The three TV’s in our house are all connected to ATV’s (1st, 2nd and 3rd gen 4K’s). I don’t foresee us updating any of them unless a) Apple stops software support for any of the models—which is doubtful or b) one of the models dies on us.

We use them all everyday and they’ve been a fantastic addition to the house since we ditched cable.

Can't think of anything on the video side that needs improvement but, on the audio side, I'd like to see native support for Hi-Res Lossless 24-bit/192kHz audio.
Agreed it needs lossless audio. For me the other 2 big features it needs, and then I would replace my Nvidia Shield with an Apple TV are:

h265 codec support and Dolby TrueHD and DTS X pass through. As it stands Plex is severely limited on the Apple TV compared to the Nvidia Shield.

In it’s current iteration, tvOS doesn’t need upgraded hardware. It’s more than capable of handling the tasks it’s expected to perform. I do understand that people want to buy the latest and greatest but Apple doesn’t really care. Just look at the Apple Watch Ultra 2: it’s going on its second year and no price drop, but hey!, it comes in black now.

Unless it has an M Chip, don’t bother. The next logical step would be support for AAA games. I don’t need a device that can load Netflix faster, I need one that can run more complex games.
I expect it to support console gaming, but I have a feeling most who purchase it won’t use it for that. For streaming which is probably what most use their current ones for, the A15 is already overkill and faster than competitors from Amazon, Google and Roku. If you’re a gamer, you already have a superior setup (by a huge margin) with your PC/PS5/PS5 Pro/Xbox Series X. Gaming with Apple is like putting your feet into poor fitting shoes.

They probably don’t know what to do with it that won’t potentially risk eating into other (possibly future) device’s profits.

TVs are pretty much all still 4K (with various versions of HDR) so there isn’t much to do there.

The Apple TV has never really had any groundbreaking apps from Apple, only ones that cause naming confusion.

Back when I purchased my original Apple TV HD, my favourite part was the Ariel screensavers.

I think there's a real chance the next Apple TV box will arrive in March 2025 with the A18 SoC. Why A18? Because it means faster video decoding and the very strong possibility it will integrate Apple Intelligence features for doing searches for the type of video you want to watch.

Here's my idea for an upgrade:

Apple TV
A18 chip
128GB

-New camera that clips onto your TV for FaceTime, Apple Fitness, Animoji Karaoke, AR apps etc.
-Hello, Apple Intelligence
-Siri Remote with USB-C

$149.99

Apple TV Pro
M4 chip
1TB

-All the features of Apple TV
-AAA games
-Camera supports gaming

$499.99

Software:

FaceTime Family*

TVPlay*

New services explained:

FaceTime Family

As the name suggests. Invite the whole family (and the dog!) onto the call with center stage and the distance capturing more view in landscape mode.

Gaming Channel

Similar to the Apple TV App. Along with all Apple Arcade content under one app, Supports 3rd party gaming services such as Microsoft GamePass and Amazon Luna etc. solves privacy concerns and allows more streaming services onto Apple TV. Apple could introduce a gaming controller with button input names that change according to the provider.

TVPlay

A whole new experience driven by the new camera array. Could be several apps or under one app.

AR Games. Games that track your movements along with controllers. Accurate dance games and exercise games that motivate you to get fit while you play. Multiplayer support across Apple TV gamers on one screen.*

AR shopping. Try different clothing, jewelry, sunglasses and even hair styles.

AR Apps. Apps we haven’t even dreamed of. Animoji Karaoke with online and sharing. Animoji conversations and stories.

Health. Exercise apps and games. Stretch instruction that detects if you’re possibly doing a stretch wrong. Body and health tracking.

SharePlay. Compatible with FaceTime, Gaming Channel and other apps. Share live reactions with family or online streaming platforms like Twitch. Show off your gaming sessions or give a quick webinar. Apple could launch a new live streaming service for Apple TV users.

*This can be very innovative. Imagine playing this game online with grandma in another town. Here’s a game that woul work well with the camera:

There's still a ton of potential with Apple TV.

I'd just be happy if they just stopped removing apps from older versions forcing obsolescence .... I still use the pre tv os 3rd gen MD/199LL/A which has the optical output, and functions perfectly well as an airplay device.

The only apps I now use on it still are prime video (which handily plays ad supported amazon videos with no ads!), and the red bull tv app, primarily because netflix, hulu, youtube, and loads of others have simply just disappeared one by one.

It was also incredibly silly of apple to give their streaming service the same name as a device.

Looking forward to what the next Apple TV brings. I think it is a great device. But still use the Apple TV HD from 2015. It still works fine and I don't have a 4K TV.

I don't believe in a game device for the Apple TV. They had their chance since the Apple TV HD. Playing Asphalt 8 was fun with the remote. But a lot of obvious games that could have been ported from iOS didn't release on the Apple TV and since then it lost my interest in it as a gaming device. I also heard rumours that the next Apple TV will be a cheaper streaming device?

I would like to see the next Apple TV offer the A18 SoC, plus some of the features BeatsBeats mentioned, 128 GB local storage and have a USB4 port to connect to external storage to expand local storage by up to 1 TB.

Apple still uses A15 Bionic in these products:

Apple TV 4K 2022
iPhone 14 (soon to be replaced by updated iPhone SE?)
iPhone SE 2022 (same as above)
iPad mini 6 2021 (imminent replacement?)

If they’re using the lowest binned A15 chips in ATV4K but no longer producing them for the higher end products it makes sense to use something newer they will be producing for a few years.

Another consideration might be maximising lifetime support for newer video codecs like AV1 for Netflix, but they’d need to use A18 for that. Or M3 but that’s lower volume and even less cost effective.

Yeah when Gurman said a new one was coming earlier this year I asked what the purpose would be back then of updating to an A16. The Apple TV isn't something the Apple updates regularly just to have the latest chip... there's generally a good technical reason for the update (4K support in 2017, update to some standards in 2021, then making some bigger changes in 2022 to lower costs). I can see the 2022 Apple TV continuing on for at least another year at which point using the A18 and updating some standards (ex. Wifi 7, BT 5.3) could be on the table.

My 2015 Apple TV HD is still getting updates. Unfortunately other devices I purchased after that are not. o_O
Haha. Yeah I still have a 2015 Apple TV 4 (purchased before they renamed it the HD) and it's still working fine for occasionally streaming Netflix hooked up to an older 1080p TV in a bedroom and is running the latest software no less. I'm sure Apple will cut it off eventually...

Vision Pro is the best ATV they have, like you can actually watch things on it, but sucks to share the experience

In my “trickle down” model, when Apple release a new and hopefully faster Apple TV, my existing Apple 4K TV will be re-deployed to the master bedroom - allowing me to remove the Roku Ultra that’s currently there. If not, everything just stays as it is.

My only upgrade wish is that it is more reliable so I don’t have to reboot it almost every day and reinstall apps on a regular basis.

I feel seen. As someone with a first-generation Apple TV 4K and two HDs, I know the current model would be a large improvement. But I also don't want to buy three of those only for a new model to come out in less than a year.
Just upgrade the two HD's and keep the first generation 4k until the next new release. You don't have to do them all at the same time. I have the latest in my living room, and the first gen 4K in my bedroom. The only reason I even bought the new one this time though was because I wanted one in the bedroom. The first gen 4K already does everything I need it to do.

Not necessarily all console games, but at least add support for the titles already on the App Store. Assassins Creed and Resident Evil Village would be great on a bigger screen.
