I have the last two iterations of the Apple TV 4K, and I don't see any need for a faster processor. 64 GB is plenty of storage for apps. If Apple added the ability to download TV programming, I'd want more, but no one is talking about that right. Almost never use FaceTime, so think I'll hold off unless Apple adds something not mentioned in this article.

My 2015 Apple TV HD is still getting updates. Unfortunately other devices I purchased after that are not. o_O
This article made me realise that my HD Apple TV, bought in 2015, is my oldest working Apple device. It is still fast enough to run all my streaming software on the latest version of TVOS and act as a home hub. I don’t foresee a need to update until my HD TV breaks and I upgrade to 4K. I reckon Apple TV is the best value product that they make 🎉

I expect it to support console gaming, but I have a feeling most who purchase it won’t use it for that. For streaming which is probably what most use their current ones for, the A15 is already overkill and faster than competitors from Amazon, Google and Roku. If you’re a gamer, you already have a superior setup (by a huge margin) with your PC/PS5/PS5 Pro/Xbox Series X. Gaming with Apple is like putting your feet into poor fitting shoes.

Not necessarily all console games, but at least add support for the titles already on the App Store. Assassins Creed and Resident Evil Village would be great on a bigger screen.

This is why I mentioned 2 versions should be available.

Apple TV A18 128GB $149.99
and
Apple TV Pro M4 1TB $399.99 for gamers.

I can’t imagine what they could do with Apple TV on the hardware side

It’s fine

My complaints are all software

Hoping for an Apple TV with active cooling, more RAM, and larger storage option.

Google's new box is a winner...hopefully Apple will keep up. The unthinkable dream is for Apple to allow the AppleTV box to STORE OUR OWN CONTENT (say, maybe 1TB) so we can take it on the road and use it when we don't have internet connectivity.

Don’t know what 4k version I have.. won’t change until they make a migration tool from one to another… to hard to authorize each app..

What I want and would buy one for:

4K 120Hz support using HDMI 2.1 (which the ports on the existing Apple TV 4K are HDMI 2.1 but for some reason they limit it to 60Hz despite the wide availability of 120Hz displays, and how perfect that would make it as a game streaming device).

What we'll probably get:

More AI features to try and 'suggest' content to us and a minor speed bump that will be totally irrelevant to 90% of what an Apple TV is used for.

What it really needs is:

HDMI 2.1 to allow 4k120.
USB C for a FaceTime camers
A18 for AI stuff

4k120 is important as it allow you to run 4k60, 4k30 and 4k24 without constantly having the screen blank on you when the frame rate changes, as 60, 30 and 24 all divide exactly into 120.

I don’t think we will see it until after all the M4 Macs release, as Apple will want to reserve TSMC 3nm production for more profitable products. That said maybe they could use an M2 instead of an A18 to get it out sooner.

Get rid of the blackout when switching refresh rates, newest tv’s can now do this.
Undo the artificially restricted 4k-120 in the hdmi 2.1 port

Wishlist: add a 2230 ssd connector so I can add my own storage 🫶

I’‘d love to see the support for USB-C storage, same as iPad.
Got some large Home made videos I’d like to take with me to the cabin with me without needing to AirPlay.
2nd HDMI output dedicated to Audio will be welcome.

I've got a 2015 Apple TV HD too and for the most part it works fine, but there are some apps (Dazn, I'm especially looking at you) that are just SOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOW that I would really like to replace it with a new model soon

The only way building in a camera works is if you position your AppleTV immediately center and just above or below your TV set. Anywhere else- which is where many put their AppleTVs- and the camera benefit starts suffering. For example, I store my AppleTV on a shelf maybe 8 feet to the right of the TV. If it had a FaceTime camera and I'm looking at who I'm talking to on the screen, they would be seeing me look far right of them.

And then there's the many who make their AppleTVs disappear BEHIND their TV or in a cabinet... for which a built-in camera could "see" nothing.

The best option along these lines would be to put a "normalized" USB port back on the box and let it have the capability to attach a USB camera that could be mounted on the TV. Then, people could have the box anywhere and place the camera in the ideal spot too.

Else, open up continuity camera so it can be a more permanent wireless solution instead of leaning on iDevices that tend to leave their household with their owners. Think of something like the ancient iSight camera perhaps powered by a USB jack on the TV or a USB block plugged in behind the TV somewhere.

I like the target of this idea myself... but there are much better implementations than building a camera into the box. That option would only work for a few who happen to place their AppleTV box visibly and ideally right above or right below the center of their TVs.

Considering how small the Apple TV is, if it had a camera, would it really be such a big deal to place it by the TV?

My 2021 model is still going strong. Only upgrades I'd want is for the screen to stop going black when framerate/resolution is changed, and 120hz/ProMotion for the entire tvOS would be essential

Apple TV tells your TV that the format changed, TV takes time to apply the settings. There's some new tech I heard on ATP in newer TVs which makes it better, but not solving issue completely, can't remember now. My point, no matter how fast your Apple TV is, you will still wait for the TV to load and switch its mode.

PS You also can disable this setting and never see a black screen, your TV will play with the same frame-rate, independently form the content.

PS2: It looks like it might be HDMI feature, so Apple TV update will be necessary.

My only upgrade wish is that it is more reliable so I don’t have to reboot it almost every day and reinstall apps on a regular basis.

I rarely need to do it, and even when I do, it is usually HomePod ARC issue and reboot doesn't solves the issue.

Many want to put a replacement wherever they have the current one now. For some, that’s towards either ideal spot for this purpose. For others, this would be a big change to where they want it. Rephrasing your response…

Considering how EASY and cheap it would be to insert a “normal” USB port in AppleTV for anyone who optionally wants a variety of hardware add-ons like a camera or more storage, would it really be a big deal for Apple to provide one?
