June 7th, 2001 - Apple announces the new iPhone
June 21st, 2010 - Apple releases iOS 4.0 GM to the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS
June 24th, 2010 - Apple releases the iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0

Other than moving the original time frame for their preview event from early spring to late spring, everything has been pretty predictable and Apple doesn't have to mention the new iPhone on Monday (they haven't in the past) and yes they have released new OS on older hardware before (though only by a few days).

I predict that this year will be the same. iOS 5.0 beta and a new SDK at WWDC with another event to show off the final version of iOS 5 and announce the new iPhone at the end of August/ early September.

I'm a believer in not expecting specific things and then you can view the outcome objectively with the bonus of not having any disappointment from creating speculative expectations. As the picture shows, we are likely to see something to do with OS X Lion, an iPhone based announcement, and an iCloud announcement.

But if we look at the empirical evidence presented, it's more likely to be an iOS update. In regards to OS X Lion, we have nothing solid to go on. The iCloud announcement is the only one of the three which we can make predictions about with a degree of certainty judging by the visual evidence provided in recent front page articles.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

I would know for sure if we were getting an iPhone next week - but the pizza place closed

Ok so why is a realease-date-reveal at WWDC so impossible again? What is the counter-clues for this theory so to speak?

No leaks form China yet. There almost always are. Also, there is very little in the rumor mill about it which means it's most likely not in manufacturing yet.
More likely it's the probability that there's no real hardware difference in the next iPhone other than a chip and camera. What is there to leak that most people haven't already figured out?

I was just thinking that too. I read somewhere that the antenna will look the same. (maybe it will be changed only physics-aly and not visually.)

I also read that all of a sudden international dignitaries are being invited to WWDC at the last minute which is out of character...

Hmmmmmm...

It's quite obvious now why then announced what they were announcing, I mean, those three icons present themselves as soon as you walk in, so it made sense. Doesn't mean that there won't be other things announced though, they're just the three things everybody is going to know about the minute the doors open because there's a mahoosive poster advertising it.

The human brain is really something cool right? If one person is sure of something, the brain will try to come up with as many points to agree with the perspective. Unfortunately that can be used for the wrong way as well.

I think rumors from credible sources have been around which solidify that there won't be an iPhone in this year's WWDC. Why is Apple inviting international dignitaries? Because they're afraid that everyone decided not to show up to WWDC after knowing that the iPhone won't be released.
Apple wants these dignitaries to show up, because they believe iCloud will be the successor to MobileMe how iPhone is a successor to Newton.
Nothing more.

But i don't think i can ever convince people like you who think alike, otherwise.

So why is it that they would push all this back 3 months later than normal? From what I understand, iphone 4S/5 will only be an incremental update with the A5 processor and maybe more RAM? I don't see why they would need an additional 3 months to put this out.

I only ask because I am one of those who bought the 3GS in June 09, and I was looking forward to updating my phone this month, perhaps even switching to verizon. Unfortunately if I want unlimited data on verizon, I'm probably going to have to go with the iphone 4/android since they're supposedly getting rid of unlimited data...

Then you misunderstand.

Apple is now supporting iOS 4.x on the iPhone (GSM & CDMA), iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV (also Time Capsule/Airport Extreme is rumored to be getting iOS as well).

Last year the iPad had to wait 5 months for it to finally get iOS 4.x and now the Verizon iPhone is running behind on iOS 4.2.8 wile everyone else is on iOS 4.3.3, so maybe those extra 3 months are needed to make sure that they can release iOS 5.0 to those and newer device all at once.

Apple has already said that this event will only be a Preview of iOS 5, they are not releasing iOS 5 next week. So why release a new phone on old software?

SO let me get this straight. The Developers who work with software which has been pointed out ad nauseum, and who are the main attendees of this event are not going to show up because this WWDC is rumored to be all software, not hardware. Then, to combat this problem, Apple invites more non-developers to attend so that they can see the unveiling of all this new software which in all likelihood they will care about far less than a new iPhone or something and are MUCH more likely than developers to label the event as disappointing if it does in fact lack any hardware.

It sounds like you think WWDC is attended by apple fans/techies who want to know the latest apple products rather than people who develop software for these products.

I hope I'm not coming up with too many points to agree with your perspective here.

some of y'all are reaching and expecting wayyy too much.

I have a feeling iOS5 will be amazing, yet not available for some time.

So to summerize:

1. Industry sources predict there will be no iPhone at WWDC because the rumor mill is slow compared to before.

2. The last launch was sloppy. It was plagued with leaked info weeks before and with antennagate after, followed by the MIA white model. Arguably the most damaging, reverse progress public relations situation they have had in their modern era. It went against the precedent they set before of being super secretive.

Doesn't this seem like it's a one of a kind scenario??? I assumed the counter arguments were something more significant than: the rumor mill is dry.

I would EXPECT it to be dry!

So we should get just a SDK of iOS 5 next week and 3 months until the final version? Sounds very logical really, what a shame I was expecting to be using a new iOS for next week.

It's these same people who will bitch the loudest post-keynote because Apple didn't deliver what they wanted, but what everyone else told them not to expect.

With many, Apple can't win.

And these people, although unhappy and bitchy, will gladly fork over their money for everything Jobs announces.

Then they'll bitch some more.

And Steve is in the position he is because he consistently cares about Consistently giving us what we want. (even before we know we want it lol)

You could say that about any manufacturer of any product that you own. Apple is no different, they're in the business to make money.
